Ten Years Supporting, Delivering & Promoting the Whole Spectrum of Animation
TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat. -

Animac 2014 – Full Programme
Animac 2014 – Full programme International Film Festival of Animation of Catalonia From 20th to 23rd February 2014, Lleida Animac 2014 explores hybrid animation with Chris Shepherd, Jiří Barta and the makers of Gumball ANIMAC 2014 Animac, the International Film Festival of Animation in Catalonia, celebrates its 18th birthday by devoting it to hybrid animation – under the lemma HYBRID – and its capacity to mix and integrate all kinds of audiovisual formats. The Festival will be held in Lleida (Spain) from 20th to 23rd February 2014. Organized by Lleida City Council and directed by curator Carolina López, Animac 2014 reaffirms its commitment to all audiences: four days full of animation screenings – with more than 235 selected pieces –, exclusive lectures, and special sessions targeted at professionals, students, connoisseurs, families and children. Directly related to the HYBRID theme, Animac will welcome the following international guests: British animator Chris Shepherd, Czech stop-motion master Jiří Barta, the makers of “The Amazing World of Gumball”, Ben Bocquelet and Mic Graves, musician/animator tandem Péter Vacz and Joseph Wallace, Polish animator Piotr Szczepanowicz or abstract Japanese animator Maya Yonesho, among others. Spanish animation will be represented by Marc and Xavi Terris, the animators of the Annie-nominated indie-game Tiny Thief, FX specialist Àlex Villagrasa, the maker of Pocoyó Guillermo García Carsi and BCN-based Headless Studio. HYBRID, THE SPIRIT OF OUR TIMES Animation has benefited all possible media, mixing and merging with many languages, techniques and formats: we defend our HYBRID theme as a symptom of the spirit of our times. Thus, Animac’s full programme and all its sections are infused with hybrid animation. -
Film Research Report Structure
Developing the Screen Industries in North Staffordshire A Research and Strategy Paper for the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership Peter Rudge Staffordshire University 1 Executive Summary The objective of this research was to deliver a report that informs future strategic development in the North Staffordshire Region by increasing the knowledge base of the opportunities, gaps in provision and need within the Screen Industries. The geographical focus for the work is the local authority areas as identified by the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership for North Staffordshire. Within the report we propose to: • Map film activities and film support services taking place across the region. This may include University spin out companies or support programmes funded through the Public sector. Highlight additional film support services that are required. • Identify key players, organisations, companies and agencies active in the development of film in the region. This would include Advantage West Midlands, Screen West Midlands, locally based Universities and Colleges. • To identify the key products from the region such as Souled Out and The Card which increase ‘brand awareness’ of the regions potential as a film production choice. • To identify potential screen venues in both conventional and unconventional settings which may be used for performances. These might for example, include retail units in Hanley or Newcastle City Centres or an empty industrial unit. • To identify potential venues, locations and areas of interest to film makers within the region such as the diverse offerings from the wildness of the Staffordshire Moorlands to old heritage buildings in Burslem such as the Wedgwood Institute. • Outline regional, national and international opportunities for funding and investment in the region’s film infrastructure. -
