Researchers debate whether Galilean cities utilized trade routes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean or were self-sufficient, with little access to trade. An analysis of material culture found at specific sites can most efficiently determine the extent of trade in the region. If commerce is extensive, a significant assemblage of foreign goods will be found; an overwhelming majority of provincial artifacts will suggest minimal trade. -

Macrolepis, a typical mediterranean species, has been recorded in the past few decades throughout Greece. The triggers were mostly human influences and specifically illegal cuttings, wildfires, and overgrazing. Regeneration and future management of this species is therefore questionable. To investigate the effect of companion plants on this decline as expressed by water availability and plant growth, a pot experiment was conducted and oak seedlings were planted with Bromus sterilis and a mixture of Trifolium repens and T. fragiferum as companion plants. Midday water potential from May to September and oak growth at the end of the experiment were measured as factors affecting oak physiology. The results suggest a different effect on the water potential of the oak seedlings depending on the companion plant species and the time of the year. The presence of a companion plant that has completed its life cycle by the end of spring may positively influence the water status of oaks during the summer months due to shading and lower soil water evaporation. On the contrary, when the companion plants continue their life cycle in the summer, the negative effect may be continued, specifically during the very dry months. -

Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, POB 12, Rehovot 76100, Israel Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of four species of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus) in Israel namely, Q. boissieri, Q. calliprinos, Q. ithaburensis, and Q. look were collected and identified from natural forest stands during the period 2010-2013. A total of twenty-seven species were determined from nine scale insect families: Asterolecaniidae (3 species), Coccidae (3), Di- aspididae (7), Eriococcidae (3), Kermesidae (6), Kuwaniidae (1), Mono- phlebidae (1), Pseudococcidae (2), and Putoidae (1). Six of these species represent new records for Israel and five are identified to the genus level. Kuwaniidae is a new family record for Israel. Species that were previously collected or recorded on oaks in Israel are listed and discussed. Information is given about host trees and global distribution. The majority of the spe- cies reported here are monophagous or stenophagous and they appear to be non-pestiferous to the oak trees in Israel. General traits that describe each scale insect family in the field are provided, together with an identification key to aid in the determination of slide-mounted specimens into families represented in this study. Gaertn. and Clerodendrum splendens G. Don, two members of the cosmopolitan family Lamiaceae, are successfully acclimatized in Egypt. The current study aimed to evaluate the local plants as potential candidates for implementation in pharmaceutical industries, which necessitates an intensive investigation of safety and bioactivity of the cited species. To ensure quality and purity of the raw material, criteria for characterization of and/or discrimination between the two species were established via botanical profiling, proximate analysis, phytochemical screening and UPLC analysis. The leaves were subjected to comparative biological and chemical study to select the most suitable from the medicinal and economic standpoints. In this respect, the antioxidant cyotoxic and antimicrobial potentials of the defatted ethanol (70%) extracts of the tested samples were assessed in-vitro. Meanwhile, the chemical composition of the leaves was examined through qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses of the phenolic components. In this respect, The leaves of C. inerme were selected for more intensive both phytochemical and biological investigation. -

Agricultural land in Palestine: Letters to Sir Moses Montefiore, 1839 RUTH KARK Letters on the subject of land and agriculture, written by the Jews of Safed, Tiberias, Acre, Haifa, Jerusalem and Hebron to Sir Moses Monteflore during his second visit to Palestine in 1839, have been dealt with by various authors. Some have seen them in the context of the history of themovement for Jewish national revival and the 'Hibbat Zion' movement, or of European concepts about 'the restoration of the Jews'.1 Others have used them as sources for the study of the history of Jewish settlement in Palestine and of the attempts of Jews to engage in productive occupations there.2 Most authors, however, did not study the documents themselves very carefully. A more detailed examina? tion was published by Israel Bartal.3 The present paper focuses on the availability of land and agricultural activity in Palestine during the period of the Egyptian occupation (1831-41). It is based on a close study of the original manuscripts of the letters, and forms part of a broader study on changes in the pattern of land ownership in Palestine between 1800 and 1917, and their effecton settlement. The letters4 represent a rich, but barely tapped resource relating to the Egyptian administration, and to the historical geography and economic history of the Middle East and Palestine. They contain information on the period preceding the Egyptian occupation as well as on the period of occupation itself, and include references to the state of security (looting and banditry, for example), the treatment of minorities, taxation, local rulers, public health (epidemics) and natural disasters (earthquakes). -
