  • City Space + Globalization: Taiwan's Urban System in Transition
Jack F. Williams 40 TAIWAN'S URBAN SYSTEM IN TRANSITION Jack F. Williams s Taiwan nears the millennium, roughly half a century Ahas passed since Japanese colonial rule ended and Taiwan embarked on a new era of development as a de facto independent state. Properly speaking, Taiwan has moved beyond the "newly industrialized economy" (NIE) label that has been attached to it for some three decades or more. Taiwan's industrialization is no longer new, nor is its urbanization process. Taiwan's urban system and urban development process reflect the island's transition from "developing" to "developed" status (at least as defined by the OECD). Taiwan is now in the latter (or terminal) phase of the urbanization curve, in which the rate of urban population growth decreases, reflecting in part a similar slowing of the island's overall population growth (currently hovering at just under one per cent per year). Thus, some fifty years into Taiwan's modern transformation from former Japanese agricultural colony to quasi independent industrial powerhouse, this is an appropriate time to examine Taiwan's urban system from a variety of perspectives, to see where its urban development process stands in terms of both positive and negative characteristics, and to attempt to discern future directions and options. This topic is also timely given the fact that very few Western geographers or others concerned with urban issues outside of Taiwan have studied Taiwan's urban development, especially in an ongoing basis. Although Taiwan admittedly is a relatively small island and discrete geographical region of just 24,000 sq.

Data Science as a Foundation of Integrating and Enriching Administrative Data: The Case of Constructing Taiwan Indigenous Peoples open research Data (TIPD) Based on Taiwan Household Registration Administrative Data Ji-Ping Lin, Ph.D. RCHSS, Academia Sinica Taipei, Taiwan 115 E-mail: [email protected] Office phone: +886-2-27898139 (1st draft, August 2016) Abstract Embedded in collecting, cleaning, cleansing, processing, & exploring exploding individual digital records is data science. Data science is by no means a new field of science. Rather, it is multidisciplinary in essence and consists of three necessary components: (1) hacking skills, (2) advanced mathematics and statistics knowledge and skills, & (3) domain knowledge expertise. The research is based on a four-year Joint Research Agreement between Academia Sinica and Council of Taiwan Indigenous Peoples. The paper aims to demonstrate how data science, i.e., integration of hacking skills, advanced math./statistics knowledge & skills, and domain knowledge expertise, is applied to construct Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Open Research Data (TIPD, see http://TIPD.sinica.edu.tw, and https://osf.io/e4rvz/) based on Taiwan Household Registration administrative micro data. This paper reports the progress and efforts of Taiwan academicians struggling to construct contemporary TIPs Data (or TIPD) by integrating the micro data of 2000 Taiwan population census and household registration system, using state-of-the-art data science technology like geocoding of primary statistical areas, record linkage

There are many kinds of transit choices for public transportation systems include Bus, Train, Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT), High-Speed Rail (HSR), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Taxi, Minibus, and so on. Public transportation systems also can help to reduce health risk determinants like air pollution and motor vehicle crashes. This research paper aims to examine how the supply chain relationship impacts public transportation quality in Taichung city, Taiwan and Chiang Mai city, Thailand and analyses the construction of supply chain relationship on quality cooperation for public transportation in Taichung city, Taiwan and Chiang Mai city, Thailand. F Introduction to Tiger Consulting Taiwan (Legal name-Tiger Consulting Taiwan Limited) Tiger Consulting Taiwan Limited 2F., No.1-10, Sec. 5, Zhongxiao E. Rd., Xinyi Dist., Taipei City 110, Taiwan Email: [email protected] Website:www.tiger-consulting.net Key Country Facts Official Language Mandarin is the official national language and is spoken by the vast majority of the population of Taiwan. It has been the primary language of instruction in schools since the Japanese rule ended. As in Hong Kong and Macau, Traditional Chinese is used as the writing system in Taiwan. Currency: New Taiwan Dollar (NT$) Time Zone: UTC +8 Capital City: Taipei is the Capital of Taiwan. Laws and Customs: The political and legal statuses of Taiwan are contentious issues. The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims that the Republic of China government is illegitimate, referring to it as the "Taiwan Authority". The ROC, however, with its own constitution, independently elected president and armed forces, continues to view itself as a sovereign state. The present territory of the state has never been controlled by the PRC. Internationally, there is controversy on whether the ROC still exists as a state or a defunct state per international law due to the loss of membership/recognition in the United Nations and lack of wide diplomatic recognition. In a poll of Taiwanese aged 20 and older taken by the TVBS in March 2009, a majority of 64% opted for the status quo, while 19% favoured independence and 5% unification. Cultural observations The aboriginal cultures of Taiwan represent 2% of the population of the island.

Leaked portions of this agreement show that it includes an international mechanism to deal with disputes of trade that benefits business interests at the expense of the rights of nations to set their own health policies. This supra-national mechanism known as the investor state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism has the potential to limit public health in numerous ways. Methods: Present positions of several Pacific Rim countries and international organizations opposing the TPP
