I would also like to thank all my relatives, friends, and colleagues who supported me throughout this endeavour. iii © University of Pretoria Abstract Critics such as Elizabeth Napier and Lorraine Sim explore some aspects of space and borders in their discussions of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, presumably to demonstrate that the novel is a representative nineteenth-century text that depicts and comments on fundamentally nineteenth-century debates and concerns. However, the existing critical work on Brontë’s novel does not include analyses that incorporate spatial theories such as those of Henri Lefebvre, Edward Soja, Michel Foucault, and Henk van Houtum in their discussion of Brontë’s narrative as a seminal nineteenth-century work of fiction. These spatial theories maintain that those who occupy positions of power in society shape and remodel the spaces and borders in which society exists and of which it consists, and impose these constructs on the other members of society to ensure social order and to safeguard their own position of authority within the structure of society. -

MCPHAIL-EDWARDS, MARY HANNAH Mary Hannah McPhail-Edwards Age: 16, Grade: 12 School Name: Calera High School, Calera, AL Educator: Lee Ann McPhail Category: Critical Essay Man As Monster: Heathcliff and His Legacy Man as Monster: Heathcliff and His Legacy I first read Wuthering Heights at a relatively young age. In this idyllic first reading, I viewed Heathcliff as Catherine did in the immaturity of her youth: as a faultless, godlike creature, his company vastly preferable to any other male of the species. In later readings, my opinions changed; I rebelled against instinctive romanticism, protesting to anyone who would listen my disgust that entire generations had been fooled by a misogynistic, abusive paragon of vice. I alone saw the truth! But to my chagrin, I still found myself drawn to the perfect intensity of a character more beast than man, filled with original sin and uncontestable charm. At present, I have learned to accept Heathcliff as I have many other characters of fiction and reality: as a flawed human being who could no more be put on a pedestal than drawn and quartered as an unforgivable heathen. I love to read about him because he is more human than a true human, in all the definitions of the word, and so is more familiar than anyone I have ever known. Even within the literary canon, Heathcliff reaches the status of an urban legend within his lifetime. It is dangerous to know him, to befriend him, or even to live in the same general area as him. His vengeful rage seems to spill over onto people entirely unconcerned with the events of his life; one of the best examples of this is when he manipulates Isabella Linton into eloping with him, attempting to hang her dog with a handkerchief in the process. -
