Craig Watkins Freelancing has become increasingly common in a variety of industries due to the continued economic restructuring of post-industrial capitalism. While writing has traditionally been a precarious profession characterized by low pay and intermittent work, once secure forms of employment, such as newspaper work, have experienced a precipitous decline within the past few decades. As the number of writers engaged in standard employment contracts has sharply decreased, an increasing number of individuals must engage in freelance work to earn a living as writers. While all freelance writers face precarity at the hands of digital media outlets due to exploitative and unstable labor and business practices, black freelancers experience distinct forms of precarity, such as a lack of access to professional networks and mentors. This report aims to identify the ways in which digital technologies allow black freelancers to insulate themselves from the risks inherent to the digital media ecosystem, ending with recommendations for education systems, digital media organizations and freelancers seeking to promote equity in digital publishing.

Council of Fashion Designers of America ANNUAL REPORT 2017 The mission of the Council of Fashion Designers of America is to strengthen the impact of American fashion in the global economy. B 1 Letter from the Chairwoman, Diane von Furstenberg, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, Steven Kolb In fashion, we respond to the world we live in, a point that was powerfully driven home in 2017. We were excited to see talents with broad cultural backgrounds and political ideas begin to express their experiences and beliefs through their collections. Diversity moved into the spotlight in ways we have never seen before. Designers embraced new approaches to business, from varying show formats to disruptive delivery cycles. It was also the year to make your voices heard, and CFDA listened. We engaged in civic initiatives important to our industry and partnered with Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and FWD.us. We also relaunched our CFDA Health Initiative with guidelines to help those impacted by sexual assault or other forms of abuse. There’s no going back. In 2018, CFDA is moving ahead at full speed with an increased focus on inclusivity and women in fashion, the latter through an exciting new study with Glamour magazine. We may be a reflection of the world we live in, but we also work hard to make that world a better place. Altruism, after all, never goes out of style. 3 CFDA STRENGTHENED PILLARS WITH MISSION-DRIVEN ACTIONS MEMBERSHIP Fashion Professional Fashion Civic+ Retail Partnership Week + Market Development Supply Chain Philanthropy Opportunities SUSTAINABILITY INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT SOCIAL AND EDITORIAL MARKETING AND EVENTS KEY UNCHANGED MODIFIED NEW PROVIDED INITIATIVES RELEVANT TO DESIGNERS EMERITUS AT EVERY STAGE OF CAREER DESIGNERS • Board Engagement • Philanthropy and Civic ICONIC Responsibility DESIGNERS • Mentorship • Editorial Visibility • Board Engagement • Fashion Week • Philanthropy and Civic ESTABLISHED Responsibility DESIGNERS • Mentorship • Editorial Visibility • NETWORK.

  • Holiday Spirit Department Stores Have Long Attracted Shoppers for More Than Just Gift Buying, but a Touch of Seasonal Joy and Whimsy As Well
DAILY EDITION DECEMBER 24, 2019 Fashion. Beauty. Business. Holiday Spirit Department stores have long attracted shoppers for more than just gift buying, but a touch of seasonal joy and whimsy as well. The interior of Galeries Lafayette, seen here, offers tidings on a grand scale. Storefronts provide retailers a chance to add some fun and fantasy to their exteriors and that holiday spirit was on display across the globe. For more, see pages 6 to 10. PHOTOGRAPH BY DOMINIQUE MAÎTRE 2 DECEMBER 24, 2019 Shoppers on Super Saturday in New York City. season overall. Business was “spotty” through most of December after a robust Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday stretch. Also, the apparel sector is generally soft, particularly outerwear due to erratic weather patterns; there are six fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, meaning shopping would be more compressed close to Christmas raising the likelihood, and the week after Christmas is important particularly for returns and gift card redemptions. Some analysts believe the shorter calendar leads to less browsing and fewer impulse and self-purchasing simply because there is less time to shop. CPG’s results are based on both store and online sales calculated from quantitative surveys conducted by the firm’s 18-researcher field team across 50 major retailers in more than 100 mall and off-mall shopping venues that CGP has tracked since 2005. Robust job and wage growth along with healthy household finances drove the increase, Johnson said. CGP’s holiday analysis tracks all Census Bureau retail categories except for autos, gasoline/ oil and restaurants. Industrial-strength promoting, weather conditions conducive to getting out and shopping, and the late Hanukkah, which began Sunday night, would have also factored into the results.
