PRESENTS WOLF CHILDREN A MAMORU HOSODA FILM Running time: 117 minutes Certificate: TBC Opens at UK cinemas on 25th October Press Contacts Elle McAtamney – [email protected] For hi-res images/production notes and more, go to – www.fetch.fm To the children, a movie like a delightful, fun fairy tale… To the youth, to make raising children, which they have yet to experience, seem full of surprises and wonder… And to the parents, to let them reminisce about their children’s growth… I am striving to make an invigorating movie that satisfies the principles of entertainment. Mamoru Hosoda Director, screenwriter, author of original story INTRODUCTION The long-awaited new film by Director Mamoru Hosoda! Yet another movie that enthralls people of all generations!! In “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (2006), he depicted the radiance of youth in flashing moments of life. In “SUMMER WARS” (2009), he told a story about a miracle, of how the bond between people saved Earth’s crisis, and the film swept awards domestic and abroad. Mamoru Hosoda has become the most noted animation director in the world. Why do his works appeal to people of all generations? His stories are not about the extraordinary, and they are not about superheroes. Set in towns that could really exist, the main characters are surrounded by ordinary people and are troubled by slightly unique circumstances, which they struggle to overcome. Based on well-thought-out scenarios, these real-to-life stories are made into dynamic animation. That’s why the main characters seem so familiar to us and draw our sympathy, and we get excited watching how they fare.

The Dissertation Committee for Amanda Landa certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Contemporary Japanese Seishun Eiga Cinema Committee: Lalitha Gopalan, Supervisor Janet Staiger, Co-Supervisor Kirsten Cather Shanti Kumar David Desser Michael Kackman Contemporary Japanese Seishun Eiga Cinema by Amanda Landa Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the GraduateSchool of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2017 Acknowledgements The dissertation process is always present and foreboding in one’s graduate career. An always looming presence, the first chapter is always theoretically sketched, perhaps even drafted, but the rest are generally to be filed under “fiction.” The same, of course, happened for me, and throughout this endeavor I have learned to draft, to re-read and edit, and most especially to never be afraid to start over. My primary goal was to hone my writerly voice, to elevate from description into argument and most of all, to slow down. Time and financial pressures are plentiful, and early in the writing process I wanted to rush; to achieve quickly what was later revealed to me something that could not and should not be rushed. I chose to write chapter by chapter as the films and genre categories presented themselves, allowing myself to enjoy each chapter’s research process in small achievable steps. Integral to this process are my co-supervisors, Associate Professor Lalitha Gopalan and Professor Emeritus Janet Staiger. In particular, I want to give thanks for Lalitha’s rigorous mentorship, guidance, and enthusiasm for this project and its films and Janet, a constant mentor, whose patience and attendance to both my writerly and emotional well- being will never be forgotten.

Outlaw Masters Of Japanese Film Dedicated to the memory of my late father, Paul R. Desjardins, 1919–2003, who went through hell his last few years and was consequently unable to finish his own book on his pioneering work in electron microscopy (in the field of plant pathology). Also to my mother, Rosemary, who has had her own gauntlet to run in the last year and has managed to come out the other side. Both my parents have always been loyal, loving and there for me, never turning their backs on me during my extended period of raising hell. To my girl, Lynne Margulies, a truly great soulmate in all things, including the creative process. And to the memory of late director Kinji Fukasaku, a great inspiration to anyone daring to think of giving up in the face of adversity. • Japanese Cinema Goes Global
JapaneseCinema Goes Global: Cosmopolitan Subjectivity and the Transnationalizationof the Culture Industry Yoshiharu Tezuka Department of Media and Communications Goldsmith College, University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 1 Declaration I declare the work presented in this thesis is my own. 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the Japanesefilm industry's interactions with the West and Asia, the development of transnational filmmaking practices, and the transition of discursive regimes through which different types of cosmopolitan subjectivities are produced. It draws upon Ulrich Deck's concept of "banal cosmopolitanization" (2006) - which inextricably enmeshesthe everyday lives of individuals acrossthe industrialized societieswithin the global market economy. As has often been pointed out, modem Japanesenational identity since the 19th century has been constructed from a geopolitical condition of being both a "centre" and a "periphery", in the sensethat it has always seenitself as the centre of East Asia, while being peripheral to the flow of Western global processes.Contrary to the common belief that defeat in the war sixty years ago radically changed the Japanesesocial structure and value system, this sense of national identity and of Japan being "different from the West but above Asia" was left intact if not ideologically encouraged by the American Occupation policy through the preservation of many pre-war institutions (cf., Dower 1999; Sakai 2006). In a world that was to become dominated by a hierarchical logic of "the West and the rest" established against the backdrop of the Cold War, Japan and its culture effectively found itself in a privileged but ambiguous position as part of but not part of the `West', something which was solidified by the international success of Japanese national cinema in the 1950s.

  • 年越しそば Toshikoshi-Soba Winter 2015 – 2016
For your cultural life in Hiroshima 年越しそば Toshikoshi-soba Toshikoshi-soba is buckwheat noodles customarily eaten on New Year’s Eve. December 31st, which launches the start of the important New Year celebrations, is called ômisoka. It’s a custom for families to eat hot buckwheat noodles (toshikoshi-soba) in the evening before midnight (but not after). The name literally means ‘year-crossing noodles’ – in other words, seeing out the old year and welcoming in the new. Various reasons are given for this custom. One common explanation is that the length of soba noodles symbolizes longevity. Another is that soba is easy to cut, so it symbolizes the cutting off of all the hardships, troubles and debts of the year just ending. In the Edo period (A.D. 1603 – 1868), there was a custom of eating soba at the end of every month for the same reason; it was called misoka-soba “last day of the month noodles”. The custom also varies around the country. In some areas, people think thicker, longer udon (wheat flour noodles) are more symbolic of longevity. And in Okinawa they prefer the thicker Okinawan version of soba noodles (ryûkyû-soba).
