D. Cornell University 2018 Railway Crossings: Encounters in Ottoman Lands focuses on the production of railway spaces in western Anatolia during the second half of the 19th century, with an emphasis on how spatial practices were altered with the advent of railways in the region. Understanding the railroads as a cultural as well as a material phenomenon, this work approaches the western Anatolian railways through a series of interdisciplinary vignettes that juxtapose the histories of the built environment with histories of technology, archaeology, travel, and the senses. In an effort to modernize its transportation infrastructure, the Ottoman government granted the first railway concessions in Anatolia to two British companies. The Izmir-Aydın and Izmir-Kasaba lines connected the port city of Izmir to the fertile river valleys of the Gediz, Küçük and Büyük Menderes rivers. The construction of railways was an intensely material act, requiring not only the laying of tracks and the construction of station buildings, but the alteration of a whole landscape. Beyond this physicality, the railroads were harbingers of new modes of interaction with space. They altered the commercial transportation networks of the region that had depended for centuries on camel caravans traveling along well-established but flexible pathways. People also found a new mobility in the train.

Mediterranean basin, Turkey has a climate which is one of 41 countries in the world with 174 million trees 4 is the presence of most olive producing countries. However, in Turkey olive cultivation, the quality is not at the desired level in processing and marketing. In this study, on data principles and statistical of Agricultural Sciences, world, olive condition, and Manisa, Turkey, Turkey general condition on the basis of and provinces olive yield and quality issues and their impact factors has been studied in comparison. In addition, the effects of the change of the demographic structure of the human labor force, which is the most important driving force of agriculture, which is a labor- intensive production activity, in the rural areas in which production takes place, on the agriculture and olive cultivation. DISSERTATION ANTHROPOLOGY DEPARTMENT YEDİTEPE UNIVERSITY JULY, 2018 APPROVAL PAGE i PLAGIARISM ii ABSTRACT This anthropological research investigates the rites of passage of the Yoruks of Ahmetli Village, the social organisation around the rites, social solidarity and the influence of rites on cultural continuity. In order to make these clear, the division of labour in the rites and the stages of the passage, what is changed as the result of these stages (individually/socially) and the relationship between how each position is structured are examined in this research. In order to understand the relation between the people in the village and the rites, their daily lives, beliefs, attitudes, actions and their relationships with other people and with the environment are observed. At the same time, the research focused on the behaviours and the tactics that village people exhibit in order to protect their own existence in the face of the changing circumstances. The fieldwork that includes participant observation and interview techniques was conducted predominantly in 2016. I stayed in the houses of the local people, while I was conducting a fieldwork that took almost one year and covered all four seasons. I participated in a large part of the rites that took place during this period, integrating myself in the daily lives of villagers. I analysed the rites by observing their position in the daily life.. While focusing on the stages of the rites of passage namely weddings, births and deaths during the analysis, I aimed to understand the metaphorical structure and the role and influence of the rites in providing solidarity and continuity formed around the fact of "passing to a new position" As a result, I have witnessed that the rites are carried out within the framework of solidarity and division of labour in the village during the occasions of the birth, wedding and death.

In the Center, Ahmetli, Akhisar, Alasehir, Demirci, Golmarmara, Kirkagaç, Salihli, Sarigol, Saruhanli and Turgutlu districts, 35 thrips species from the Thripidae, Phlaeothripidae and Aeolothripidae families belong to Thysanoptera were detected. Rubiothrips vitis (Priesner), Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Drepanothrips reuteri Uzel, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), Mycterothrips albidicornis (Knechtel), M. tschirkunae (Jachontov), Haplothrips aculeatus Fabricius, H. globiceps (Bagnall), H. reuteri Uzel were the most abundant phytophagous species, whereas Scolothrips longicornis Priesner, Aeolothrips collaris Priesner and A. intermedius Bagnall were the most common predatory species. According to the results obtained Ahmetli, Alasehir and Center districts of Manisa were evaluated as the most infested districts in terms of number of species and their densities.     Turkey: Follow-Up Procedure to the Fifty-Seventh Session of the Committee Against Torture

    TURKEY: FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE TO THE FIFTY-SEVENTH SESSION OF THE COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE Peace Islands Institute has taken note of the Concluding Observations made by the Committee against Torture in May 2016 (CAT/C/TUR/CO/4), following the consideration of the fourth periodic report of Turkey (CAT/C/TUR/4), at its 1406th and 1409th meetings, held on 26 and 27 April 2016. Following the adoption of the Concluding Observations, on July 15, 2016 Turkey underwent through an unsuccessful military coup. By July 17, 2016, both the Government and the Army General Staff announced that they had full and absolute control throughout the country; however on July 20, 2016, the Government proclaimed a state of emergency for a period of three months. The following day (July 21, 2016), the decision on the state of emergency was communicated to the United Nations and the Council of Europe, along with a notice of derogation from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). By the end of September 2016, President Erdoğan dismissed criticism over plans to extend the state of emergency, indicating that the initial three-month state of emergency could be extended to over a year. On October 3, 2016 the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the state of emergency will be extended for an additional period of 3-months, starting from October 19, 2016. An unprecedented purge targeting citizens from all walks of life, in particular in the education, media, business, military and justice sectors is still ongoing, with measures introduced under the umbrella of the state of emergency severely limiting individual rights and liberties.
