NATURE OF SUBMISSION: Design Research This Design report records a creative design approach together with the development of original ideas resulting in an integrated proposal for presenting Axum’s rich tangible and intangible heritage to visitors to this important World Heritage Town. This innovative proposal seeks to use local resources and skills to create a distinct and memorable experience for visitors to Axum. It relies on engaging members of the local community to manage and ‘own’ the various ‘attractions’ for visitors, hopefully keeping a substantial proportion of earnings from tourism in the local community. The proposal combines attitudes to Design with fresh approaches to curatorship that can be applied to other sites. In this study, propositions are tested in several schemes relating to the design of ‘Interpretation centres’ and ideas for exhibits that would bring them to life and engage visitors. ABSTRACT: Axum, in the highlands of Ethiopia was the centre of an important trading empire, controlling the Red Sea and channeling exotic African merchandise into markets of the East and West. In the fourth century (AD), it became one of the first states to adopt Christianity as a state religion. Axum became the major religious centre for the Ethiopian Coptic Church. Axum’s most spectacular archaeological remains are the large carved monoliths – stelae that are concentrated in the Stelae Park opposite the Cathedral precinct. -

Some Observations on the "Germanic" Plainchant Tradition* By Alexander Blachly Anyone examining the various notational systems according to which medieval scribes committed the plainchant repertory to written form must be impressed both by the obvious relatedness of the systems and by their differences. There are three main categories: the neumatic notations from the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries (written without a staff and incapable, therefore, of indicating precise pitches);1 the quadratic nota tion in use in Italy, Spain, France, and England-the "Romanic" lands from the twelfth century on (this is the "traditional" plainchant notation, written usually on a four-line staff and found also in most twentieth century printed books, e.g., Liber usualis, Antiphonale monasticum, Graduale Romanum); and the several types of Germanic notation that use a staff but retain many of the features of their neumatic ancestors. The second and third categories descended from the first. The staffless neumatic notations that transmit the Gregorian repertory in ninth-, tenth-, and eleventh-century sources, though unlike one another in some important respects, have long been recognized as transmitting the same corpus of melodies. Indeed, the high degree of concordance between manuscripts that are widely separated by time and place is one of the most remarkable aspects the plainchant tradition. 84 Scrinium 12 (2016) 84-103 Nosnitsin Journal of Patrology and Critical Hagiography www.brill.com/scri The Old Chants for St. Gärima: New Evidence from Gärˁalta Denis Nosnitsin Universität Hamburg, Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian Studies, Hamburg [email protected] Abstract The article presents an old folio kept in the church of Däbrä Śaḥl (Gärˁalta, northern Ethiopia), one of a few other leaves, all originating from a codex dating to a period well before the mid–14thcentury. The codicological and palaeographical features reveal the antiquity of the fragment. The content of the folio is remarkable since it contains chants dedicated to St. Gärima (also known as Yǝsḥaq) which can be identified as the chants for the Saint from the Dǝggwa, the main Ethiopian chant book. In the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥǝdo Church the feast of Gärima is celebrated on the 17th of Säne. By means of the fragment of Däbrä Śaḥl, the composition of the liturgical chants for Gärima can be dated to a time much prior to the mid-14th century. Moreover, both the chants and the 15th-century Acts of Gärima by Bishop Yoḥannǝs refer to a famous mir- acle worked by the Saint. This fact proves that the miraculous account, in whatever form, was in circulation prior to the mid-14th century. The Seven Major Fasts In The Orthodox Tewahedo Church By: Tigist Lakew 1. The Fast Of Nativity/ Advent ( Tsome Nebiyat) The fast that precedes Christmas. Christmas is celebrated on January 7th. This fast is to commemorate the fast that Moses fasted in the Mount of Sinai. He fasted for 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments which hosted the word of God in it. As a lesson from Moses, he fasted prior to Christmas for 40 days before receiving the word of God, so we do the same and fast for 40 days before receiving the word of God. 2. The Fast Of Nineveh ( Tsome Nineveh) Precedes the great lent by 2 weeks. This Fast is held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This Fast commemorates the fast the people living in the city of Nineveh did because the city was full of sins . God sent the prophet Jonah to the city of Nineveh , to repent and pray because their city was about to get destroyed. The King and the whole city began fasting and God heard their prayers and he forgave them. And taking that as a lesson we fast the three day fast so we can repent and be forgiven by God. 3. The Fast Of Great Lent ( Abiy Tsom) Proceeds the Fast of Nineveh. It begins on a Monday and ends on Easter ( Faskia, Abiy Tsom) Within this Fast each week is broken down into specific themes. 3. A rich manuscript tradition has facilitated numerous studies ofAquitanian sacred music, but to date most previous research has focused on one particular facet of the repertoire, often in isolation from its cultural context. This study seeks to view Aquitanian musical culture through several intersecting sacred and secular concerns and to relate the various musical traditions to the region's broader societal forces.
