    Bristol and West Country Pewter This article is here to show some of the pewterware produced in this area, mostly in the 18th and 19th century. It is a random selection, chosen simply because the illustrations were available, and could be used here without infringing any copyrights. There is no intention on this website to provide a full education in this subject. Please be clear the intention is to tempt those interested to seek out more information for themselves and to take a greater interest in the subject. Hopefully helping those interested to look at pewter with a little more knowledge when they see it. But for better informed opinion perhaps you should also look at the UK Pewter Society website. Most people (though certainly not all) selling old British pewter have little or no idea what they are selling – so hopefully this website gives the reader a few clues and guidance as to where to find better information. So which geographical area is referred to here? The answer is mostly Bristol, but some from Essex, North Devon, (generally west of Exeter) pieces found in Wales, and further afield. Bewdley is not especially shown here as it is hoped to offer an article at some later date concerning Bewdley (Glos).     ‘One of the most backward areas of the country’: The Labour Party’s Grass Roots in South West England, 1918–45 Andrew Thorpe In Britain as a whole, the period between 1918 and 1945 saw the Labour Party move from being the third party in the state to a position of majority government. Most regions of Britain saw a similarly impressive improvement in the party’s electoral fortunes. Yet the four counties to the south and west of Bristol, although seeing some progress, remained, in the language much used by Labour organisers of the time, ‘backward’. 1 In Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, Labour’s profile did increase in this period, but from an extremely low base and to a far lesser extent than in most other regions. Only two of the region’s 27 constituencies ever elected a Labour MP before 1945: Frome, in Somerset, in 1923 and 1929, and Plymouth Drake in 1929. This meant that the 189 parliamentary contests at the seven interwar general elections yielded only three Labour victories. It was only in its national annus mirabilis of 1945, indeed, that Labour in the South West even managed to displace the Liberals from second place in terms of votes won. But even then, only six of the 27 constituencies elected Labour MPs: all three in Plymouth, two in Somerset (Frome and Taunton), and one in Cornwall (Penryn and Falmouth). Perhaps because of this relative lack of success, historians have been slow to study the region. 2 Yet, attention to it might tell us much, not just about Labour in the South West, but also about the development of the party more generally.

    Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Research Framework: Resource Assessment and Research Agenda 6 Romano-British (AD 43 – 410) Edited by Charles Johns from contributions from Sarnia Butcher, Kevin Camidge, Dan Charman, Ralph Fyfe, Andy M Jones, Steve Mills, Jacqui Mulville, Henrietta Quinnell, and Paul Rainbird. 6.1 Introduction Although Scilly was a very remote part of the Roman Empire it occupied a pivotal position on the Atlantic façade along the routes of trade and cultural interchange between Brittany and Western Britain; unlike Cornwall, however, it was not a source of streamed tin. The cultural origins of Roman Scilly are rooted in the local Iron Age but sites can be identified which reflect the cult practices of the wider Roman world. Charles Thomas (1985, 170-2) envisaged Roman Scilly as a place of pilgrimage, dominated by a shrine to a native marine goddess at Nornour in the Eastern Isles. The rich Roman finds from that site are among the most iconic and enigmatic emblems of Scilly’s archaeological heritage. The main characteristics of Scilly’s Romano-British (AD 43 to AD 410) resource are summarised in this review. Fig 6.1 Iron Age and Romano-British sites recorded in the Scilly HER 6.2 Landscape and environmental background Results from the Lyonesse Project (Charman et al 2012) suggest that the present pattern of islands was largely formed by this period, although the intertidal zone was much greater in extent (Fig 6.2). Radiocarbon dating and environmental analysis of the lower peat deposit sample from Old Town Bay, St Mary’s, i n 1997 indicated that from the Late Iron Age to the early medieval period the site consisted of an area of shallow freshwater surrounded by a largely open landscape with arable fields and pasture bordering the wetland (Ratcliffe and Straker 1998, 1).

Understand the scale and volume of the trade’s engagement and sale of the South West of England. Understand barriers to engagement; and the potential for barriers to be relaxed. The research will form part of a 3-year legacy whose ultimate aim is to facilitate growth in visitor numbers and spend in the South West, hence benefiting the wider economy of the region. This will deliver an evidence based work programme to support future activity and strategic objectives. Methodology Stage One – Sample Recruitment An initial online survey was sent to ETOA travel trade buyers and a selection of other non-ETOA members and overseas operators sourced via Visit Britain overseas teams, optimised by offering an incentive such as a family holiday for 4 in the South West. The survey asked 4 questions: 1) Do you currently sell the South West of England to your clients? (answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’). 2) If you have answered ‘yes’ which of the following products do you sell? (tick list provided) 3) If you do not currently sell the South West, would you be interested in hearing more about how their products and services might match your client’s profile (tick yes or no). 4) Would you be happy to take part in further research (tick yes, no). At the conclusion of the online survey, ETOA created a sample list comprising members who currently sell the South West and those who are not currently selling the South West but are willing to participate in further research/could be influenced to sell the South West.
