LEGENDS OF THE WEST: MARK BOSNICH

Story by Daniel Hemingway

Controversial, flamboyant and inspirational are three words often used to describe Mark “Bozza” Bosnich but the word that is used far more than any other is legend.

n 13 January 1972 Mark Bosnich was born in the Western Sydney suburb of Liverpool, just 20 Okilometres from Wanderland, and he would go on to be one of the best shot stoppers the game has ever seen. Like most young people growing up in the heartland of football it wasn’t long before Bosnich’s passion for the sport took over his life. He spent his schoolboy days playing for Sydney Croatia and it was his stand out performances for the club that caught the attraction of European giants Manchester United. In 1989, aged just 17, Bozza signed for the Red Devils on a casual basis where he would go on to feature three times for the club. His debut came on a cold Monday night in Manchester as Wimbledon, known then as “The Crazy Gang” were the visitors. The match featured household names Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Steve Bruce, Viv Anderson, Dennis Wise and John Fashanu and ended 0-0. A clean sheet on debut for a young Australian boy at Old Trafford in front of an attendance of over 29,000 is something of dreams.

WSWANDERERSFC.COM.AU 26

Despite featuring two more times for Manchester United the following season, he was unable to obtain a work permit for England and was forced home where he returned to his old stomping ground in Western Sydney, playing for Sydney United. However, Bosnich had gained the attention of many European clubs during his stint at Old Trafford and he only played five times for his Western Sydney side before being snapped up by Aston Villa. Signed by Ron Atkinson on a free transfer Bosnich move to the “Black Country” where his debut came in an away match against Luton Town where The Hatters ran out winners over Villa. The following season Bosnich played a bigger role for the club featuring 18 times in all competitions as Aston Villa recorded their highest ever place in the Premier League, finishing runners-up behind Manchester United. It was the 93/94 campaign where Bosnich truly began to shine as he took over the number one position at . Playing over 40 games in all competitions, the goalkeeper won his first major trophy, lifting the League Cup at . Bosnich became an instant cult hero with the club having saved three penalty kicks in the semi-final against Tranmere Rovers. The 1995/96 season was the year that many football pundits claim was the best in Bosnich’s career. Keeping an incredible 21 clean sheets in 51 appearances for the club, Bosnich was regarded as the best goalkeeper 27 in the Premier League: no mean feat considered the in 2008, finishing his footballing days where likes of David Seaman, and Bryan they started, in the suburbs of Sydney. Gunn were at the top of their game at that period. Due to his club commitments during the height Villa would go on to finish in fourth place and of his career he only featured 17 times for his win the League Cup for a second time in three country but is one of the very few goalkeepers seasons defeating Leeds United in the final. that have scored for the Green and Gold. His second debut for the Red Devils came at Wembley as United lost to Arsenal in the Charity Shield. Unfazed by the defeat the Australian only conceded one goal in the first three games of the season before spending the next two months on the side lines with a hamstring injury. Once he returned from injury he remained Ferguson’s first choice for the remainder of the season. Manchester United went on to win the Premier League by a massive 18 points making Mark Bosnich only the second Australian to lift the Premier League crown. Unfortunately Ferguson wasn’t convinced that Bozza was the right man to replace the Great Dane and he lost the number one position to a little Frenchman called Fabien Bartez. In his final seven games Bosnich kept five clean sheets including a goalless draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeau. After a public falling out with the manager, Bosnich moved to West London to rebuild his career with Chelsea. It didn’t go to plan as he suffered an injury set back and didn’t make his debut until the following season. Bosnich then famously failed a drug test and admitting to being addicted to Cocaine. He was sacked from Chelsea Football Club and banned from playing football for nine months. Bosnich would only play a further 12 matches in his career when he returned to Australia HOLIDAY CLINICS BOOK IN NOW SK
