BPW in South History and Achievements BPW

Established 1952, still going strong, BPW Adelaide advocates for women and develops leadership through building women’s competence, capacity and confidence in their personal and professional arenas.

BPW Adelaide has fostered BPW clubs around South Australia and has a long history of effective advocacy, community leadership and representing working women.

BPW Adelaide is affiliated with BPW Australia and BPW International and its members have served BPW at state, national and international levels. BPW Adelaide

The first BPW club was established in the USA in 1919, and BPW then spread to Europe. BPW International was formed in 1930 and is now established in over 100 countries worldwide.

BPW International works for global gender equality in power and decision-making through our advocacy and UN participation.

The first Australian BPW club was formed in 1925 and in 1947 BPW Australia was established.

BPW Australia takes national action for women equality, at work, on boards, in leadership.

BPW Adelaide was established in 1952 and is still going strong. South Australian BPW Club History Other rural clubs – dates unknown: Mt Gambier, Port Augusta, Riverland, Emu Bay Kangaroo Island.

The Division President represented the South Australian BPW clubs on the BPW Australia Board. In DATE the Division President was replaced by a State Representative when the number of clubs reduced and a formal Division was no longer required.

Federal Parliament Nancy Buttfield Dame Nancy Buttfield DBE was an Australian Liberal Senator and the first woman to serve in the Australian Parliament (1955-1974) as a representative of the state of South Australia.

South Australian Trish White Parliament Patricia Lynne “Trish” White was elected as a Labor politician, representing Taylor from 1994-2010 in the South Australian House of Assembly.

Michelle Lensink Jacqueline Michelle Ann Lensink was elected as a Liberal politician in the South Australian Legislative Council, and was appointed Deputy Liberal Leader in the Legislative Council in 2008. She is Shadow Minister for the Status of Women.

Heather Southcott Heather Southcott was elected to the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Mitcham for the Australian Democrats in 1982. As leader of the Democrats nationally, Heather was the first woman to lead a political party in Australia.

Katrine Hildyard Katrine Hildyard was elected in 2014 as a Labor politician, representing Reynell in the South Australian House of Assembly. In 2015 she was promoted to Assistant Minister to the Premier. She was elected the President of the South Australian Labor Party in October 2015.

BPW Adelaide member Gillian Lewis founded the Adelaide White Ribbon Breakfast Committee in 2008 by bringing women’s organisations together to advocate against DV.

Gillian has been Co-convenor of the Committee since the first breakfast, and Sheila Evans OAM has been a member of the Committee.

Gillian and Sheila were recognised by inclusion on the SA Women’s Honour Roll in 2015. BPW Australia supports and actively promotes personal development; provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience; and lobbies on issues affecting women.

BPW Australia welcomes as members women in paid and voluntary work, including women who used to work and women who aspire to work.

BPW membership includes employers and employees, corporate women and small business women, women in professions and trades, and from the non-profit and government sectors.
