After the successes we had last year we followed things up with two “spirits only” auctions from our London sale room. But this is the first London wine sale of 2021, and our third-ever London wine auction. If you’ve been following our colleagues in our Hong Kong and United States sale rooms you know how much great wine there is on the market right now. We’ve had our annual partnership with La Paulée, our first-ever Spirits-only auctions, and set hundreds of world records along the way. We are in the middle of an unbelievably busy June, with our partnership with Premiere Napa Valley, and the sales of wines from such collecting luminaries as George Caloyannidis and Tawfiq Khoury. I’m delighted to continue along this path of success with this sale. Not only do we have wine from Pioneers, an offering now being sold on its third con- tinent, we have an amazing consignment from right here on the continent. Starting on lot 34, this is the same consignment sold earlier in the year as the “DRC Only” sale in New York (there’s additional wine here, not just DRC). Following this consignment is the heart of this auction, at lot 50. This consignment is all about the Burgundy, with easily the largest offering of DRC we have ever sold at Zachys Europe! There’s also Dugat-Py, Faiveley, Trapet, Mugnier, and many more. Later in the auction is a wonderful group of Mascarello, which graces the cover of this catalog, and it wouldn’t be a London sale without an amazing offering of Chartreuse starting at lot 324. This sale has something for everyone, for sure, so please get those bids in early to [email protected]! Sincerely, Christy Erickson Head of Europe 4 5 PIONEERS IV (LOTS 1-33) You may remember this consignor by his incredible selection of Cheval Blanc, and if you do, then get ready for more the same excellence. If you don’t, well then keep reading. This consignor is a pioneer in the business world, a man who forged his own path. A large part of this collection was purchased directly from Zachys retail. Once again, the offering of Cheval Blanc alone is one of the best ever put into a Zachys auction, with dozens of the legendary 1990. Your cellar will thank you for adding even just one lot from this consignment to your cellar, trust us! 6 ZACHYS tel 1.914.448.3026 • fax 1.914.313.2350 • [email protected] • zachys.com PIONEERS IV CHÂTEAU CHEVAL BLANC Cheval Blanc has a relatively short history compared with the other top-rank châteaux of Bordeaux. As recently as the 1830s it was still a part of Figeac. A portion of that estate was sold to the Ducasse family, then owners of L’Evangile, and by twenty years later, when a Ducasse married a Fourcard-Loussac, the property was already some thirty-one hectares in size. The estate remained with the Fourcard-Loussac family until part of it was sold to Bernard Arnault and his company, LVMH, in 1998. Today, along with Château d’Yquem, it is fully owned by Arnault and managed by the dynamic Pierre Lurton. Cheval Blanc, across the road from Pomerol, has distinctive soil makeup: about twenty percent sand, forty percent clay and forty percent gravel. In the gravelly and sandy areas the roots have to work hard to stay alive and often reach depths of seven to eight meters, compared with two to three meters in the clay areas. Today the roughly thirty-seven hectares of vineyards are planted with sixty percent Cabernet Franc and forty percent Merlot. Yields are typically thirty-five hl/ha, and the annual production of 6500 to 7000 cases is bottled after eighteen to twenty-four months in new oak. • 155Th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION an Unprecedented
155th HOSPICES DE BEAUNE WINE AUCTION An unprecedented record year revolving around generosity and know-how and which will never be forgotten. Last Sunday, the auction started with one minute of silence and the rendition of the French national anthem La Marseillaise in homage to the victims of terrorist attacks that took place in Paris less than 48 hours earlier. From the first bids, and throughout the sale, prices highly increased (+ 27.23% for the reds, + 32.75% for the whites compared to 2014). This increase can be explained by the exceptional quality of the 2015 vintage and the growing passion from collectors for great Burgundy wines. The auction, which was presided over by French news anchor Claire Chazal and French actor Christophe Lambert, proved to be a record breaker, with sales totaling more than €10,000,000 for the 575 barrels that were up for auction. The “Piece des Presidents”, a Corton Grand Cru Renardes also sold for a record €480,000, of which one third will go to support the families of the victims of terrorist attacks. Once again, Albert Bichot confirmed its position as the leading buyer at the auction with the purchase of 61 barrels for a total amount of €1,329,900. For over fifteen years now, the House of Albert Bichot has stood out for its participation at this world famous wine auction. Albéric Bichot considers that Albert Bichot’s role, as one of the most important names in Burgundy wine, is to promote the reputation of the region and its wines at an international level while, at the same time, supporting local or national charities.

150TH WINE SALE OF THE HOSPICES DE BEAUNE 21 NOVEMBER 2010 - The Hospices de Beaune and Christie’s are celebrating the 150th Wine Sale in China. - A new Cuvée : Santenay «Cuvée Christine Friedberg» - A famous Cuvée changes its name in honor of the King Louis XIV : « Cuvée du Roi Soleil » FROM BEAUNE TO BEIJIN China at the heart of the 150th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction Two parts of the world each with a great history meet again: China and France, and in particular the renowned wine region Burgundy. This time, our two cultures are to meet thanks to a heritage which is becoming more and more universal: wine. At the heart of Burgundy, Beaune is the Capital City of wine, and the Hospices de Beaune Domaine stands as its incomparable and irreplaceable emblem. Since the 15th Century, Beaune and Hospices wines have been conveying the very special taste of our land. For the last 150 years, these wines have been reaching the rest of the world thanks to a charity auction. At the same time, we have been fortunate enough to have the chance to sample numerous varieties of the finest Chinese teas - something that our friends in China have for centuries been enjoying. We therefore know that you are sensitive to subtle nuances, and will appreciate the various expressions of our 'Climats', our vineyard plots. I look forward to seeing our worlds coming together more often, where we can rely on our common language, the language of wine. Alain Suguenot, President, Hospices de Beaune MP and Mayor of Beaune TO FOLLOW IN JOSEPH PÉTASSE FOOTSTEPS In 1443, Nicolas Rollin, Chancellor of the Philip le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, built a hospital for the poor in Baune at his own expense.
