Biographical Note Philip Emmons Isaac Bonewits (1949–2010) was a writer, lecturer, and liturgist with considerable influence on the American Neopagan and Earth religion movements of the late 20th century. Bonewits first became involved with Neopaganism while an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, where he joined the Reformed Druids of North America. He went on to become the University of California's first—and, to date, only—graduate to receive a degree in magic. Bonewits published his first book, Real Magic, shortly after graduation, quickly establishing himself as a leader in the Neopagan community. He eventually founded the Neopagan Druidic group Ár nDraíocht Féin: A Druid Fellowship, which is still functioning. Bonewits was a member of the Aquarian Anti-Defamation League. and wrote extensively about the history of modern pagan witchcraft, much of which is unpublished. In the course of his research and writing career, he collected correspondence from many notable figures in the movement. Scope and Content Subject files, manuscripts, correspondence, notebooks, photographs and ephemera of Isaac Bonewits (1949–2010), writer, lecturer, and liturgist with considerable influence on the American Neopagan and Earth religion movements of the late 20th century. • Handbook of Religious Beliefs and Practices
STATE OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES 1987 FIRST REVISION 1995 SECOND REVISION 2004 THIRD REVISION 2011 FOURTH REVISION 2012 FIFTH REVISION 2013 HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES INTRODUCTION The Department of Corrections acknowledges the inherent and constitutionally protected rights of incarcerated offenders to believe, express and exercise the religion of their choice. It is our intention that religious programs will promote positive values and moral practices to foster healthy relationships, especially within the families of those under our jurisdiction and within the communities to which they are returning. As a Department, we commit to providing religious as well as cultural opportunities for offenders within available resources, while maintaining facility security, safety, health and orderly operations. The Department will not endorse any religious faith or cultural group, but we will ensure that religious programming is consistent with the provisions of federal and state statutes, and will work hard with the Religious, Cultural and Faith Communities to ensure that the needs of the incarcerated community are fairly met. This desk manual has been prepared for use by chaplains, administrators and other staff of the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study of all religions. It does provide a brief background of most religions having participants housed in Washington prisons. This manual is intended to provide general guidelines, and define practice and procedure for Washington State Department of Corrections institutions. It is intended to be used in conjunction with Department policy. While it does not confer theological expertise, it will, provide correctional workers with the information necessary to respond too many of the religious concerns commonly encountered.

  • Wicca” Forthcoming In: E
    E. Doyle White, “Wicca” Forthcoming in: E. Asprem (ed.), Dictionary of Contemporary Esotericism Preprint manuscript of: E. Doyle White, “Wicca”, Dictionary of Contemporary Esotericism (ed. E. Asprem), Leiden: Brill. Archived at ContERN Repository for Self-Archiving (CRESARCH) https://contern.org/cresarch/cresarch-repository/ Aug. 13, 2018. Wicca Wicca is the term most commonly employed to describe the largest and best-known contemporary Pagan religion. The foundational premise from which Wicca emerged is the (since discredited) witch-cult hypothesis, the idea that the witch trials of early modern Christendom were an attempt not to combat a cabal of devil-worshippers but to eliminate a pre-Christian fertility religion popular among Europe’s peasantry. This theory had developed among nineteenth-century scholars, but only reached widespread attention when it was propagated by the Egyptologist Margaret Murray (1863–1963) in the 1920s and 1930s. When Wicca publicly appeared in the 1950s, its adherents claimed that it was the survival of this witch-cult and that its lineage stretched back into deep prehistory. Although most historians specialising in the early modern witch trials had already expressed reservations about the theory, it would only be firmly demolished by more intensive research during the 1960s and 1970s. By that time, however, the theory had entrenched itself in the popular imagination, particularly within sectors of the occult milieu (Hutton 1999, 132–150). The man often credited with establishing Wicca was Gerald Gardner (1884–1964), an upper middle-class, politically conservative Englishman who had spent much of his life in Southern and Eastern Asia. On retirement in 1936 he returned with his wife to Southern England, settling near the New Forest and joining an esoteric group called the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship.

The Falling Dream: Unreason and Enchantment in the Gay Liberation Movement A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Abram J. Lewis IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Regina Kunzel, adviser; Roderick Ferguson, co-adviser July 2015 © Abram J. Lewis 2015 Acknowledgements Completing a PhD is a colossal undertaking that highlights the ineluctably social character of knowledge production. This dissertation could not have been possible without the generosity of many, both within and beyond my academic life. I am grateful to everyone who invested their knowledge, labor, patience, and support in this project over the last several years. These remarks will not do justice to those contributions, but I will nonetheless attempt to confer some recognition here. This dissertation is the product of an exceptionally committed and insightful committee. Kevin Murphy has effectively served as my third advisor throughout my graduate career: Kevin has provided feedback on innumerable seminar papers, funding proposals, job applications, and publication materials. Beyond scholarly feedback, Kevin has been integral to my attempts to figure out how to “do” academia. Roderick Ferguson has remained a generous, engaged, and at times, especially challenging reader, for which I feel particularly fortunate. It has been exciting to have Rod as a co-advisor as our current projects have brought us into overlapping historical and theoretical loops of flight. I am thankful to have retained Rod as an interlocutor, even as our professional trajectories drew us to Chicago and New York City respectively. Jean Langford was a serendipitous addition to a committee otherwise populated by Americanists associated with gender and sexuality studies.

  • O Protagonismo Feminino Na Obra Aradia, Il Vangelo Delle Streghe (1899) De Charles G

Green Book Of Meditations Volume Ten Research Resources On Druidism 2003 Introduction Originally this was going to be the bulk of ARDA 2’s Part Seven Miscellany, but due to some copyright concerns and the general wholeness of the subject matter, it seem that a Green Book was possible out of the material. Much of material of Section Two is from ARDA 1’s Part Eight, and much from ARDA 1’s Part Seven is now here in Section Three and Four. This section will naturally expand over the years, so it’s a good idea to separate it from the main body text of ARDA 2. I don’t wish you to misinterpret this book as if for me to say that you have to be fascinated and obsessed with Celtic research to understand Druidism. That’s not what I mean. Yes, I’ve studied the old ones, but I think there is more than can be learned form living plants and animals and each other than from the few remaining scraps. However, it’s still good and interesting to know, even if not practiced. I hope you enjoy it, and have fruitful research. Yours in the Mother, Mike Scharding March 20, 2003 Embassy of Japan, D.C. • Michael Stevens' the Road to Interzone
“The scholarship surrounding the life and work of William Burroughs is in the midst of a renaissance. Students of Burroughs are turning away from myths, legends, and sensationalistic biographical detail in order to delve deeply into textual analysis, archival research, and explorations of literary and artistic history. Michael Stevens’ The Road to Interzone is an important part of this changing landscape. In a manner similar to Ralph Maud’s Charles Olson’s Reading, The Road to Interzone places the life and literature of “el Hombre Invisible” into sharper focus by listing and commenting on, in obsessive detail, the breadth of literary material Burroughs read, referred to, researched, and reviewed. Stevens reveals Burroughs to be a man of letters and of great learning, while simultaneously shedding light on the personal obsessions, pet theories, childhood favorites, and guilty pleasures, which make Burroughs such a unique and fascinating figure. Stevens’ book provides a wealth of new and important information for those deeply interested in Burroughs and will no doubt prove essential to future scholarship. Like Oliver Harris’ The Secret of Fascination and Robert Sobieszek’s Ports of Entry before it, The Road to Interzone is an indispensable addition to the canon of Burroughs Studies.” -Jed Birmingham “Michael Stevens has created a new kind of biography out of love for William S. Burroughs and love of books. Author worship and bibliophilia become one at the point of obsession, which of course is the point where they become interesting. Burroughs’ reading was intense and far flung, and Stevens has sleuthed out a portrait of that reading--the books Burroughs lent his name to in the form of introductions and blurbs, the books in his various libraries, the books he refers to, the books that found their way into his writing, and much more! Along with lively notes from Stevens, we have Burroughs throughout--his opinions, perceptions, the ‘grain of his voice.’ That in itself makes Stevens’ book a notable achievement.
