(Frans Kellendonk, 1987) K Het godsbeleven kan twee wegen gaan, zoals Rudolf Otto betoogde: de weg van de Einheitsschau en die van de Innenschau. In het eerste geval schouwt de mens in de veelheid van deze wereld het Ene; in het tweede geval werpt hij het peillood in zichzelf uit om de Grond der dingen te vinden. Hij is zeer zeker een geeste- lijk zoeker, maar op de tweede weg laat hij ook de eigen bewuste geest achter zich. In de extase bereikt hij de eenheid met de kwaliteitsloze God. De God, die de godszoeker leert kennen, is zó geestelijk, dat Hij alleen door verijlde ter- men, zoals ‘de woestijn’, ‘de stilte’, ‘de eenzaamheid’ kan worden omschreven en dat Scotus Eriugena (810-877) zeer paradoxaal kon zeggen: God heeft de schepping uit zichzelf voortgebracht, want Hij is het Niets, dat is: de onuitspreke- lijke, onbegrijpelijke en ongenaakbare luister van het goddelijk wezen. Hij is niet en was niet en zal niet zijn, omdat Hij meer is dan Zijn. (De divisione naturae 3, 18-19). (Claas Bleeker, 1952) K De mens die zichzelf vindt, vindt God als die hem oordeelt, vindt eigen crea- tuurlijkheid, eigen nietigheid, eigen zonde. In zijn conscienta (geweten) hoort hij de stem Gods, in zijn bewustzijn vindt hij het medeweten van het Volstrekt Andere. Nog beter spreken wij de religieuze taal, wanneer wij het omkeren: de mens die God ontdekt, ontdekt zichzelf. Met diepe eerbied gedenken wij Rudolf Otto, die ons leerde deze dingen weer te begrijpen. Hoeveel ook én op het terrein der godsdienstgeschiedenis én op dat der methodologie en psycho- logie veranderd moge zijn, het werk van Otto zal zijn fundamentele betekenis nog zeer lang behouden want Het heilige heeft zijn plaats gevonden en een invloed verworven die verre uitreikt boven theologie en godsdienstwetenschap. (Gerardus van der Leeuw, 1937) Er moet nog veel werk worden verricht, voordat het psychiatrische begrip ziekte, het juridische begrip schuld en het theologisch begrip zonde in een nieuw gevormd brandpunt één en ondeelbaar zullen samenkomen. Maar belet ons niet de god te aanbidden die in u aanwezig zal zijn. Friedrich Schleiermacher 10 voorwoord Terwijl in de ons omringende landen de ene na de andere druk verscheen van Rudolf Otto’s boek Het heilige, bleef het in Nederland bij twee drukken. In 1928 verscheen de ver taling van de Aaltense predikant Johannes Dippel. Dr. Oene Noordenbos heeft deze vertaling herzien en Paul Brand bracht in 1963 de herdruk uit.

    A Phenomenological Critique of the Idea of Social Science Jonathan D. F. Tuckett 17/11/2014 Submitted for the Degree of Ph.D. in Religious Studies School of Literature and Languages Religion University of Stirling Abstract Social science is in crisis. The task of social science is to study “man in situation”: to understand the world as it is for “man”. This thesis charges that this crisis consists in a failure to properly address the philosophical anthropological question “What is man?”. The various social scientific methodologies who have as their object “man” suffer rampant disagreements because they presuppose, rather than consider, what is meant by “man”. It is our intention to show that the root of the crisis is that social science can provide no formal definition of “man”. In order to understand this we propose a phenomenological analysis into the essence of social science. This phenomenological approach will give us reason to abandon the (sexist) word “man” and instead we will speak of wer: the beings which we are. That we have not used the more usual “human being” (or some equivalent) is due to the human prejudice which is one of the major constituents of this crisis we seek to analyse. This thesis is divided into two Parts: normative and evaluative. In the normative Part we will seek a clarification of both “phenomenology” and “social science”. Due to the various ways in which “phenomenology” has been invented we must secure a simipliciter definition of phenomenology as an approach to philosophical anthropology (Chapter 2). Importantly, we will show how the key instigators of the branches of phenomenology, Husserl, Scheler, Heidegger, and Sartre, were all engaged in this task.

    A Study on Religion Religious studies is the academic field of multi-disciplinary, secular study of religious beliefs, behaviors, and institutions. It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasizing systematic, historically based, and cross-cultural perspectives. While theology attempts to understand the nature of transcendent or supernatural forces (such as deities), religious studies tries to study religious behavior and belief from outside any particular religious viewpoint. Religious studies draws upon multiple disciplines and their methodologies including anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and history of religion. Religious studies originated in the nineteenth century, when scholarly and historical analysis of the Bible had flourished, and Hindu and Buddhist texts were first being translated into European languages. Early influential scholars included Friedrich Max Müller, in England, and Cornelius P. Tiele, in the Netherlands. Today religious studies is practiced by scholars worldwide. In its early years, it was known as Comparative Religion or the Science of Religion and, in the USA, there are those who today also know the field as the History of religion (associated with methodological traditions traced to the University of Chicago in general, and in particular Mircea Eliade, from the late 1950s through to the late 1980s). The field is known as Religionswissenschaft in Germany and Sciences de la religion in the French-speaking world. The term "religion" originated from the Latin noun "religio", that was nominalized from one of three verbs: "relegere" (to turn to constantly/observe conscientiously); "religare" (to bind oneself [back]); and "reeligare" (to choose again).[1] Because of these three different meanings, an etymological analysis alone does not resolve the ambiguity of defining religion, since each verb points to a different understanding of what religion is.[2] During the Medieval Period, the term "religious" was used as a noun to describe someone who had joined a monastic order (a "religious").

Bohm is recognized as one of the most brilliant physicists of his gen- eration. He is famous for his ‘hidden variables’ interpretation of quantum mechanics. Bohm wrote extensively on philosophical and psychological subjects. In his celebrated book Wholeness and the Implicate Order (1882) he introduced the influential ideas of the Explicate and the Implicate orders that are at the core of his process philosophy. Bohm was also a very close disciple of the Indian teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), whom he recognized to have had an important influence on his thought. Chapter 1 is a general explanation of what I intend to do, why my re- search is filling an important gap, introduce the field of Western esoteri- cism as a scholarly subject and suggesting that it offers a fruitful way of approaching the thought of David Bohm.

  • Phenomenology of Religion
    PHENOMENOLOGY OF RELIGION. Philosophical phenomenology is one of the major twentiethcentury philosophies, and the phenomenology of religion is one of the major approaches within religious studies. Although the phenomenology of religion emerges as both a major field of study and an extremely influential approach to religion, formulating an essay on this subject poses serious difficulties. The term has become very popular and is used by numerous scholars who share little if anything in common. USES OF THE TERM. For the sake of organization, it is possible to differentiate four major groups of scholars who use the term phenomenology of religion. First, there are works in which phenomenology of religion is used in the vaguest, broadest,and most uncritical of ways. Often the term seems to mean nothing more than an investigation of the phenomena of religion. Second, from the Dutch scholar P. D. Chantepie de la Saussaye (1848–1920) to such contemporary scholars as the Scandinavian historians of religions Geo Widengren (1907–1996) and A˚ ke Hultkrantz (b. 1920), phenomenology of religion means the comparative study and the classification of different types of religious phenomena. There is little if any regard for specific phenomenological concepts, methods, or procedures of verification. Third, numerous scholars, such as W. Brede Kristensen (1867–1953), Gerardus van der Leeuw (1890–1950), Joachim Wach (1898–1955), C. Jouco Bleeker (1898–1983), Mircea Eliade (1907–1986), and Jacques Waardenburg (b. 1935), identify the phenomenology of religion as a specific branch, discipline, or method within Religionswissenschaft. This is where the most significant contributions of the phenomenology of religion to the study of religion have been made.

    On the Function of the Epoche in Phenomenological Interpretations of Religion SAMUEL MICKEY In attempting to interpret sacred phenomena, a problem arises: whatever is held to be sacred is not readily given, that is, it is not accessible in the way that an everyday phenomenon is. In terms often adapted and adopted from Rudolf Otto, “the sacred” ( das Heilige ) is “wholly other” ( ganz andere )—ineffable, mysterious, and completely different from normal reality (Otto 25-30). The sacred is not an everyday object or concern, but is rather an “ultimate concern”—a concern that Paul Tillich described as the defining characteristic of faith (Tillich 12-16). Furthermore, what one person holds sacred may not be given as such to another person, which is to say, there seems to be no single phenomenon (whether a place, myth, belief, ritual or person, etc.) that everybody considers sacred. Accordingly, a rigorous description of that which is considered sacred must account for the difficulty of speaking about various ways in which others experience that which is wholly other . In what follows, I argue that the restraint or “bracketing” that characterizes the phenomenological epoche can facilitate an understanding of the radical alterity of the sacred and of the others who experience the sacred.
