NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS RULES BASEBALL: KID PITCH: 5-6 YEAR-OLDS Applies to both practices and games. 1. The home team is listed first on the schedule and will occupy the third base side of the field. 2. Games are one hour and fifteen minutes or three innings, whichever is completed first. 3. No forfeits. 4. No score will be kept. 5. An NYS jersey and hat must be worn during the game. No exceptions! 6. Metal cleats, open toed shoes, or jewelry are not to be worn. 7. All players on the defensive team are allowed to be on the field. Teams will play with a limit of seven infielders and the rest of the team must occupy the outfield. Defense must rotate the pitcher position every inning. 8. Infielders must stay in normal baseball positions with the exception of the catcher. For example, the pitcher cannot be closer than 30 feet from home plate. 9. Coaches are allowed in the outfield but they must not interfere with play of the game. 10. Batting team must provide adults to be the first and third base coaches as well as place the ball on the tee for each batter. The coach may pitch to an individual batter based on their demonstrated ability to hit the ball at practice. Each batter will be given three pitches/chances to hit the ball then the tee must be used. Children who cannot hit a pitched ball at practice should only use the tee during games. 11. All team members must be on the batting line up. -

WHEATON YOUTH BASEBALL INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE SUPPLEMENTARY RULES Revised & Approved: February 15, 2018 The Instructional League was established as an intermediary step between Coach Pitch and Mustang League “A” Baseball for the purpose of introducing the skill of pitching to the game. The League is limited to those players currently in the second grade at the start of the season. This league, like Coach-Pitch, is considered to be an introduction to organized baseball. League standings will not be kept and All Star Day and Championship Day are not applicable at this level. League play will be governed by PONY League Baseball Rules unless otherwise stated in these supplementary rules. The intent of Wheaton Youth Baseball is to teach the rules of the game, develop skills, provide an opportunity for fun, and to teach teamwork and sportsmanship. MANAGERS AND UMPIRES HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO WAIVE ANY RULES SET FORTH IN THESE SUPPLEMENTARY RULES OR ANY OTHER REFERENCED DOCUMENTS OR RULES. I. GENERAL INFORMATION The American Sport Effectiveness Program (ASEP) has been adopted for use by Wheaton Park District Youth Baseball/Softball Board of Control (Board of Control). The Wheaton Park District will fund ASEP and will advise all managers of their certification upon the successful completion of the course. New managers are required to complete the certification within one year of entering the baseball program. ASEP managers will be given first priority in team assignments. It is the responsibility of each manager or their replacement to see to the proper conduct of themselves, their coaches, players and team fans. Failure to carry out this responsibility may result in game forfeiture, and/or disciplinary action, including removal from the baseball program. -

The “Baseball Rule” Faces an Interesting Test One of the many beauties of baseball, affectionately known as “America’s pastime,” is the ability for people to come to the stadium and become ingrained in the action and get the chance to interact with their heroes. Going to a baseball game, as opposed to going to most other sporting events, truly gives a fan the opportunity to take part in the action. However, this can come at a steep price as foul balls enter the stands at alarming speeds and occasionally strike spectators. According to a recent study, approximately 1,750 people get hurt each year by batted 1 balls at Major League Baseball (MLB) games, which adds up to twice every three games. The 2015 MLB season featured many serious incidents that shed light on the issue of 2 spectator protection. This has led to heated debates among the media, fans, and even players and 3 managers as to what should be done to combat this issue. Currently, there is a pending class action lawsuit against Major League Baseball (“MLB”). CHAPTER 1 Fair Ball! Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average. -

Christian Brothers Baseball History 1930 - 1959 By James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 1 Introductory Note This is an attempt to chronicle the rich and colorful history of baseball played at Christian Brothers High School from the years 1930 to 1959. Much of the pertinent information for such an endeavor exists only in yearbooks or in scrapbooks from long ago. Baseball is a spring sport, and often yearbooks were published before the season’s completion. There are even years where yearbooks where not produced at all, as is the case for the years 1930 to 1947. Prep sports enjoyed widespread coverage in the local papers, especially during the hard years of the Great Depression and World War II. With the aid of old microfilm machines at the City Library, it was possible to resurrect some of those memorable games as told in the pages of the Sacramento Bee and Union newspapers. But perhaps the best mode of research, certainly the most enter- taining, is the actual testimony of the ballplayers themselves. Their recall of events from 50 plus years ago, even down to the most minor of details is simply astonishing. Special thanks to Kathleen Davis, Terri Barbeau, Joe Franzoia, Gil Urbano, Vince Pisani, Billy Rico, Joe Sheehan, and Frank McNamara for opening up their scrapbooks and sharing photographs. This document is by no means a complete or finished account. It is indeed a living document that requires additions, subtractions, and corrections to the ongoing narrative. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING METHODS IN STATISTICS 3 Abstract This study explored the impact of instructional style in the teaching of introductory statistics on students’ attitudes towards statistics and on students’ academic outcomes in statistics courses. Four university statistics instructors were surveyed to identify their instructional style. In addition, their students’ (� = 313) mean course scores and mean scores on the Learning Outcomes for Statistical Methods instrument were analyzed. Based on an independent measure of learning outcomes for students, the data indicate instructional styles that are more inquiry- based may be more effective overall for student achievement on the Learning Outcomes for Statistical Methods instrument. There was a significant decrease found between pre- and post- survey SATS-36 means for the students’ Value, Interest, and Effort component scores. -

Baseball Glossary Ace: A team's best pitcher, usually the first pitcher in starting rotation. Alley: Also called "gap"; the outfield area between the outfielders. Around the Horn: A play run from third, to second, to first base. Assist: An outfielder helps put an offensive player out, crediting the outfielder with an "assist". At Bat: An offensive player is up to bat. The batter is allowed three outs. Backdoor Slider: A pitch thought to be out of strike zone crosses the plate. Backstop: The barrier behind the home plate. Bag: The base. Balk: An illegal motion made by the pitcher intended to deceive runners at base, to the runners' credit who then get to advance to the next base. Ball: A call made by the umpire when a pitch goes outside the strike zone. Ballist: A vintage baseball term for "ballplayer". Baltimore Chop: A hitting technique used by batters during the "dead-ball" period and named after the Baltimore Orioles. The batter strikes the ball downward toward home plate, causing it to bounce off the ground and fly high enough for the batter to flee to first base. Base Coach: A coach that stands on bases and signals the players. Base Hit: A hit that reaches at least first base without error. Base Line: A white chalk line drawn on the field to designate fair from foul territory. Base on Balls: Also called "walk"; an advance awarded a batter against a pitcher. The batter is delivered four pitches declared "ball" by the umpire for going outside the strike zone. The batter gets to walk to first base. -

Carolyn Taylor, MSc Sport Biomechanics Laboratory Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management University of Manitoba Softball Pitching Technique Softball pitching is the most important skill in the game of softball, as the pitcher can dominate as no other player is able to do. Softball is usually a low scoring game in which only one or two runs are scored during the entire game, often due to the dominance of a highly skilled pitcher. Pitchers require several years to perfect their technique and gain control over the speed and direction of their pitches. Softball pitchers use an underhand motion that is not as stressful to the shoulder joint as the overhand pitch used in baseball. Softball pitchers can often pitch several games in one day, and often have an extended career of many years due to the lower stress levels on the shoulder joint. A softball pitcher may pitch as many as six 7-inning games during a weekend tournament; and often the best pitcher on a college team pitches most, if not all of the games each season (Werner, Guido et al. 2005). This may result in approximately 1200-1500 pitches being thrown in a 3-day period for a windmill pitcher, as compared to 100-150 for a baseball pitcher (Werner, Guido et al. 2005). The softball pitch is a relatively simple motion, consisting of a step forward from the mound onto the foot on the non pitching arm side, weight shift onto this foot, and rotation of the shoulders and trunk to a position facing the batter.
