GARY STEPS DOWN AS VARSITY BLUES FOOTBALL HEAD COACH The University of Toronto Varsity Blues announce today that Greg Gary, head coach and manager of football operations, is stepping down from his role and leaving the program, effective immediately. “What Coach Gary has accomplished with this program can be measured on the field, in the classroom and in his commitment to the holistic development of the student athlete,” said Beth Ali, Executive Director of Athletics and Physical Activity. “His athlete-centered approach and commitment to developing strong, civic-minded young men is evident in the success our student-athletes have achieved post-graduation.” Upon returning to the Blues as the full-time head coach in 2011, Gary took on the responsibility of rebuilding a program that had seen some challenges for a number of years. His focus was on the growth and development of young players and re-establishing a winning tradition to this storied football team. With stints in the National Football League as well as the Canadian Football League (CFL), winning a Grey Cup with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1986, Gary brought with him 20 years of coaching experience as well as his knowledge of elite-level football, back to the University. Under his guidance, 10 of his athletes have earned OUA all-star honours, while four have gone on to be named all-Canadians. He has had 10 players drafted by CFL teams, most notably Llevi Noel of the Toronto Argonauts, Aaron Milton of the 2015 Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders, Alex Pierzchalski of the Montreal Alouettes, and most recently, Danny Sprukulis, also with the Roughriders. “I have enjoyed my time with this team and coaching all of the players that have suited up for me,” said Gary. “It has been a privilege to work with the young men that I have, as well as the many coaches that have given themselves for the betterment of this football team. I look forward to contributing to the university in a different role that will provide unique challenges and enhance the university experience for all our students.” Gary will remain at the University of Toronto in a position within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education. A search for a new head coach begins immediately. .

The Gryphons’ Lair Issue 34 - November 2019 What Happened in October? Game 7 vs. Queen’s The Guelph Gryphons travelled to Kingston, Ontario to take on the Queen’s Gaels in a Thursday night, pre-Thanksgiving match-up. The entire game was very back and forth throughout, with the Gryphons tying up the game late in the fourth quarter, bringing us to overtime. With a defensive stop on Queen’s overtime drive, Guelph was able to respond and get the ball to the 26-yard line, setting up Kicker, Eric Stranz, to kick the winning field goal. Our Offensive Player of the Game was Running Back, Juwan Jeffrey. Our Defensive Player of the Game was Defensive End/Linebacker, AJ Allen. Lastly, our Special Teams Player of the Game was second-year Kicker, Eric Stranz, who has been 13-of-15 on field goals at this point in the season. Thanksgiving Weekend After a Thursday night win in Kingston, the team had the Thanksgiving weekend off to spend time with family and friends. As many members of our team come from British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, the trek home was just not doable. That’s when Gryphon Football’s POP Group leader, Bruna Ferraro, stepped in to host the boys at a Thanksgiving dinner and made them feel at home during the long weekend. Thank you, Bruna and the Ferraro's for hosting our boys. Guelph's players wanted to right the ship after a narrow defeat last week in Hamilton – and getting a first ever for their new Head Coach was high on the list of priorities.
