I wish to acknowledge the presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Joseph Absi, as well as the many other prelates and dignitaries here this evening. I thank the Right Reverend Philip Raczka, Cathedral Rector and Vicar General, for his hospitality. In a special way, I greet my brother, Bishop Nicholas Samra, and express to him the spiritual closeness, paternal affection, and heartfelt congratulations on this occasion in your life and priestly ministry – the celebration of thirty years of episcopal ministry and fifty years of priestly service! Your Excellency, fifty years ago, you were ordained as a priest and anointed with the oil of gladness, committing yourself wholeheartedly to the service of the People of God, promising to offer sacrifice to God for them. Twenty years later, you received the fullness of Holy Orders, deepening your commitment to pasture Christ’s sheep. You certainly have taken that commitment seriously. Indeed, as priests and bishops, our whole life is an oblation to God and a constant striving to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd. Pope Francis has said: “The Heart of the Good Shepherd is not only the Heart that shows us mercy, but it is itself mercy. -

The changes that occurred in the 1960s indicated that exercising the right of patronage, based on the principles out- lined in the Constitution, was impossible, and the peaceful establishment of the principles of bilateral relations could only be indicated through an inter- national agreement. The Concordat signed by Argentina in 1966 removed the national patronage, but the changes to the content of the Constitution were introduced only in 1994. The aim of the study is to show the concordat agreement concluded in 1966 by Argentina with the Holy See as an exam- ple of an international agreement. The main focus is the presentation of concordat standards for the institution of patronage. Due to the subject and purpose of the study, the work uses methods typical of social sciences in the legal science discipline. The dogmatic-legal method is the basis for consideration of the Concordat as a source of Argentine law, and as an aux- iliary method, the historical-legal method was used to show the historical background of the presented issue. -

TREATY BETWEEN THE HOLY SEE AND ITALY IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY Whereas: The Holy See and Italy have recognized the desirability of eliminating every existing reason for dissension between them by arriving at a definitive settlement of their reciprocal relations, one which is consistent with justice and with the dignity of the two Parties and which, by assuring to the Holy See in a permanent manner a position in fact and in law which guarantees it absolute independence for the fulfilment of its exalted mission in the world, permits the Holy See to consider as finally and irrevocably settled the “Roman Question”, which arose in 1870 by the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy under the Dynasty of the House of Savoy; Since, in order to assure the absolute and visible independence of the Holy See, it is required that it be guaranteed an indisputable sovereignty even in the international realm, it has been found necessary to create under special conditions Vatican City, recognizing the full ownership and the exclusive and absolute power and sovereign jurisdiction of the Holy See over the same; His Holiness the Supreme Pontiff Pius XI and His Majesty Victor Emanuel III King of Italy have agreed to conclude a Treaty, appointing for that purpose two Plenipotentiaries, namely, on behalf of His Holiness, His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Gasparri, his Secretary of State, and on behalf of His Majesty, His Excellency Sir Benito Mussolini, Prime Minister and Head of Government; which persons, having exchanged their respective full powers, which were found to be in due and proper form, have agreed upon the following articles: Art. -
Papal Blessing Application Procedure
Papal Blessing Application Procedure The Diocese of Kalamazoo does not issue Papal Blessings. Instead, requests for a Papal Blessing are handled by the Apostolic Nunciature (the embassy of the Holy See to the United States). Requests to receive a Papal Blessing in the form of a printed certificate should be placed in a letter (see sample letter on following page) and addressed to: Most Reverend Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio Apostolic Nunciature United States of America 3339 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20008-3687 Enclose the following with your request: (1) A written recommendation from a parish priest of the person(s) to receive the blessing, or from a priest familiar with the person(s), attesting to his/her/their good standing in the Catholic Church. In the case of a wedding, both parties should be Catholics. (see sample letter on following page) (2) A letter with the the contents of the blessing, clearly printed, including: a. The name(s) (typed or written in capital letters) of the people to receive the blessing b. The occasion to be celebrated (birthday, wedding, ordination, wedding anniversary, etc.) Anniversaries should be of a special nature, such as 25th, 50th, 60th. Birthdays should also be special, such as 80th or 90th and so on. c. The date of the occasion. d. If a wedding, the name of the church and its city and state. (3) An offering of $20.00, by check or money order, made payable to the “Apostolic Nunciature.” Please indicate the address to which the document should be sent, as well as the Diocese to which the persons to receive the blessing belong. -

The philosopher Jacques Maritain developed his political philosophy thoroughly informed by his deep Catholic faith. His philosophy places the human person at the center of every action. In developing his political thought, he enumerates two principal tasks of the state as (1) to establish and preserve order, and as such, guarantee justice, and (2) to promote the common good. The state has such duties to the people because it receives its authority from the people. The people possess natural, God-given right of self-government, the exercise of which they voluntarily invest in the state. -

Is this curial adage – with which in the past Concordats were criticized as mutual concessions of privileges between Church and State – still relevant today? Drawing on a question of a prominent member of the Italian Con- stituent Assembly, Giuseppe Dossetti (who was also a canon lawyer): are Concordats a ‘bad deal for the Church’? In order to answer, I would preliminarily clarify that Concordats are in- ternational treaties between two entities, the State and the Catholic Church, both sovereign in their own domain respectively, the temporal and the spir- itual one. They are just tools, in themselves they are neither good nor bad. They become good or bad depending on their contents. It would be interesting to retrace the historical development of Con- cordats in order to detect whether and how they have guaranteed freedom of religion in its three aspects, institutional, collective and individual. We could start with an initial arrangement (basically a concordat) still under emperor Commodus in Roman times, which allows a temporary cessation of persecution against Christians, to find that it guarantees religious freedom as a minimum existential level: the freedom to live as Christians. Or, for a formal agreement to ensure the libertas Ecclesiae, we refer to the Concordat of Worms (1122), which in the Middle Ages ended the Investiture Contro- versy, freeing the Church from the power of the Princes. -

UNITED STATES-VATICAN RECOGNITION: BACKGROUND AND ISSUESt SAMUEL W. BETTWY* "A lawyer without history or literature is a mechanic . .;[with] some knowledge of these .. .an architect."' In world affairs, the Roman Catholic Church and all its alter egos are known generically as "the Vatican." Its leader is the "Pope," its diplo- matic agent is called the "Holy See," and its independent territory is called "The State of Vatican City." The Vatican participates in interna- tional conferences as well as in bilateral and multilateral treaties with world nations. Nevertheless, the Church is not a state, nor does it claim to be one. Trial before the Inquisition 9 The trial of Giorgio Moreto before the Inquisition in Venice, 1589 Brian Pullan Since the 1960s, historians of the great continental inquisitions of Rome, Spain and Portugal have divided into schools and put their documents to different uses.1 Some of them incline to the belief that court records are effi- cient only at performing the task of showing how courts proceeded, and that they can afford only a sectional view, taken from a peculiar angle, of the prisoners and witnesses who came before the courts to undergo interrogation. Historians who hold this opinion have therefore concentrated on the struc- ture and functions of the inquisitions themselves; on the mentality, aims and methods of their judges, officials and supporters; on the political struggles and personal rivalries that arose within the institutions; and on the relationship between inquisitions and diocesan and lay authorities in the states which accommodated them. Other scholars, quite the other way, have turned to the prisoners rather than the judicial panels, and have looked to the trial records to provide a key to the mind and conduct of independent thinkers and rebels against ecclesiast- ical orthodoxy. Some have used the transcripts to examine systematic heresies formally condemned by papal bulls or conciliar pronouncements. Some have explored the ways in which inquisitions advanced or discouraged the process by which popular magic began to be perceived as diabolical witchcraft and prosecuted as apostasy from the Christian faith. Several writers, in search of the typical rather than the spectacular, have examined the routine cases which accounted for the bulk of the proceedings conducted by the Spanish and Roman Inquisitions. -

Dal 1548, data di pubblicazione della sua prima raccolta di Rime presso il prestigioso editore Giolito de’ Ferrari a Venezia, ella pubblicò infatti ben otto successivi volumi di poesia, ristampati più volte da editori diversi, senza contare il manoscritto delle None Rime rimasto inedito, attualmente disponibile in un’unica copia presso la Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze, che ho avuto il privilegio di visionare e studiare nell’ambito di questo dottorato. -
