Training Course “New Creative Entrepreneurs” Info pack Some Facts about Albania Albania is located in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders the former Yugoslavia (Serbia- Montenegro) and Kosovo in the north and the east, (FYR of) Macedonia in the east, and Greece in the south. It has access to the Adriatic and Ionian Seas in the west. From the Strait of Otranto, Albania is less than 100 km (60 miles) from Italy. The country covers a total of 28,000 square kilometers (11,000 squared miles). Albanian Hospitality and Culture Albania is an incredibly hospitable culture and has its own particular traditions of courtesy. They are very closely related to the notion of hospitality, a notion similar to that of the sacred guest from Homer and classical literature. The guest is then regaled with the best the family has to offer, usually taking the form of homemade raki, traditional liquor. It is an Albanian tradition to shake hands when meeting one another, and in many cases, they kiss each other on the cheeks, generally four times. One of the most common gesticulation confusions arises from the fact that Albanians nod their heads up and down to mean "no", and shake their heads left to right to indicate "yes". Another specific Albanian gesture that may be confusing to foreigners is when the palm is placed in the chest, it expresses thanks. Albanians are friendly and very open towards foreigners that visit their country. If you are lucky enough to be invited to visit an Albanian's home, you will be treated as royalty. Albanian Climate Albania has a mild, Mediterranean climate. Many visitors will find that it never gets cold in the lowlands. The Ionian Cost, in particular, is very clement; with aver age winter temperatures of 8-10 °C (46-50F).In Tirana and in other inland cities on the plains, temperature sometimes drops below freezing, but this is usually only at night, and it is rare for ice or snow to last more than a day. The country enjoys a good deal of sunny weather, with an average of around 300 sunny days each year. Most of Albania's annual rainfall occurs between late autumn and early spring; outside of the mountainous areas, it is unusual for it to rain in summer. In the summer, visitors often find the inland towns to be quite hot, with July usually being the warmest month. In Tirana, for example, temperatures occasionally reach 40 °C (104F). Many hotels and restaurants have air conditioning. The best places to be in midsummer are on the coast, where sea breezes keep the average temperatures down to a more tolerable 25-30 °C (73-86F), or in the high mountains.

Further copies made in accordance with such instructions may not be made without the written permission of the Author CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The thesis traces the developments in the discourse about Central Europe following the peak of its popularity in the 1980s. First, it overviews the origins and various definitions of the concept. Then, it discusses the 1980s‟ discourse which lays ground for the further analysis. Finally, it examines a selection of essays representative for the post-1989 discourse written by Krzysztof Czyżewski, Péter Esterházy, Aleksander Fiut, Lajos Grendel, Csaba Gy. Kiss, Robert Makłowicz, Andrzej Stasiuk, and László Végel. The analysis is organized around three research questions: how do the authors employ the term of Central Europe, what features they attribute to the region and who do they perceive as significant others of Central Europe. The post-1989 essayism about Central Europe demonstrated several continuities and ruptures in comparison with the discourse of the 1980s.

European National Anthems United Kingdom Europe is one of the seven continents of the world. All the different countries in Europe have their own national anthem. A national anthem can be a fanfare, a hymn, a march or a song. The British national anthem, God Save The Queen, is one of the oldest national anthems, having been performed since 1745. God Save The Queen God save our gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the Queen. • The National Anthems of the European Countries Where Is 'Europe'?
The national anthems of the European countries Where is ‘Europe’? Jan Berting Professor Emeritus of Sociology, Erasmus Universiteit, Rotterdam. Recent publications: Fundamentalisme en democratie. De open samenleving en haar hedendaagse tegenstrevers, 2004, and Europe: a Heritage, a Challenge, a Promise, 2006. Our European national anthems express in very different ways the attachments of the European populations to their countries. Let us have in the first place a look on the central themes that come to the fore in the European anthems. The major themes of the national anthems themes are almost always connected with one or more other themes that play a secondary role or that have an explanatory function. Moreover, the very central role of the Lord in theme 3 see below) is less outspoken under the other themes or is left out altogether. Reading the texts of the European national anthems, it becomes very quickly apparent that the European background of these nations is never mentioned. Their belongingness to ‘Europe’ is perhaps taken for granted? Anyhow, the diversity of these ‘European’ anthems is very great, as is revealed by my analysis. The analysis of the European national anthems reveals that they are in several respects very different. Looking for the major themes that the national anthems express, I found eight different types of national anthems. 1. The anthems of the tiny states of Europe. The diversity of the national anthems starts here (4 cases). 2. The anthems that place in the forefront the beauty of the landscapes of the country to which their native populations belong (7 cases).

  • An Overview of Mehmet Akif Ersoy's Ideal Generation in Âsım
An overview of Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s ideal generation in Âsım MORTAZA FIRUZI UNIVERSITY OF SZEGED Introduction The Renaissance and the Reformation in Europe led to Europeans scientifically and techno- logical superiority over the Ottoman Empire where no reforms had already been introduced in order to avert the European challenge. Moreover, the French revolution in Europe which had nationalism and republicanism alongside with itself, caused the instigation of ethnici- ties of the Ottoman Empire, especially non-Muslims, and made the Ottomans to face a se- ries of domestic and international problems. Although the Ottomans also made some at- tempt to reform their empire in order to solve their problems, it was not enough. Neverthe- less, four different leading ideas, which left its impact on literature as well, for saving the Empire were proposed among the intellectuals of the Ottomans: Ottomanism, Islamism, Turkism, and Westernism. 1 Ottomanism emphasized the unification of various elements within the Empire regard- less their ethnicity and religious identity were supposed to have the equal right. 2 However, the Russian–Ottoman war of 1877–1878, as well as the slaughtering of Muslims in the Bal- kans, and the instigation of Rums and Armenians caused the idea to be rejected and substi- tuted by Islamism. 3 The second leading idea was Islamism, which was supposed to unite all Muslims in the pivot of Islam and create a mighty Empire. The idea was developed in magazines such as Sırat-ı-Müstakim (“The straight path”) and Sebilürre şat (“The way of guidance”). 4 More- over, Mehmet Akif Ersoy is considered as one of the leading scholars in the Islamism ide- ology.

  • The World Factbook Europe :: Macedonia Introduction
The World Factbook Europe :: Macedonia Introduction :: Macedonia Background: Macedonia gained its independence peacefully from Yugoslavia in 1991. Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols delayed international recognition, which occurred under the provisional designation of "the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia." In 1995, Greece lifted a 20-month trade embargo and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, but the issue of the name remained unresolved and negotiations for a solution are ongoing. Since 2004, the US and over 130 other nations have recognized Macedonia by its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia. Ethnic Albanian grievances over perceived political and economic inequities escalated into an insurgency in 2001 that eventually led to the internationally brokered Ohrid Framework Agreement, which ended the fighting and established guidelines for constitutional amendments and the creation of new laws that enhanced the rights of minorities. Although Macedonia became an EU candidate in 2005, the country still faces challenges, including fully implementing the Framework Agreement, improving relations with Bulgaria, carrying out democratic reforms, and stimulating economic growth and development. Macedonia's membership in NATO was blocked by Greece at the Alliance's Summit of Bucharest in 2008.
