Atkins, Chair Davinder L. Bhowmik Tani E. Barlow Kyoko Tokuno Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of Asian Languages and Literature 3 University of Washington Abstract Hyperfemininities, Hypermasculinities, and Hypersexualities in Classical Japanese Literature Sachi Schmidt-Hori Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Paul S. Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power. -

What did he leave behind? My original hypothesis was that Sihanouk was a libertine and ruthless god-king who had immense pride for his country. -
Algumas Reflexões Sobre Os Quadrinhos Femininos Japoneses No Século Xx
89 ABSTRACT: Comics are one of the products of the industrial revolution and the mass literacy from the end of the XIX century. Published in newspapers or magazines, they reach the hands of the most diverse public. In Japan it was not different, but the comic market has developed in a segmented manner by sex, age and even themes, working as technologies of gender, helping to constitute what is male and female within the society. In our article, we discuss, using as theoretical support the feminist reflections, how the comics for girls, known as shoujo manga, have developed over the twentieth century and the impact produced by the entry of an increasing number of women in the manga market, permitting that an entire comic book demography could be thought of as a product from women and for women. -

The Barbie Phenomenon in Japan
THE BARBIE PHENOMENON IN JAPAN Arisa Shibagaki A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2007 Committee: Marilyn F. Motz, Advisor Esther Clinton © 2007 Arisa Shibagaki All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Marilyn F. Motz, Advisor This research examines the popularity of Barbie among young adult Japanese women as the “Barbie phenomenon” in Japan. By investigating the historical and cultural aspects of Japanese values of beauty, the author found that the phenomenon emerged from the combination of the values of kawaii (Japanese cuteness) and kakkoii (Japanese coolness). Kawaii is the traditional positive feeling for small and delicate things, and in modern society its meaning extends into popular characters and fashion. Kawaii fashion is usually considered to use lace, ribbon, and frilly materials and colors of pink, white, and pastels. On the other hand, the English- language word “cool” is usually translated into kakkoii (かっこいい), which means that people’s appearance is attractive, and its meaning also extends into people’s behavior and fashion in modern society. Kakkoii behavior is masculine and independent; the colors of black, blue, and khaki and plain materials are usually used in kakkoii fashion. In fact, “Kakkoii” is different from American “cool,” which is a word used for not only an attractive appearance but also individuality and a sense of belonging; however, the words “kakkoii” and “cool” are used without regard for such a difference in Japan. In women’s fashion magazines, both “kawaii” and “cool” are the common key words. -
