Without guidance, this is usually impossible. Therefore, lowe my biggest thanks to Peter and Laura Yorke of Ra Horakhty Temple, who provided my first exposure to self-initiation techniques in the Golden Dawn. Their years of expe rience with the Golden Dawn material yielded a structure of carefully selected ex ercises, which their students still use today to bring about a gradual transformation. WIthout such well-prescribed use of the Golden Dawn's techniques, it would have been difficult to make progress in its grade system. The basic structure of the course in this book is built on a foundation of the Golden Dawn's elemental grade system as my teachers passed it on. In particular, it develops further their choice to use the color correspondences of the Four Worlds, a piece of the original Golden Dawn system that very few occultists have recognized as an ini tiatory tool. -

Wicca Wicca is the term most commonly employed to describe the largest and best-known contemporary Pagan religion. The foundational premise from which Wicca emerged is the (since discredited) witch-cult hypothesis, the idea that the witch trials of early modern Christendom were an attempt not to combat a cabal of devil-worshippers but to eliminate a pre-Christian fertility religion popular among Europe’s peasantry. This theory had developed among nineteenth-century scholars, but only reached widespread attention when it was propagated by the Egyptologist Margaret Murray (1863–1963) in the 1920s and 1930s. When Wicca publicly appeared in the 1950s, its adherents claimed that it was the survival of this witch-cult and that its lineage stretched back into deep prehistory. Although most historians specialising in the early modern witch trials had already expressed reservations about the theory, it would only be firmly demolished by more intensive research during the 1960s and 1970s. By that time, however, the theory had entrenched itself in the popular imagination, particularly within sectors of the occult milieu (Hutton 1999, 132–150). The man often credited with establishing Wicca was Gerald Gardner (1884–1964), an upper middle-class, politically conservative Englishman who had spent much of his life in Southern and Eastern Asia. On retirement in 1936 he returned with his wife to Southern England, settling near the New Forest and joining an esoteric group called the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship. -

This is a result of the simple fact that our knowledge of the practice of Mesopotamian magic is channeled mainly through the medium of text. 2 Assuming a written representation serves as a record of an existing ritual practice, it must be approached as a selective account of specific aspects of a ritual, which were deemed necessary to be written down, in a specific time, place and context.3 In addition, we cannot assume that a ritual text4 or written recitation merely records a practice which existed before it was written down; the action or recitation may have been composed initially in writing, by means of a combination of observation and writing, or with reference to an oral tradition. Following the initial writing of an incantation or ritual text, the composition represented by the text may have been transmitted in writing and/or orally. Similarly, the composition may have been performed with a full or partial reference to a text, a version of it, or as a purely or partially oral tradition. -

LELAND Mayara Carrobrez (UEM /PROBIC /UNICESUMAR) Silvio Ruiz Paradiso ( co-autor UNICESUMAR /USP ) Nossa proposta consiste em analisar as relações de gênero presentes na fonte bibliográfica Aradia , Il Vangelo Delle Streghe (1899) escrita pelo folclorista americano Charles G. Leland. O livro, escrito a partir da junção de um manuscrito de origem semierudita que circulava em Florença, na Itália do século XIX, com estudos do autor a respeito do folclore, lendas locais, conjurações e feitiços, narra a história de Aradia, o messias feminino enviado a terra por Diana para salvar os pobres, oprimidos, pagãos e mulheres dos opressores cristãos. O viés político da obra justifica-se pelo posicionamento anarquista do autor. Nota-se, características anticlericais, resultado da influência recebida do historiador Jules Michelet. O protagonismo de Diana e Aradia enquanto Deusas é reforçado como característica de um culto pagão centrado na natureza e na mulher, contrastando o cristianismo patriarcal, claramente criticado no livro. Sendo assim, problematizaremos o protagonismo feminino presente na obra, dialogando com Magliocco (2004) e Terzetti-Filho (2012) para estruturar e sustentar nossas análises. Aradia não era o primeiro nem último livro do autor, mas tornou-se o mais conhecido dentre os 55 títulos escritos por Leland. Dentre os principais motivos, podemos citar a Wicca, criada por Gerald Gardner, na Inglaterra, no final da década de 1940. Gardner incorporou elementos de Aradia e outras fontes para dar início ao que podemos chamar de bruxaria moderna. -
