RESEÑAS .......................................................................... 315 Studia Philologica Valentina Vol. 17, n.s. 14 (2015) 5-6 ISSN: 1135-9560 PRESENTACIÓN En el ámbito de las ciencias y los saberes técnicos, así como en el conocimiento de otras disciplinas humanísticas, la lengua latina jugó durante siglos un papel fundamental como vehículo de transmisión en la cultura europea occidental. En efecto, con la importante base conceptual y formal, especialmente trasladada a un abundante caudal léxico, que le había proporcionado el grie- go ya en la Antigüedad, el latín fue adquiriendo progresivamente la condición de auténtica lengua común europea utilizada desde la Edad Media hasta la Ilustración. A consolidar esta condición contribuyó sin duda el hecho de que el latín fuera empleado para la traducción de textos científicos, labor que, aunque había sido iniciada ya en la Antigüedad, recibió como es sabido un nota- ble impulso en la Edad Media. De este modo la lengua de Roma se convirtió además en un instrumento aglutinador de culturas de primer orden, facilitando la transmisión en Europa del saber griego y árabe. Tantos siglos de uso y tan apropiada adecuación a la especificidad y la evolución de los distintos ámbitos del co- nocimiento facilitaron que naturalmente el latín dejara también su huella en la expresión científica e intelectual del mundo con- temporáneo. Aglutinando a la vez el peso de la tradición con una necesaria, y conseguida, adaptación a la evolución de los tiempos, la expresión latina –o grecolatina– del conocimiento confirió ade- más, especialmente a partir del Renacimiento, un gran impulso a la difusión de los saberes en lenguas vernáculas, prestando léxico, moldes de expresión (incluidos los que podríamos llamar géneros científico-literarios) y, por supuesto, conceptos. Con estas ideas como base se presentan los trabajos aquí re- unidos, que ejemplifican ese papel del latín y del griego desde la Antigüedad hasta nuestros días. La atención al latín técnico anti- guo se ha centrado en la Agrimensura y la Náutica, mientras que la pervivencia de la Historia Natural, y más específicamente de la Zoología, ha ocupado el artículo sobre Isidoro de Sevilla, cuyas Etimologías constituyen en la Antigüedad Tardía el mejor ejemplo de transmisión textual y léxica. Tres trabajos se agrupan en tor- no a la que podría ser considerada la ciencia por excelencia en la Edad Media y el Renacimiento: la Medicina, a la que van ligadas disciplinas afines como la Fitoterapia o la Fisiognomía. 6 CONCEPCIÓN FERRAGUT Y MARÍA TERESA SANTAMARÍA La Filología, bíblica en este caso, constituye el tema del parecer que sobre el orientalista Guillaume Postel y su participación en la Políglota emitirá Benito Arias Montano, responsable de esta magna empresa editorial. El estudio de la impronta dejada por las letras humanistas en la Elocuencia, tan vinculada a todos los campos del saber desde la Antigüedad, el pensamiento religioso o la erudi- ción histórica, se encarna en las figuras del jesuita francés Martin Du Cygne y del intelectual valenciano Mariano Madramany. Latín y griego convergen también en la transmisión del conocimiento gracias al interés despertado por la literatura historiográfica latina en el mundo erudito griego entre los siglos XVII-XIX, tema al que se dedica otro de los trabajos que presentamos en el volumen. Pan- dora y su «caja» ocupan el espacio reservado a Tradición clásica, con un detallado estudio de su interpretación en la literatura y en otras formas de expresión artística. El último artículo se adentra en la Historia de la Música y en la deuda que el nuevo «arte de los ruidos» nacido en el futurismo contrajo con la música y las artes escénicas de la antigua Grecia. No podemos dejar de dar las gracias a los autores de los artí- culos por haber querido colaborar en este volumen con sus con- tribuciones, y a los veinticuatro revisores de las mismas por su minuciosa lectura y oportunas observaciones. Nuestra voluntad al reunir estas aportaciones ha sido mostrar, una vez más, que el latín, cargado de tradición y acompañado casi siempre de la lengua griega, es un excepcional elemento de comunidad cultu- ral europea.     A First Century Peshitta Manuscript, Dated and Signed! William Cureton (1808 – 17 June 1864) was an English Orientalist , born in Westbury, Shropshire . After being educated at the Adams' Grammar School in Newport, Shropshire and at Christ Church, Oxford , he took orders in 1832, became chaplain of Christ Church, sublibrarian of the Bodleian , and, in 1837, assistant keeper of manuscripts in the British Museum . Cureton became best known for his discovery of an old Syriac (Aramaic) manuscript of the four Gospels na med after him - the Curetonian manuscript. In 1845, he wrote the following: These comments piqued my curiosity, especially the second one in the footnote. I did a little research and found the source h e named by J. S. Assemani- Bibliotheca Orientalis, Vol . II, p. 486. There are online editions of the books available, however the text is written mostly in Latin and has some Syriac Aramaic as well. Syriac is no problem for me to read and translate; Latin is another matter, so I found a good Latin translation web site and managed, I think, to translate the Latin text involved.   • A Textual and Contextual Analysis of the Hebrew Gospels Translated from Catalan
    A TEXTUAL AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE HEBREW GOSPELS TRANSLATED FROM CATALAN Pere Casanellas and Harvey J. Hames* ABSTRACT: THe first extant translation of the four Gospels into Hebrew is to be found in a late fifteentH-century manuscript kept in the Vatican Library (Vat. ebr. 100). THe study of this manuscript Has to date been rather HapHazard and very little Has been written about it. Delcor argued in 1981 that it was probably translated from Catalan and suggested that tHe translator was a Jew, probably writing at the end of tHe fifteenth-century or the start of the sixteenth-century. In this article we attempt to demonstrate that the manuscript is a copy of the original fourteenth or fifteentH century translation. It was indeed based on a Catalan translation of the Gospels, specifically, the so-called “Bíblia del segle XIV,” whicH is to be publisHed in the Corpus Biblicum Catalanicum. THere are small but significant Hints tHat the translator was a Jew writing for a JewisH audience, in order to provide them with knowledge of these core Christian texts (possibly to Help them to undermine CHristian polemicists). However, the possibility also exists that this translation was carried out by a converso for others who, in tHe aftermath of 1391 and the Tortosa disputation, Had converted or were considering conversion, in order to inform them about their new faith. 1. Muslims may not exist today and the Jews may be few, only those who survived the concentration camps, but the city did not throw off this part of the identity. Today, there are four mosques, three of them very well preserved, while the Jewish synagogue, built in 1826, continues to exist and be the largest and most beautiful of the surviving religious buildings of the Greek Jews.

    ABSTRACT The Revival of Political Hesychasm in Greek Orthodox Thought: A Study of the Hesychast Basis of the Thought of John S. Romanides and Christos Yannaras Daniel Paul Payne, B.A., M.Div. Mentor: Derek H. Davis, Ph.D. In the 1940s Russian émigré theologians rediscovered the ascetic-theology of St. Gregory Palamas. Palamas’s theology became the basis for an articulation of an Orthodox theological identity apart from Roman Catholic and Protestant influences. In particular the “Neo-Patristic Synthesis” of Fr. Georges Florovsky and the appropriation of Palamas’s theology by Vladimir Lossky set the course for future Orthodox theology in the twentieth century. Their thought had a direct influence upon the thought of Greek theologians John S. Romanides and Christos Yannaras in the late twentieth century. Each of these theologians formulated a political theology using the ascetic-theology of Palamas combined with the Roman identity of the Greek Orthodox people. Both of these thinkers called for a return to the ecclesial-communal life of the late Byzantine period as an alternative to the secular vision of the modern West. The resulting paradigm developed by their thought has led to the formation of what has been called the “Neo- Orthodox Movement.” Essentially, what the intellectual and populist thinkers of the movement have expressed in their writings is “political hesychasm.” Romanides and Yannaras desire to establish an Orthodox identity that separates the Roman aspect from the Hellenic element of Greek identity. The Roman identity of the Greek people is the Orthodox Christian element removed from the pagan Hellenism, which, as they argue, the Western powers imposed on the Greek people in the establishment of the modern nation-state of Greece in 1821.

Introduction Even before the Fall of Constantinople (1453), many Latin works have been translated in Greek and Modern Greek language.1 This translative tradition continues in the post-Byzantine era; many scholars with deep knowledge of Latin language and literature are engaged in writing in Latin as well as in translating Latin texts.2 In this paper we will focus our attention especially in translations of Latin historiography. The Construction of National Time Just as the writing of modern history developed within the context of national historiography since the nineteenth century, so the concept of “nation” has become one of the essential categories through which the imagination of space and the notion of time are constructed.1 This is the tradition and the institutional environment within which contemporary historians conduct their research and write their texts, reconstructing and reinforcing the structures of power that they experience.
