EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Brief History: rd th PECT Survey for 3 & 4 Line between Pune-Lonavala was sanctioned in 1997 – 98 and report was submitted to Railway Board in 2001 at a total cost of Rs.322.44 cr. Further, RECT survey for only 3rd line was sanctioned by Railway Board in 2011-12 and the Survey Report was under scrutiny at HQ. The work for Third B. G. Line between Pune -Lonavala was sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book Item no. 22 of Demand No. 16 under Doubling for the year 2015-16 at the cost of Rs. 800 crores. Detailed Project Report with feasibility study and detailed construction estimate for proposed third B.G. line was prepared by Central Railway at a total cost of Rs. 943.60 Crore. It was sanctioned by Railway Board vide letter No. 2015/W1/NER/DL/BSB-MBS-ALD dated 31.03.2016 under Gross Budgetary support. The work has been assigned to Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) vide Railway Board‟s letter No. 2015/W-1/Genl/Presentation/Pt dated 11.12.205. Hon‟ble Chief Minister of Government of Maharashtra vide his D.O. letter No. MRD-3315/CR44/UD-7 dated 23.02.2016 addressed to Hon‟ble Minister of Railways had requested for sanction of 3rd and 4th line between Pune – Lonavala to run suburban and main line train services.

Urban growth puts enormous pressure on Pune’s land and water resources, changing the ecology of the area. The increasing water demand of Pune’s growing population competes with growing energy and water demands. An assessment of future climate change impacts indicates that the storage capacity of the reservoirs is more frequently not met during the rainy season.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background In 1970s and 1980s, industrialization was at the peak stage in India. Pimpri-Chichwad Municipal Corporation was not exception to this process. Once upon a time, Pimpri- Chinchwad industrial belt was the largest industrial belt in the Asian Continent. Most of the MNCs had their plant in this industrial belt and this was the center next to Bombay where maximum labour force was absorbed. Due to the boost of industrialization, substantially large amount of employment opportunities were created. Thus, since 1980s onwards, this city has got unexpected exploration of population growth to the extent that the numbers of migrant people were more than two times than the original population. Till 1970, Pimpri-Chinchwad area was under the governance of PMC. However, it was separated from PMC in 1990. Thus new corporation was formed in 1970 and in 1975, it has got 'A' grade. At the beginning, there was abandoned vacant places were available for settlement. Naturally, the population migrated from various places arrived in this city for employment opportunities get settled wherever they find open space and thus unplanned growth of unauthorized settlement started and hrther it continued to grow. Over the period of years, sustained efforts made by PCMC have arrested the growth of slums and the further problems. In the present scenario, due to over population, the tremendous pressure on public utility services has been created.
