Grown Ups and Guppies (6 mos- 3 yrs)

Making the water fun for your toddler is the first and most important step in learning to swim. This class is designed as an introduction to water course for parent and child couplets. Class consists of developmentally appropriate play activities and water safety skills that are parent- driven under the supervision of an instructor. Skills taught in Grown Ups and Guppies include entering and exiting the water safely, blowing bubbles through the mouth and the nose, floating on the front and the back while holding onto a parent, alternating arm movements, alternating leg movements, and standing up from a float. It is important to understand that this class will not teach your child to swim on his/her own, but rather acquaint him/her with the water and to ease any fears of the water. This class differs from our other swim lessons in that it does not require registration and is first come, first serve for each single day class (not a 2-week session). See our Grown Ups and Guppies flyer for updated class days and times! *Please note this is a drop in class and not part of the regular session.

Tot 1 (3-5 yrs)

This class is an introduction to water and water safety for children that are too old for Grown Ups and Guppies. It covers the same basic material as Grown Ups and Guppies, but in a group- lesson setting without a parent. Instructors will teach your child age appropriate water safety skills and encourage water exploration. Skills taught in Tot 1 include entering and exiting the water safely from multiple locations, blowing bubbles through the mouth and the nose, floating on the front and the back while holding onto the instructor, alternating arm movements, alternating leg movements, and standing up from a float.

Tot 2 (3-5 yrs)

This class builds on the skills your child learned in Grown Ups and Guppies or Tot 1. Your child will begin to do activities on his/her own and practice foundational elements of swimming. Skills taught in Tot 2 include entering and exiting the water safely, comfortably submerging entire face in the water, blowing bubbles through the mouth and the nose for 3 seconds, floating and gliding on the front and back with minimal assistance, coordinated forward and backward big arms, elementary backstroke (monkey, tree, rocketship), proper flutter kicking, rolling between front and back floats, and retrieving submerged objects in shallow water.

Tot 3 (3-5 yrs)

In this class, your child will begin to swim on his/her own! Instructors will provide assistance as needed with new skills but encourage swimmers to practice previous skills on their own to promote confidence in swimming. Skills taught in Tot 3 include comfortably submerging entire head underwater, jumping into water, unassisted front and back floats, unassisted front and back glides for 2 body lengths, unassisted forward and backward big arms for 2 body lengths, flutter kicking for 3 body lengths, returning to the wall by self, streamline, unassisted elementary backstroke (monkey, tree, rocketship), treading water, dolphin kicking, sidestroke, and retrieving submerged objects in at least chest deep water.

Level 1 (6-14 yrs)

This class is designed as an introductin to water and water safety class for older kids. Instructors will teach age appropriate water safety skills and help your child become better acquainted with the water. Although this is a beginners’ class, it covers the same information as Grown Ups and Guppies, Tot 1, and Tot 2 together since older children are generally more mature in attention span and physical endurance. Skills taught in Level 1 include entering and exiting the water safely, submerging entire face in the water, blowing bubbles through the mouth and nose for 3 seconds, assisted front and back floats, rolling between front and back floats, assisted front and back glides, assisted forward and backward big arms, elementary backstroke (monkey, tree, rocketship), proper flutter kicking, standing up from front and back floats, and retrieving submerged objects.

Level 2 (6-14 yrs)

In this class, your child will begin to swim on his/her own! Instructors will teach information that build on the skills learned in previous classes while encouraging swimmers to perform these skills on their own. Instructors will continue to provide assistance as needed in order to support your child’s growing confidence in the water. Skills taught in Level 2 include submerging entire face in the water, jumping in the water, unassisted front and back floats, unassisted front and back glides for 2 body lengths, unassisted forward and backward big arms for 2 body lengths, flutter kicking for 3 body lengths, returning to the wall by self, streamline, unassisted elementary backstroke (monkey, tree, rocketship), treading water, dolphin kicking, sidestroke, and retrieving submerged objects in at least chest deep water.

Level 3 (6-14 yrs)

This class serves as an introduction to competitive swimming. Your child should be comfortable swimming on his/her own for brief periods of time by now and will have knowledge of water safety skills and all 4 competitive strokes by completion of the class. Skills taught in Level 3 include freestyle (unassisted forward big arms) for 15 yards, backstroke (unassisted backward big arms) for 15 yards, side/rotary breathing on freestyle, flutter kick on front and back for 25 yards, elementary backstroke (monkey, tree, rocketship) for 10 yards, unassisted sidestroke for 10 yards, pushing off the wall underwater and in streamline, proper breaststroke technique, proper butterfly technique, diving, and being comfortable in deep water.

Level 4 (6-14 yrs)

This class is designed to refine stroke technique and ready your child for competitive swimming. Expectations are higher in this class in regard to distance and quality. Instructors will challenge swimmers to improve their endurance and technique in order to complete the water competency sequence and properly swim all competitive and emergency strokes. Skills taught in Level 4 are freestyle with side/rotary breathing for 25 yards, backstroke for 25 yards, breaststroke for 15 yards, butterfly for 15 yards, sidestroke for 15 yards, underwater swimming for 3 body lengths, flutter kicking for 50 yards, diving, open and flip turns, and treading water for 60 seconds.
