Welcome to the NSW Premier League 2011

The NSW Premier League is the state’s premier football competition encompassing twelve clubs from the greater area. It features the top local talent NSW has to offer and is a critical pathway from local to national football.

As we enter the eleventh season of the NSW Premier League we can reflect on the past ten years of development and growth in the competition. Year on year the NSW Premier League is regarded as ’s number one nursery of talent, producing tomorrow’s A-League stars. Players, such as Panny Nikas (North Fury), Matthew Ryan (Central Coast Mariners), ( United), Hirofumi Moriyasu (Sydney FC) and (Sydney FC), as well as Coaches, such as (Central Coast Mariners), have all moved on from the NSW Premier League in 2010 to leave a significant impression on the 2010/2011 A-League season.

Such achievements are in no small part due to the interest and enthusiasm of those in the media, whether you are with one of the major national or metropolitan media organisations, regional or suburban media or community/niche media. As a media representative, you play a key role in helping us ensure the sport, the competition, the players, the referees, the coaches and the clubs are part of what NSW football public talk about and importantly want to be part of throughout the season.

I trust that the 2011 NSW Premier League Media Guide will be of significant assistance to you this season. We value and appreciate the contribution of the media in promoting our game and thank you for your commitment in season 2011. I also encourage you to contact the Football NSW Media and Communications department for further help or information at any time.

I can assure you we value and appreciate the contribution you make to our game.

Thank you for your commitment to football; and best wishes for the season.

Media Guidelines

Introduction

MEDIAGUIDELINES Football NSW appreciates the assistance of all media representatives and organisations in their commitment and coverage of the NSW Premier League.

As in the past, the continual support from the media is an essential component of the overall success of the competition.

Our goal is to ensure that the NSW Premier League receives coverage in a wide range of mediums and publications throughout NSW.

These Media Guidelines are issued to ensure we provide the working media with the best possible opportunity to report both accurately and immediately from each match and to enable you to fulfil your working requirements. For us to achieve these goals we require your co-operation and support.

Media passes are strictly for personnel authorised to hold Media Accreditation and must only be used while the holder is working at the game.

Lodgement of a Football NSW media accreditation application form constitutes an agreement by the authorising media organisation and any person seeking accreditation to abide by the conditions as set out in the Football NSW Rules and Regulations.

10 www.nswpl.com.au

Media Accreditation

The Football NSW Media and Communications Department manages all media and photographer accreditations for Football NSW Competitions.

All media that require a media accreditation pass must complete a ‘Football NSW Media Accreditation Application Form’. Applications close on the 11th of April, 2011. The pass is non-transferable. MEDIAGUIDELINES

No television crew, film crew, or commercial video production company may shoot any footage of any official Football NSW matches without first obtaining permission in writing from Football NSW. This includes ‘stand-ups’ or ‘pieces to camera’ with the crowd, stadium and/or game in the background.

Only Football NSW passes are valid at Football NSW fixtures. Football Federation Australia (formerly, Australian Football Association or ) media passes will not be observed as official accreditation.

Spokespersons

Media seeking interviews with club representatives should contact the relevant media contact. Media seeking comment from Football NSW on any issue should contact the Media and Communications Department in the first instance.

Referees

A Football NSW representative, match referee, or any other official, is not available to comment on any matter which is, or is likely to be, one for consideration within the Football NSW disciplinary context.

Media Contacts

The Football NSW Media and Communications Department is responsible for coordinating all media activity regarding the NSW Premier League.

Each club has a designated contact responsible for the media activity of the club as well as attending to media enquires related to the club. Details of each club’s media representative are provided at the beginning of each club’s section in this guide.

Filming of Football NSW Fixtures

No person may film Football NSW fixtures for any commercial use, without first obtaining prior written approval from the Football NSW Media and Communications Department, at least 24 hours prior to such vision being sought.

Television News crews are permitted to film fixtures for editorial and non-advertising purposes at the discretion of the host club or the Football NSW Media and Communications Department. Written approval may be necessary prior to such vision being sought.

Press

The Football NSW media pass will provide access to all Football NSW venue media areas on match days, including the press box and post match media conference room. At no point is access permitted to the dressing rooms or the field of play before, during or after the match, without the permission of a Football NSW or club official. Importantly, access to Media Boxes is for working, accredited media only. In the event of overcrowding in a media box at a game venue, preference will be given to immediate deadline press.

www.nswpl.com.au 11

Photographers

Photographic accreditation to cover the NSW Premier League 2011 season will only be granted on the express condition that photographs taken at all Football NSW authorised matches, official events or any event or occasion which displays Football NSW logos shall be used only for editorial and non-advertising purposes and MEDIAGUIDELINES not for any commercial purpose other than as specified in the ‘Football NSW Media Accreditation Application Form’ (For the avoidance of doubt, commercial purposes include using photographs for licensing endorsements, merchandising, memorabilia or marketing).

For the duration of the match, excluding team-line up shots pre kick-off, all accredited photographers must remain behind the perimeter fence. Permission for accredited photographers to shoot from the sidelines is at the discretion of match officials.

The only exception to this rule is Football NSW's Official Photographer, who will be clearly identified, and is able to shoot from either sideline.

Bibs shall be worn at all times whilst within the perimeters of the stadium and will only be issued by the home match officials to photographers accredited by Football NSW. Whilst within the perimeters of the stadium, photographer’s bibs must not be covered up by any other clothing (in case of inclement weather, etc, bibs must be worn OVER any other clothing).

The use of artificial lighting by photographers in the form of flashlight is strictly prohibited.

Disregard of any of the above will lead to the revoking of Photographers Accreditation.

Match Reports

Football NSW will file match report media releases to all relevant news agencies each Monday; following the weekends fixtures. Match reports will contain exclusive content from the team coach, captain and/or significant player from the match. In addition to an email media release, all match reports will also appear on the relevant Football NSW website within twelve (12) hours of completion. MEDIAGUIDELINES Media Preview and Review Reports

The Football NSW Media and Communications Department will issue a preview media release for each round.

A review media release will also be distributed by the Football NSW Media and Communications Department to all relevant news agencies within twelve (12) hours of completion of the final game of the round.

APIA LEICHHARDT TIGERS

The Team: A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers played an exceptional second half of the season in 2010 and were only narrowly pipped of a Preliminary Final showdown with Premiers Bonnyrigg White Eagles following an extra-time loss in the Elimination Semi Final against Sydney United. The Tigers have retained the greater part of their playing roster from last season meaning the side is ready to pick up from where they left last season. Playmaker Nicola Rizzo will again be called upon to send his strikers Franco Parisi and Robbie Younis towards goal, along with new signing Sam Messam. Former All Whites youth international Chris James will also be dangerous in the Tigers midfield as the 23-year-old has impressed during the NSW Premier League pre-season and will no doubt feature amongst the action this year. In defence, the likes of Mark Byrnes, John Kelso and

former New Zealand international Cole Tinkler will keep the rearguard in order, ahead of new signing Jose

Bello Amigo.

CLUBDIRECTORY The Coach: Billy McColl took over as caretaker coach for the Tigers early last season and the Scotsman did not disappoint as he guided the side to the Finals Series in what was a terrific second half of the season by the club. McColl has gained the respect of the players and has been involved on and off with the club for almost 25 years. Having selected the bulk of the same squad from 2010, McColl will be motivating his chargers for yet another top five finish.

Player to watch: Nicola Rizzo’s experience, composure on the ball and vision place a great emphasis on his role this season. Played as the linchpin between the midfield and front pairing, expect to see Rizzo provide a number of assists this season. A fine striker of the ball also, Rizzo’s set pieces will no doubt also provide reward for the Tigers with a positive return on the goals front.

Rising : Andrew Vitucci is a name that will certainly be on the eyes of many Tigers faithful when the NSW Premier League season commences. The rising midfielder made his debut for the senior side midway through 2010 and cemented his place as one of the Tigers’ most promising players. Recently captaining the Tigers’ U20 squad that went off to the 2011 Viareggio Tournament in Italy, Vitucci will once again look towards consolidating more game time under McColl.

Bankstown City Lions

The Team: Bankstown City FC are facing a struggle heading in to the competition this season simply due to the large number of changes to the playing personnel. The side however did retain captain Zlatko Joseski, speedy winger Stefanos Liavas, hardworking Shannon Burgin and goal poacher Hussein Salameh, four players that will each carry extra responsibility come the start of the season. These players will be required to assist the new arrivals and ensure Bankstown City returns to challenging for silverware this season. The appointment of an experienced campaigner such as Blagoja Kuleski as coach also stands the side in good stead to settle down quickly, as the Jensen Park supporters certainly do not want to wait another season for a return as a title contender.

The Coach: Blagoja Kuleski takes over the coaching reins at Bankstown City, boasting an

impressive player and management career. Following his exceptional career in Europe, CLUBDIRECTORY Kuleski showed his worth as a player with the likes of Marconi in the NSL before moving onto stints with Zebras, Bulleen Lions and Rockdale City Suns. Kuleski’s coaching pedigree is equally impressive having twice won the NSW Super League competition with Bonnyrigg White Eagles, securing Bonnyrigg a return to the Premier League. His experience and football knowledge will be sincerely needed by an almost entirely new Bankstown City squad.

Player to watch: Hussein Salameh takes over the number 10 jersey left by Robert Mileski, and the Lions striker will carry the hopes of the Bankstown City supporters on his shoulders this season. An exceptional athlete with a good finish in front of goal, Salameh is one of the few survivors from last season’s mass exodus at the club. The Lebanese born attacker will be expected to continue his football development as Blagoja Kuleski will want goals from his number 10.

Rising Star: Midfielder Steven Krsteski got a look into the first grade side last season, though 2011 promises to be a real opportunity for the youngster. Confident with the ball at his feet, Krsteski has a strong positional sense in the midfield line and could really be a revelation for the Lions this season.

Blacktown City FC

The Team: Blacktown City FC will start the 2011 campaign as the team to beat following their heroic Grand Final defeat of Bonnyrigg White Eagles last season. Blacktown City’s initial challenge will be to move on without a good number of last season’s championship winning side, though the off season has been promising with some handy additions made to the playing roster. Tough tackling Milorad Simonovic will add his presence to the centre of midfield, with the former White Eagles player always a good shout for goals from deep. Sean Mitchell too will play an important role on the flanks with his tireless running and strong delivery into the penalty-area a definite plus for Blacktown City. Chris Bedzo – who had a somewhat quieter season in 2010 – will be expected to return back to his best for this campaign. Bedzo’s neat ability to beat his

marker and score goals will be very important for the defending Premiers to repeat last season’s success.

The Coach: Mark Crittenden has the tough task of slipping into the vacant role left by CLUBDIRECTORY Aytek Genc following Blacktown City’s Grand Final winning 2010. Crittenden was Genc’s assistant last season and, to his advantage, knows the Blacktown City setup very well. The challenge for Crittenden will be how his side handles the departures of Tolgay Ozbey, Joel Chianese, Mirko Jurilj, Lachlan Cahill and Ante Deur. That said, the additions of experienced campaigners Milorad Simonovic, Michael Brown and Sean Mitchell will positively assist the defending Champions cause.

Player to watch: Luke Roodenburg returned to Blacktown City FC last season following two years abroad, and the inspirational club captain immediately brought the Championship trophy back to Blacktown. A tireless midfielder with an enormous passion for his club, Roodenburg will again be looked at for guidance this season. With the departure of so many ‘match winners’, 2011 will pose Roodenburg with an extra difficult assignment, though the energetic captain will no doubt be up for the challenge.

Rising Star: Travis Major remains one of the real stars of the future to come out of this Blacktown City FC side. Major played a tremendous role in 2010, despite his young years, to secure a winner’s medal in the grand-final defeat of Bonnyrigg White Eagles. Major’s tremendous work ethic, speedy feet and a desire to win keep him as a real star for the future of Australian football.

Bonnyrigg White Eagles

The Team: The defending Premiers were pipped at Grand Final stage last season, though that disappointment will act only as further motivation for an even more successful 2011.Bonnyrigg’s playing roster for 2011 possesses an even stronger group of players across the park with Brian Brown securing the services of some very versatile players. Brad Boardman will again be given the goal scoring duties, with Jamie McMaster and Daniel Severino to provide ample support. An already impressive midfield unit will be further strengthened with the additions of Tynan Diaz, Blake Powell, Aleksander Canak and Ben Spruce, meanwhile Michael Robinson’s inclusion in the defensive line alongside Wade Oostendorp adds further security in the back half of the field. Bonnyrigg White Eagles will certainly start the season as one of the teams to beat.

The Coach: There is no doubt that Bonnyrigg White Eagles coach Brian Brown is one of

the most consistent performing coaches in the competition. ‘Bomber’ Brown has obtained CLUBDIRECTORY exceptional results at each of the clubs he has held the reins and his run at the White Eagles has been nothing less than exceptional. Brown, with his assistant Cliff Pointer, guid- ed Bonnyrigg to the Premiership last season – the White Eagles were without a doubt the bench setters over the course of the regular season. Brown’s experience and knowhow will again see his side pitted as a title favourite, especially with the calibre of players added to the side in the off season.

Player to watch: Playmaker Daniel Severino will again be calling the shots with his pin-point left peg this season. The free-kick specialist was instrumental for Bonnyrigg last season, chiming in with a number of important assists en-route to the Grand Final. With a strong defensive unit behind him, Severino will be allowed to roam ahead of the midfield and play the linking role with his strikers. Expect more great goals from Daniel Severino in 2011.

Rising Star: Daniel Vrankovic promises to be a real star for Bonnyrigg this season following a decent showing with the Sydney FC Youth team in the National Youth League. The former NSWIS defender possesses a positive attitude and a precise reading of the game and will be an important addition to the White Eagles’ playing roster this season.

Manly United

The Team: Following a disappointing finish to the 2010 season, Manly United FC and its supporters will be hoping to return to the days of challenging for the title in 2011. An exodus of senior players at the club have certainly made Craig Midgley’s job difficult, however with the introduction of some interesting overseas imports, Manly United remain somewhat of an ‘unknown quantity’ heading into the season proper. Much expectation surrounds the list of new imports to the club, including Korean imports - goalkeeper Kang Ho Lee and midfielder Lee Seung Soo– and French striker Thibault Marchal. Graeme Forbes joins the team following a successful stint at Bonnyrigg White Eagles and he will offer security across the backline.Despite the huge test facing Midgley this season with a new group of players, his extensive experience in football will definitely

see the coach up for the challenge in 2011.

The Coach: Craig Midgley moved to Australia and signed for Manly United FC where he CLUBDIRECTORY vested the club’s colours for three seasons. In his final year, Midgley held the role of player/coach following Phil Moss’ move to A-League club Central Coast Mariners. Midgley’s objective in 2011 will be to get the team back into the finals series after missing out last season. Manly United has always been a consistent performer, challenging for silverware and producing good football.

Player to watch: Manly United’s chances of success this season will again revolve around one of their more experienced players, Robbie Cattanach. Cattanach has been a mountain of strength for Manly United over the past three seasons, even though 2010 was dogged by injury. A fit Cattanach at the age of 27 still has much to offer, and the deadly striker will be eager to push for a third Gold Medal at the season’s conclusion.

Rising Star: Midfielder Nicholas Swart will be a player to keep an eye on. The midfielder didn’t get much of a look in at first team level last season, though 2011 could be his breakthrough season. Swart possesses a good engine and good feet out of midfield and will be a key element to Manly United’s 2011 push for finals football.

Marconi Stallions

The Team: Marconi Stallions’ fine history of promoting players from their own youth system continues in 2011 with the club proud to showcase no less than twelve players in the first grade squad all of whom have played their way through various Marconi youth sides. An impressive record indeed, as are the names of Andrew Mailer, Keith Shevlin and the Sama brothers – Giosue and Nico – have been added to a sturdy squad featuring the likes of Nahuel Arrarte, Umut Tokdogan, Mitchell Mallia and goalkeeper James Chronopoulos. Creative players Graziano and Domenic Trimboli will be in search of more game time this season, meanwhile Nathan Jagelman and Matthew Hall will be both eager to cement their spots in the starting squad come Round 1. The presence of Nahuel Arrarte will be key to the Stallions chances this season. Arrarte’s exceptional

ball control and vision, combined with a huge heart and determination to match, will be the engine room that makes this Marconi team tick.

CLUBDIRECTORY The Coach: Luke Casserly is certainly an inspiration to Marconi Stallions after a long playing career with the club. Casserly’s return to the club as coach, with the assistance of Darren Iocca, certainly places the Stallions in a good position for a real shot at the title this season. Both these men have played at Marconi and are both aware of what is expected of one of Australian football’s standout clubs. Casserly’s man management will be key with the transition from player to coach with a group of players he has played with previously to be the first real test.

Player to watch: Seen as one of Marconi Stallions’ final signings to their roster for 2011, former Sydney Olympic striker Matthew Mayora will most certainly be the one to watch out for from the former NSL giants stable. Known for being amongst the goals at any given time, Mayora will add much needed firepower up-front for Casserly’s squad as he hopes to assert himself amongst the goal getters of the NSW Premier League in 2011.

Rising Star: Mitchell Mallia is a name to look out for following a promising debut season in the top-flight with Marconi Stallions. Mallia benefited from the then coach Lee Sterrey’s confidence in handing the attacking midfielder a start and the rest is history. Mallia was impeccable throughout the campaign for the Stallions, cementing a starting spot on a consistent basis. A call up to the Central Coast Mariners Youth team was just reward for the youngster and this will certainly assist Mallia’s progression as a footballer with the Stallions.

Parramatta Eagles

The Team: Parramatta FC will have a testing 2011 ahead of them as the ‘new boys’ in town will need to adapt quickly to the pace of the NSW Premier League competition. Promotion was sealed last season from the Super League following an impressive campaign and Coach Brian Dene will be working to maintain that same attitude amongst his squad to trouble the more fancied sides this season. The addition of players with Premier League experience such as Damir Padanovic and Nicholas McInerney, along with Chris Atkinson - who has played in the lower Leagues of - will certainly be a bonus. Veteran Angelo Petratos at 42-years of age continues to amaze with his hard work both on and off the pitch. Petratos has trained exceptionally well in the off season and his Premier League experience will be very important to Dene and Parramatta FC this

season. Parramatta FC will start the season as an outsider for finals football, though a strong supporter base at Melita Stadium will make the job of visiting sides very challenging in 2011.

CLUBDIRECTORY The Coach: Brian Dene completed a wonderful 2010 season with Parramatta FC, securing the club promotion into the Premier League from the NSW Super League competition. A hard working, passionate coach who is able to get the best out of his players, Dene will have his work cut out in 2011 with his side hoping to turn some heads this season. Dene has been the Australian Schoolboys coach and technical director at Parramatta FC and he certainly knows talent when he sees it. His squad will benefit with the addition of some players with Premier League experience, though the majority of the team kept from last season will know exactly what the boss will be expecting from them in 2011.

Player to watch: Having played at Sydney United and Newcastle Jets Youth team, George Strogylos is a young defender with a bright looking future ahead of him. Strogylos made history in 2008 when he represented the Australian Joeys in Australia’s first competitive game as a member of the Asian Football Confederation in February of that year. A composed figure along the backline, Strogylos will certainly play a big part for Parramatta FC this season.

Rising Star: Lachlan Tibbles is a rising star between the sticks, and most definitely a player to keep an eye on for the future. Currently an Australian U-17 player and AIS graduate, Tibbles has a wealth of experience at an international level for his age group.

Rockdale City Suns

The Team: Rockdale City Suns performed well above expectation in 2010 in the club’s first season back in top-flight. With Mile Todorovski at the helm, the side proved a thorn for many adversaries in the last campaign. In 2011, expectation at the club is to better last season’s narrow failure to reach the finals and the club has brought in one of the country’s best football coaches to ensure the Suns continue to grow in the Premier League. The experienced Lee Sterrey, formerly at Marconi Stallions, will have a solid group at his disposal in 2011, made up of a pleasant mix of youth and experience. The likes of Mirko Jurilj, Lisandro Berbis, Sash Tirovski, James Monie and Kosta Lagoudakis will fit in nicely with Suns stalwarts Askin Oygur and Peter Apolevski. The experience in this group will certainly assist Sterrey preparing a Championship winning squad

with some exciting talent in the form of Adrian Karakolevski and Steven Veleski joining the Suns. Jason

Naidovski, a powerful striker with huge potential, may well be the answer to the Suns woes in-front of goal last season.

CLUBDIRECTORY

The Coach: Lee Sterrey’s exceptional work ethic and understanding of football stand the Suns in for a really exciting season. Sterrey proved last season at the Stallions that good organisation across the park, with all players playing for the shirt, will provide reward. Sterrey insisted with a group of younger guns, even at times with more experienced players at his disposal, to maintain the development of players coming through the Marconi Club. With this vision, and ability to get the best out of his players, Rockdale City will certainly turn heads in 2011.

Player to watch: The Suns new signing Jason Naidovski has been a great talent in the NSW Premier League, though injuries did slow the striker down in recent seasons. At full fitness, Naidovski’s strength on the ball and exceptional nerve in front of goal will be a welcome signing for the club and its supporters following a frustrating 2010 season in the goals scored department.

Rising Star: Anthony Perri joins the Suns from Sydney Olympic, and despite his young years, is expected to really come of age in 2011. Perri was narrowly pipped for the 2009 Grade 20 NSW Premier League player of the year and has really shown ability on the field since. A composed player with a good engine and equally impressive feet, Perri is a player to look out for in 2011.

South Coast Wolves

The Team: South Coast Wolves enter season 2011 looking at a brighter picture than that of twelve months ago. A new team, new players and a new manager, the side from Wollongong struggled to find their feet in the NSW Premier League competition. Despite the long list of poor results, the Wolves did turn some heads with a strong finish to the campaign, something Coach Trevor Morgan will be looking at as motivation for a strong start in 2011. A number of players have left the club, though with a few experienced names and a number of players from the local Illawarra League injected into the squad, Trevor Morgan is hoping to build on last season’s finish. Mark Picciolini will carry the weight of expectation in the attacking third, with the deadly striker’joining high profile goal poacher Sasho Petrovski in what looks to be a formidable attacking

force. Defensively, the side will be sound with Alex Mansueto and Dave Abel guiding the backline with the addition of Jacob Timpano who returns to Wollongong following a difficult season at Sydney United.

CLUBDIRECTORY The Coach: Arguably one of the best developing coaches in NSW, Trevor Morgan is lining up for his second season in charge of the Wolves. Many positives were taken from last season, despite finishing at the wrong end of the table, Morgan will be out to consolidate his side’s strong finish. With an emphasis also on local players, Morgan will be hoping to make 2011 an unforgettable season for the people of Wollongong.

Player to watch: The return of one of Wollongong’s favourite sons Sasho Petrovski will certainly boost the ranks of not only the South Coast club but the entire NSW Premier League competition. The 36-year-old marksman spent the last seven seasons playing in the Hyundai A-League for the likes of Sydney FC, Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets having racked up well over 100 appearances scoring 41 goals. Petrovski’s experience and eye for goals will push a young South Coast Wolves side to the limit and his presence will certainly be one to watch.

Rising Star: Chris Nathaniel has been an excellent talent for the Wolves over the past twelve months and, still at a young age, has time on his side to continue his development. A very composed figure on the playing field, Nathaniel is constantly improving his physical strength and quickness around the field. Nathaniel will no doubt play a huge role in Tre- vor Morgan’s plans for 2011.

Sutherland Sharks

The Team: Sutherland Sharks’ 2011 objective will be to play finals football come season’s end after narrowly missing the finals series in 2010. The Sharks won the Premiership in 2009, though an indifferent, inconsistent, opening to the 2010 season proved the Sharks undoing despite finishing the regular season strongly. Captained once more by stalwart George Souris, the Sharks will again look to the experienced heads in the pack to guide the side in 2011. Jim Bakis and Nick Stavroulakis will once more be key in midfield, though the latter will be without long-time midfield partner Neil Jablonski who has left the club. Coach Robbie Stanton can also call upon Nick Tsattalios’ energetic performances down the left flank in 2011 – the young winger will certainly add some good value to the Sharks when moving forward. The Sharks side has been built on a strong

base with the inclusions of Matt Bailey and Lachlan Cahill – both players carrying much experience – meanwhile, youngster Huseyin Jasli will be expected to find the back of the net this season along with Michael Svircevic. Seymour Shaw has always been a difficult ground for visitors to pick up points, and the Sharks will

be looking to keep it this way in 2011. CLUBDIRECTORY

The Coach: Sutherland Sharks boss Robbie Stanton has certainly worked wonders at the club since taking over in 2009. A Grand Final win in his first season proved his worth and despite missing out on the finals series in 2010, Stanton proved that he could still produce a competitive side with a relatively thin playing roster. Despite losing some important names such as Neil Jablonski, Ben Spruce and Blake Powell, Stanton has acquired some impressive talent to cover the void. Sutherland will not start the season as favourites, though do not put it past Stanton to get his side into the top-five in 2011.

Player to watch: Chris Price has been a great talent in recent seasons with the club, and his presence in the Sharks line-up this year will add yet another dimension into Sutherland’s game. A energetic workhorse who has pace to burn and has the ability to take on players and provide pinpoint crosses.

Rising Star: Sharks midfielder Misha Hardwick has already proven he has what it takes to play top-flight football in the NSW Premier League. A graduate from the Sutherland Junior program, Hardwick made the most of the opportunities he was given last season with some positive showings. A hard working midfielder with a big heart and energy for the entire team around him, Hardwick promises to be another rising star from the NSW Premier League. www.nswpl.com.au 61

Sydney Olympic

The Team: Much excitement and expectation surrounds Sydney Olympic in 2011 following a rather lean spell in recent years. The Blues have undergone extensive changes in the off season, signalling the club’s intent on returning to the glory days. The Blues welcome back Peter Tsekenis to the club - the former Bankstown City Lions player/coach - returns to the club he represented, and captained in the NSL. A number of Bankstown City players have followed Tsekenis to the club, with Richard Luksic, Bill Tsanidis and Ibrahim Haydar certain to add some steel what has been a cagey Blues defensive line in recent seasons. Moving forward, Tsekenis will be relying heavily on the impact of new recruit David Gullo on either flank. Upfront, despite losing James Monie and Matthew Mayora, the additions of William Angel and Robert Mileski will fit in nicely with a

midfield comprising the likes of Phil Makrys, Anthony Doumanis and Chris Triantis. With much promise of a

Sydney Olympic revival in recent seasons finishing in despair, 2011 could quite possibly be the year of Sydney Olympic with a very impressive playing roster backed up by a very experienced coaching staff.

CLUBDIRECTORY

The Coach: Peter Tsekenis’ appointment as coach carries extra significance for the new Blues boss following his playing days in the ‘blue and white’ shirt. Tsekenis’ experience as both a player and coach stand him in a good position to bring Sydney Olympic back to the glory days, with the addition of some very good talent to the squad already whetting the appetite of Sydney Olympic supporters.

Player to watch: Sydney Olympic’s new signing Robert Mileski will carry much expectation on his shoulders this season. Mileski has proven his worth with Bankstown City as the side’s playmaker in Peter Tsekenis’ previous sides, and 2011 promises to be no different. Mileski’s fine touch of the ball, vision and execution is arguably one of the best in the competition, with the attacking midfielder certain to be part of all Sydney Olympic forward forays.

Rising Star: David Gullo’s exceptional 2010 campaign at Bonnyrigg White Eagles proved the 18-year-old can mix it NSW’s Premier League competition and Sydney Olympic have certainly bought well with the signing of this young talent. Explosive down the left wing with a no-nonsense attitude, Gullo possesses a composed attitude with a touch and left-foot worthy of the A-League. With the likes of Mileski, Phil Makrys and Anthony Doumanis moving the ball around from the middle of the park, Gullo’s attacking presence will have many opponents on the back foot. David Gullo is without a doubt one of the finest young talents in this year’s competition– a player definitely to look out for in 2011. www.nswpl.com.au 65

Sydney United

The Team: The Edensor Park outfit has arguably been one of the most consistent sides in recent seasons with strong cases stated for silverware. Sturdy showings in the regular season culminated with the 2009 Premiers trophy, though the side failed at the final hurdle in both 2009 and 2010 to reach the grand-final, narrowly missing out against Sutherland Sharks and Bonnyrigg White Eagles respectively. Former NSL great and NSWIS coach Jean-Paul De Marigny takes over the coaching reins from the departed . Despite losing the likes of Zdrilic and inspirational defender Joe Vrkic, De Marigny has the services of former Sydney United, Sydney FC and Adelaide United FC defender Mark Rudan. Across the middle of the park, the Bosnar brothers have been re-united with Milan Bosnar returning to the club. Goals should not be an issue for the Reds with

Luka Glavas and Elsid Barkhousir assuming the weight of expectation in the front third, though the likes of

Ante Tomic and new signing Ben Vidaic are sure to assist with terrorising opposing defenders.

CLUBDIRECTORY The Coach: Jean-Paul De Marigny returns to Sydney United for his second stint as coach at the club. De Marigny’s tenacity and pure determination as a footballer has clearly followed him into his coaching career, and the new Reds boss will be after nothing less than a victorious season. De Marigny’s work with the NSW Institute of Sport and the Australian U-17 Joeys most recently, and the experience in the old NSL with Marconi and a stint as Newcastle Jets assistant to Richard Money in 2005, stand ‘JP’ in great stead for a successful run at Sydney United.

Player to watch: Sydney United’s Ante Tomic will gain much attention from the opposition this season after bursting onto the scene in 2009. Played as an attacking midfielder, Tomic possesses the touch, composure and speed for a career at the very highest level. Tomic’s fine showings in 2009 for Sydney United secured the 19-year-old a contract with new A-League franchise Melbourne Heart. Tomic will be looking to consolidate his great work ethic with Sydney United supporters holding high hopes for the gun midfielder in 2011.

Rising Star: The 2008 Grade-20 player of the year, Daniel Rezo, is looking for a big season in 2011 following a horrid 2010 campaign. The youngster secured a spot with the Sydney United first team following a stellar campaign with the Reds Grade-20 side, though a heartbreaking injury saw the midfielder miss the 2010 campaign. With a huge passion for his football, and a love for his club, Daniel Rezo will without a doubt add more variety and determination to De Marigny’s side. www.nswpl.com.au 69
