One chapter is on history of Christianity in Japan general, and another chapter is on Japanese society and cultural essentialism. In the chapter on Japanese culture, I used sources and methods from the areas of postcolonial studies, social anthropology and Japanese studies. The rest of the thesis studies individual theologians and their use of Japanese religious traditions, political views, and national consciousness in their theological reflections and Scriptural interpretations. Finally analysis and criticism is given from a postcolonial perspective.
