Welcome “The very warmest of welcomes to Macclesfield’s Barnaby Festival 2016. We’re bacK with a bang: this year’s programme includes over 100 events across 10 midsummer days, over 60 of which are completely free. Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Macclesfield’s own Jodrell BanK, our theme this year is Space in all its manifestations. Professor Tim O’Brien’s ‘In Conversation’ with Professor Brian Cox promises to be a highlight, but it’s just one of the many science projects throughout the programme: from Space School to Solar Gazing and a galaxy of other absorbing events. Barnaby wouldn’t be Barnaby without its Parade, which blasts off at 1pm on Sat 18th June. This year, it’s going to be ‘out of this world’, with all manner of space-related creatures roaming the streets of Macc. And we’re over the moon to announce that well over half of our programme has been made in partnership with local artists and businesses, who’ve created worK that shines a new light on the town we love. Music’s always been at the heart of the Festival, and this year we welcome bacK Stephen Morris (New Order), who’s on the decKs at our ‘Gimp Twister’ Music Lounge over the rest weeKend. Don’t miss the 3 chance to see John Bramwell and Sam DucKworth in a unique double bill, and checK out the wonderfully intimate performances in people’s homes that make up our Secret Concert Series. Once again, our Visual Art programme is world- class. Bedwyr Williams and Hondartza Fraga are both making worK in Macclesfield, to be showcased across the Festival period, with Liliane Lijn and Hannah Imlach joining four local artists to produce new commissions in locations across the town. And there’s still more: BBC’s NicK Robinson joins us, coming bacK to his home- town to give us a unique perspective on the politics of today. Comedian Francesca Martinez brings us her Wobbly Manifesto show in a UK premiere, and we’re delighted to be worKing with Festival Artist in Residence: writer and poet Ailsa Holland. La Lune, possibly the biggest family spectacle ever seen in Macc, has been commissioned and produced for Barnaby by the renowned Wild Rumpus company. The adventure begins with the wonderful and moving ‘Astronomer’s Story’ on the first weeKend, with amazing mysterious and interactive happenings all weeK, and a breathtaking finale. Finally, I want to express my deep gratitude to the wonderful Festival team and all the incredible volunteers who have worKed tirelessly to bring this year’s amazing Festival to life. When Strawberry Studios closed down the staff were busy clearing out the building. There were at least 20,000 copy masters from various bands and the artistes or their agents. They were contacted as to whether they wished to buy the tapes from the Strawberry library because they were clearing out. Mostly the artistes already had their own copies and said Strawberry should dispose of them. Some asked for the copy masters and these were handed over. The remaining copy masters were consigned to the skips. A colleague David Drennan was assigned the task of contacting as many of the clients as possible about their tapes. In the case of Factory Records, David Drennan remembers that they only asked for The Happy Mondays tapes and did not want any others. (see copy email ‘Dave Drennan’) Later I discovered that Factory Records had parted company with Joy Division/New Order. I felt that the tapes of Martin Hannett's work i.e. the ones he produced should not be destroyed. That is why I removed them from the skip and rescued them from landfill. When Warners were threatening court action I contacted Nick Turnbull (see copy email ‘Nick Turnbull’) who had been the owner of Strawberry Studios and who closed it down.

Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

    This is the way, Step inside: Understanding Joy Division Martin J. Power, Aileen Dillane and Eoin Devereux Joy Division On the 30th of July 1980, three musicians - Peter Hook, Steven Morris and Bernard Sumner - took to the small stage of The Beach Club at Oozits Bar in Shudehill, Manchester. With what might be best described as ‘gallows humour’, Sumner introduced the band as being the last surviving members of Crawling Chaos (New Order Net 2018).1 Their short set consisted of five songs. It must have been a particularly difficult gig for the musicians to play, as just eleven week’s earlier their close friend and Joy Division band-mate Ian Curtis had committed suicide on the eve of their first tour of the United States. Curtis’s unexpected death marked the premature end of one of the most important and most influential post-punk bands. Joy Division was no more. Strictly speaking, Joy Division existed for only two and a half years. Formed in Salford, over twenty-nine months the band wrote and recorded forty-three songs and played one hundred and twenty gigs (see Joy Division Official 2018). The 1976 punk explosion served as an initial catalyst for Sumner and Hook to form a band - temporarily called Stiff Kittens. This was soon followed by the adoption of the name Warsaw, inspired by David Bowie’s ‘Warszawa’ and further changes in membership. The final line up of Curtis (vocals); Hook (bass); Sumner (guitar, keys) and Morris (drums) performed and recorded as Warsaw in the second half of 1977. However, the existence of a punk band called Warsaw Pakt convinced them to change their name to avoid any confusion and in January 1978 they played their first ever gig under the name Joy Division.

    Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku.
