EDEN (Australan Band) BIO
__________________________ EDEN (Australan Band) BIO FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Saskia Reus-Smit February 2017 Media Relations [email protected] 61 435 743 576 EDEN is a Darkwave band that formed in Melbourne,Australia in 1988 by singer-songwriter Sean Bowley and multi-instrumentalist Pieter Bourke. EDEN’s debut performance was at the Baden Powell Hotel, Prahran. The band quickly established a local following that saw them perform regularly as a fixture in Melbourne's burgeoning alternative music scene. EDEN’s initial 12 inch EP ‘The Light Between Worlds’ was released in 1990 on Nightshift Records, Scotland. The EP caught the attention of BBC Radio's John Peel who featured tracks on his show, resulting in rapid support of EDEN by The Alternative Press Magazine in the USA. A 7” single version of ‘Searching for Angel’s Hands’ was released by Ultimate Records Australia the same year, broadening EDEN’s growing supporter base through a live appearance on Australia’s national pop music TV series Countdown Revolution. In 1991 EDEN moved to London based label Third Mind Records who continued to grow the band’s profile in Europe and the USA through the 1992 release of their first full length CD ‘Gateway to the Mysteries’ (released in Australia under Elysium/Shock Records). The album was described by the music press as sounding akin to 'the Cocteau Twins had they existed in the 1890s'. In 1993 EDEN joined the roster of Projekt Records, USA releasing the ‘Healingbow’ EP. In 1993, EDEN established a new lineup, Bourke leaving the band as drummer Peter Barrett, keyboardist Paul Machlis, guitarist Tracy Ellerton and bassist Ewan McArthur joined Bowley to form the next iteration of EDEN. -

Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017). -

Recording the Insider Issue 10
hen I hear stories like Pieter Bourke’s it restores my faith in the world a little. Pieter’s music is sparse, dark, painstakingly well produced, and obviously filmic in its quality, but it’s still Wa brave Hollywood director that hands over the reins of a soundtrack to a relatively unknown composer from Melbourne. But it happened. Pieter Bourke is well known in the ambient fraternity for his project, Soma. His pairing with ex Dead Can Dance vocalist, Lisa Gerrard, led to the moody, and critically acclaimed, Duality album. Then Hollywood heavyweight, Michael Mann, got on the phone asking them to work on his film, The Insider. A Golden Globe nomination followed. Not bad work for a man who only now is deciding that he better trade in his Atari for something that can run Cubase VST. Christopher Holder: So how did the gig for The Insider eventuate? Pieter Bourke: It mainly came about through the Duality album which Lisa and I recorded in 1997. Also, Lisa had worked with Michael Mann when she contributed to the soundtrack for the film, Heat. So there was already a connection there. He approached us to license two pieces off Duality, because at that stage he had Graeme Revell working on the soundscore. Lisa and I had a meeting with Michael in Los Angeles where he gave us a detailed presenta- tion on the film and a copy of the script. When Score a major Hollywood feature film in a studio we returned to Australia we began writing, and based around a Mackie 8-bus, an Akai sampler and initially sent Michael a DAT tape with seven or eight cues which were not synced to any image an Atari running Cubase – and garner a Golden at that stage. -

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.
