  • Informational World Cities an Empirical Investigation of Cities in the 21St Century
Informational world cities An empirical investigation of cities in the 21st century Inaugural-Dissertation zur Erlangung des Doktorgrades der Philosophie (Dr. phil.) durch die Philosophische Fakultät der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf vorgelegt von Agnes Mainka Betreuer: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang G. Stock Prof. Dr. Isabella Peters Düsseldorf Januar 2017 Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate world cities that are in a network. The network is constituted by the flows of capital, power, and information. The key innovation is ICT and the acknowledgment of human capital as an important economic resource. The research approach combines urban studies, sociology, and information science. Thus, diverse hypotheses have emerged in recent years that are going to describe the knowledge, creative, digital, or smart city. In the work at hand, I will combine the approaches of diverse city types and different research fields into one investigation. According to twelve hypotheses, characteristics and best practice examples of informational world city’s development will be identified. The focus is to emphasize on real world examples. The dominating research method is grounded theory which allows to mix different approaches to gather data, e.g. interviews, field research, and statistics. In total, 31 cities are investigated regarding their digital and cognitive infrastructure, political willingness and cityness. The interviews and field studies have been conducted between June 2010 and May 2014. Literature and secondary data has been updated continuously. The focus of this empirical investigation of 31 informational world cities is to verify actual research approaches based on expert interviews. Do experts with different backgrounds and from different origins agree with general assumptions that explain the success and forecast further growth of cities in the 21st century? In general, cities in a globalized world become more similar.

www.internationalgraphicnovelandcomicsconference.com [email protected] #IGNCC18 @TheIGNCC RETRO! TIME, MEMORY, NOSTALGIA THE NINTH INTERNATIONAL GRAPHIC NOVEL AND COMICS CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 27TH – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY, UK Retro – a looking to the past – is everywhere in contemporary culture. Cultural critics like Jameson argue that retro and nostalgia are symptoms of postmodernism – that we can pick and choose various items and cultural phenomena from different eras and place them together in a pastiche that means little and decontextualizes their historicity. However, as Bergson argues in Memory and Matter, the senses evoke memories, and popular culture artefacts like comics can bring the past to life in many ways. The smell and feel of old paper can trigger memories just as easily as revisiting an old haunt or hearing a piece of music from one’s youth. As fans and academics we often look to the past to tell us about the present. We may argue about the supposed ‘golden age’ of comics. Our collecting habits may even define our lifestyles and who we are. But nostalgia has its dark side and some regard this continuous looking to the past as a negative emotion in which we aim to restore a lost adolescence. In Mediated Nostalgia, Ryan Lizardi argues that the contemporary media fosters narcissistic nostalgia ‘to develop individualized pasts that are defined by idealized versions of beloved lost media texts’ (2). This argument suggests that fans are media dupes lost in a reverie of nostalgic melancholia; but is belied by the diverse responses of fandom to media texts. Moreover, ‘retro’ can be taken to imply an ironic appropriation.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

  • Comic Art, Children's Literature, and the New Comics Studies
360 Charles Hatfield Comic Art, Children’s Literature, and the New Comics Studies Charles Hatfield At Comic-Con International’s annual Eisner Awards ceremony in San Diego during July 2004, Pulitzer-winning author (and new-fledged comics creator) Michael Chabon gave a keynote speech about comic books and children. Speaking to the comic book community, Chabon declared victory in the struggle to elevate the comics medium and its reputation among adult readers, noting, “More adults are reading better comics than ever before” (“Greasy”). However, Chabon’s real subject, which he decried, was the medium’s abandonment of children; this action is fueled, he argued, by an arriviste’s sense of embarrassment over its origins. Chiding the industry for forgetting young readers, Chabon ended by envisioning a new sort of comics for children, “truly thrilling, honestly observed and remembered, richly imagined . [comics] about children” [Chabon’s italics] (“Greasy”). He issued a call to arms, urging the comic book industry to pass on the love of the medium and, as the adage goes, pay it forward. Despite its admonitory tone, Chabon’s speech earned a warm ovation, perhaps because his remarks distilled years’ worth of comic-book industry punditry. In fact, the gap between comic books and today’s children has long been a source of concern among professionals—certainly within the transatlantic, English-language comics business. Many creators, within and outside of the comic book-specialty market, have sought to bridge this gap: witness the sporadic touting of “all-ages,” which is the preferred euphe- mism for children’s, comics within comic book shops, or the presence in mainstream bookstores of such high-profile projects as Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s Little Lit series (launched in 2000 for HarperCollins).

Look and Learn A History of the Classic Children's Magazine By Steve Holland Text © Look and Learn Magazine Ltd 2006 First published 2006 in PDF form on www.lookandlearn.com by Look and Learn Magazine Ltd 54 Upper Montagu Street, London W1H 1SL 1 Acknowledgments Compiling the history of Look and Learn would have be an impossible task had it not been for the considerable help and assistance of many people, some directly involved in the magazine itself, some lifetime fans of the magazine and its creators. I am extremely grateful to them all for allowing me to draw on their memories to piece together the complex and entertaining story of the various papers covered in this book. First and foremost I must thank the former staff members of Look and Learn and Fleetway Publications (later IPC Magazines) for making themselves available for long and often rambling interviews, including Bob Bartholomew, Keith Chapman, Doug Church, Philip Gorton, Sue Lamb, Stan Macdonald, Leonard Matthews, Roy MacAdorey, Maggie Meade-King, John Melhuish, Mike Moorcock, Gil Page, Colin Parker, Jack Parker, Frank S. Pepper, Noreen Pleavin, John Sanders and Jim Storrie. My thanks also to Oliver Frey, Wilf Hardy, Wendy Meadway, Roger Payne and Clive Uptton, for detailing their artistic exploits on the magazine. Jenny Marlowe, Ronan Morgan, June Vincent and Beryl Vuolo also deserve thanks for their help filling in details that would otherwise have escaped me. David Abbott and Paul Philips, both of IPC Media, Susan Gardner of the Guild of Aviation Artists and Morva White of The Bible Society were all helpful in locating information and contacts.
