GARY STEPS DOWN AS VARSITY BLUES FOOTBALL HEAD COACH The University of Toronto Varsity Blues announce today that Greg Gary, head coach and manager of football operations, is stepping down from his role and leaving the program, effective immediately. “What Coach Gary has accomplished with this program can be measured on the field, in the classroom and in his commitment to the holistic development of the student athlete,” said Beth Ali, Executive Director of Athletics and Physical Activity. “His athlete-centered approach and commitment to developing strong, civic-minded young men is evident in the success our student-athletes have achieved post-graduation.” Upon returning to the Blues as the full-time head coach in 2011, Gary took on the responsibility of rebuilding a program that had seen some challenges for a number of years. His focus was on the growth and development of young players and re-establishing a winning tradition to this storied football team. With stints in the National Football League as well as the Canadian Football League (CFL), winning a Grey Cup with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1986, Gary brought with him 20 years of coaching experience as well as his knowledge of elite-level football, back to the University. Under his guidance, 10 of his athletes have earned OUA all-star honours, while four have gone on to be named all-Canadians. He has had 10 players drafted by CFL teams, most notably Llevi Noel of the Toronto Argonauts, Aaron Milton of the 2015 Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders, Alex Pierzchalski of the Montreal Alouettes, and most recently, Danny Sprukulis, also with the Roughriders. “I have enjoyed my time with this team and coaching all of the players that have suited up for me,” said Gary. “It has been a privilege to work with the young men that I have, as well as the many coaches that have given themselves for the betterment of this football team. I look forward to contributing to the university in a different role that will provide unique challenges and enhance the university experience for all our students.” Gary will remain at the University of Toronto in a position within the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education. A search for a new head coach begins immediately. .
