Historically fascinating...By Paul V. BeyerlAs someone from the same era but in a different part of the country, but dealing with many of the same issues, very interesting book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read for those interested in modern Pagan, Wiccan and Gay history!By Jonathan NightshadeThis is one of the most interesting books that I have read in years. It is primarily the biography of Eddie Buczynski, the gay founder of a number of modern Wiccan traditions. But it is much, much more. It also concurrently documents both the modern gay rights movement as it follows Ed Buczynski's life as a young gay man in the New York area during the 1970's and 1980's, as well as the growth of the Wiccan religion in the US during this timeframe. For Wiccans, Witches and Pagans, this is a treasure trove of historical facts and long hidden Craft history. Michael Lloyd has opened up a trunk full of informational gems, which he offers to the reader in an entertaining fashion. For older Crafters, this book will reignite memories of the passion, as well as the drama, that was part of the early Pagan/Craft movement. For younger Wiccans and Pagans, this will provide a historical background to their own current search. If you are at all interested in - The importance of occult stores in the modern pagan movement, the birth of gay friendly traditions of Witchcraft and Paganism, inside information on the witch wars of the era, the true story behind the Simon Necronomicon, history pertaining to the Gardnerian tradition of the Craft, the story of The Pagan Way organization, the history of Thelema The OTO in the New York area, where the information contained in the Magickal Formulary of occult oils derived from, info on the rebel gay witch Dr. Leo Martello, then you must read this book. Michael Lloyd is to be sincerely thanked for traveling the country and gathering firsthand information for almost 9 years to put together this 700 page volume, and presenting the information in an intelligent and readable fashion.9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. No Rest for the WiccaBy Steven Posch*Bull of Heaven* is the single most important work of modern pagan historiography since Hutton's *Triumph of the Moon*. Lloyd tells the story of Minoan Brotherhood founder Eddie Buczynski with clarity, panache, and a wry sense of humor, but the book is more than a biography of an individual: it is, in a very real sense, the first biography of a local pagan community. More: Lloyd scrupulously documents the centrality of gay men to the creation of a modern American paganism. Lloyd beautifully captures the excitement, the ferment, and the sense of endless possibility that characterized the age. Old-timers will be filled with nostalgia; for new-comers, this book will provide a fascinating window into the witch wars, the larger-than-life personalities, and the dueling-egos politics of the period. *Bull of Heaven* is a loving tribute, generous (sometimes overly so) but never hagiographic, to one of the founders of the modern pagan community. Winner of three Golden Broomstick Awards: Best Pagan History of the Year, Best Witch-Book Title of the Year, and Best Witch-Book Cover Design of the Year. Highly recommended. As a teenager, Eddie Buczynski had dreamed of becoming a Jesuit Priest. Rejected by the Church because of his questioning mind and budding homosexuality, his feet were soon set on a different path-one that would lead from his childhood home in Ozone Park to the raucous streets of '60s Greenwich Village, through the burgeoning Neo-Pagan spiritual movement of the '70s, before depositing him into the academic realm of Classical Near Eastern archaeology. Bringing together the threads of disparate subcultures, social movements, spiritual paths and characters, "Bull of Heaven" weaves Buczynski's life into a tapestry that encompasses the history of contemporary Paganism and the occult in New York City. And in so doing, it offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of GLBT men and women whose heretofore untold contributions helped to shape the face of contemporary Paganism. Part biography, part history, Bull of Heaven shines a spotlight on that rarest of beasts-a previously unstudied slice of New York City history.
