In the Year 710 in the Iberian Peninsula, Rodrigo Came to the Throne of the Visigothic Kingdom After Killing the Previous King
2º E In the year 710 in the Iberian Peninsula, Rodrigo came to the throne of the Visigothic Kingdom after killing the previous King. A group of nobles decided to called the muslims for military help to depose Rodrigo. The emir of North Africa, Musa, sent an army of berbers led by Tariq. Then Rodrigo with his own army went to confront the muslims in the Battle of Guadalete. During the battle, some visigothic nobles betrayed Rodrigo and left the battle; because of that Rodrigo died and his army was defeated. After the battle, the muslims continue conquering the Iberian Peninsula, with the help of a powerful army led by the Emir Musa. They reached Toledo and in less than three years they controlled almost the whole of the Iberian Peninsula, except the mountainous areas in the north west. There the muslims found resistance and they fought against the astures, led by Pelayo, in the battle of Covadonga (722). The muslim army was defeated and expelled from the region. The muslims left the zone and advanced to the north, crossing the Pyrinees, but they had to return after being expelled by the Franks (Battle of Poitiers, 732). After that, they returned to the Iberian Peninsula and started to organize their new territories. 2º C In the year 710, the Visigothic Kingdom was suffering a civil war. When the noble Rodrigo was appointed as the King, a minority of visigothic nobles who supported his enemy, Achilla, looked for the military help of the muslims to deposed Rodrigo. The north-african emir Musa sent a berber army lead by Tariq. -

Ritual and ReconstructedMeaning: The Neonian Baptisteryin Ravenna Annabel Jane Wharton The pre-modern work of art, which gained authority through its extension in ritual action, could function as a social integrator. This essay investigates the figural decoration of the Orthodox Baptistery in Ravenna, in an effort to explain certain features of the mosaic program. If the initiation ritual is reenacted and the civic centrality of the rite and its executant, the bishop, is restored, the apparent "icon- ographic mistakes" in the mosaics reveal themselves as signs of the mimetic re- sponsiveness of the icon. By acknowledging their unmediated character, it may be possible to re-empower both pre-modern images and our own interpretative strategy. Byzantine Art and Architecture Thesis The development of early Christian religion had a significant impact on western art after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th century (AD). Through examining various works of art and architecture, it becomes evident that the period of Byzantium marked a significant transition in aesthetic conventions which had a previous focus on Roman elements. As this research entails, the period of Byzantium acted as a link between the periods of Antiquity and the Middle Ages and thus provides insight on the impact of Christianity and its prevalence in art and architecture during this vast historical period. Period of Recognition Part 1 Constantine's Basilicas
The Period of Recognition AD 313—476 Surely one of the most important events in history must be the so called Edict of Milan (313), a concordat really, between Constantine in the 2 Western half of the Empire and his co-emperor in the East, Licinius, that recognized all existing religions in the Roman Empire at the time, most especially Christianity, and extended to all of them the freedom of open, public practice. Equally important, subsequently, was Constantine’s pri- vate, yet imperial, patronage of the Christian church. Also, sixty years later, in 390, the emperor Theodosius would declare Christianity the offi- cial religion of the Roman Empire and followers of the ancient pagan rites, criminals. The pagans were soon subjected to the same repression as Christians had been, save violent widespread persecution. The perse- cuted had become the persecutors . Within another hundred years (in 476) the political Empire in the West would collapse and the Christian church would become the sole unifying cultural force among a collection of bar- barian kingdoms. Christianity would go on to dominate the society of Western Europe for the next thousand years. Thus the three sources from which modern Europe sprang were tapped: Greece, Rome, and Christian- ity. The account of the trial and execution at Smyrna of the Christian bishop Polycarp, first committed to writing in a letter from members of his congregation, became immediately popular as a model of correct behaviour in the face of persecu- tion. It consequently suffered greatly at the hands of unscrupulous ancient ed- itors, causing much scholarly debate about its many intractable problems. To restore the text to its pristine form, therefore, it is not enough to be courageous: a clearly defined sense of what is being looked for is also indispensible, and this is possible only with a thorough knowledge of the text’s transmission and the periods through which it was transmitted—not only their complex intellectual history, but a wide range of literatures, languages, and cultures. Otto Zwier- lein’s two-volume edition of the Martyrium Polycarpi (MPol) and the third-cen- tury Martyrium Pionii (MPion), with extensive discussion of texts and contexts, leaves no doubt that he is one of a very small number of scholars equal to the challenge. -

The 'Rex Fidelissimus' Spanish-French Rivalry in the Reign of Alfonso Xi of Castile
THE ‘REX FIDELISSIMUS’ 93 THE ‘REX FIDELISSIMUS’ SPANISH-FRENCH RIVALRY IN THE REIGN OF ALFONSO XI OF CASTILE (1312–1350) by FRANK TANG (Amsterdam)*,** On the 30th of October 1340 the armies of the Castilian king Alfonso XI (1312– 1350) met the allied forces of the Marinid sultan of Morocco and the emir of Gra- nada on the banks of the river Salado in the deep south of Spain. Alfonso, who was supported by his father-in-law Alfonso IV of Portugal and crusaders from all over Europe, was facing superior numbers. Still, the Christians won the battle and crushed the enemy. According to the Crónica de Alfonso el Onceno, which was probably written by Alfonso’s confidant Fernán Sánchez de Valladolid, the Mus- lims suffered severe losses: 200.000 warriors are said to have been killed. Besides, the Christians captured not only the sultan’s harem, but also an enormous amount of silver and gold. As a result the prices of these precious metals dropped consid- erably in places as far away as Paris1. The number of Muslim victims (against on- ly twenty dead knights on Christian side!) is, of course, highly exaggerated. That does not alter the fact that the Battle of Salado is celebrated as one of the great Christian victories of the Reconquest, which had started over 600 years before with the legendary Battle of Covadonga and would be completed 152 years lat- er, when the Catholic Kings Fernando and Isabel took Granada. The danger of an invasion from Africa had been averted once and for all, especially when Alfonso secured Castilian control of the European side of the Straits of Gibraltar by con- quering Algeciras at the end of a long siege in 1344. -
