Main Events During the Winter Season in Bormio Bormio and the Alta Valtellina area are located in the centre of the Alps, in the midst of vast natural surroundings. The white of the eternal snow of the glaciers, the bright green of the woods and meadows, the blue of the sky and the transparency of the water are the colors that best describe its landscape. A paradise for sports, nature, art and culture lovers, as well as for relax and wellness during all seasons. The area offers more than 170 km of slopes for alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. Moreover it gives you the possibility to ski even during the summer on the Stelvio Pass. Particularly fascinating are ski mountaineering and snowshoeing excursions on the paths of the Stelvio National Park, which during the summer turn into more than 600 km of trails to ride with your mountain bike or enjoy on foot. Furthermore, road bike fans can try some of the most demanding climbs that have given prestige to cycling in Italy and in all the world: Stelvio Pass, Gavia Pass and Mortirolo. A nine-hole golf course, an ice stadium, a curling rink, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a bowls court and infinitive other activities allow you to experience the unique pleasure of the mountains. A walk in the beautiful historical town of Bormio, with its churches, “palazzi” and museums will give you the occasion to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of other times. On May 13, 1909, the Giro’s first peloton of 127 riders (41 of the enrollees didn’t show up) met at the Piazzale Loreto in downtown Milan where La Gazzetta’s offices Red Devil, were situated. The eight-stage race went from Milan to Bologna and onward to Chieti, Naples, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Turin, returning to Milan on the 30th. Riders would cover 2,445 kilometers over eight stages, an average stage length of 306 kilometers, the Fist, not far from the Tour’s average. This was to be the shortest Giro ever. It should be noted that in the early years of bike racing distances were approximate. The various lengths we have for the first Giro, 2408, 2448, and 2445 kilometers—each from a dif- ferent but respected Italian writer—are all within the expected and the range of accuracy of the age. To minimize cheating and confusion, each of the riders was King of Mud photographed at the start for later comparison by the judges. Just as in the first couple of editions of the Tour, the Giro would allow several days of recovery between each stage. The riders faced roads that could only be described as menacing, especially in economically disadvantaged southern Italy.

The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian DIFFERENCE IN ALTITUDE 1543 MT Empire. Since then, the route has changed very little. AVARAGE GRADIENT 6,56% After the traffic light in Bormio's centre you arrive soon at the first MAX GRADIENT 13% switchback on the way to the Stelvio. Further on a few more turns follow, one of them being the junction to Valdidentro and Livigno. HARPINS 36 You carry on into the direction of the "Bagni Vecchi", the old thermal These are followed by a section with not too many curves, but some tunnels to cross, and soon after those you find yourself in front of the steepest part of the Stelvio road, to conquer by numerous switchbacks. In this stretch the maximum gradient will be reached, and you can admire the Braulio-Waterfalls. After having passed this uphill, you get to the Plateau "Pian de Grembo", where the road gets low running and leads through alpine meadows. At the end of this flat part, the last steep uphill to reach the Stelvio begins. And from here the top of the pass comes even in sight. Passing by the junction into the direction of the Umbrail Pass and Santa Maria, only a few kilometres and about 250 metres in altitude are left to reach the top of the Stelvio Pass.
