Last but not least, I would like to thank Vivienne Lau who has been a great source of inspiration. 3 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to examine if Hong Kong residents’ social identity affects their attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists. Thus, understanding how the role of social identity amongst residents is vital for sustainable tourism development. Mainland Chinese tourists are vital to Hong Kong’s tourism industry as they are the largest source of visitors. However, due to the growing political influence of Mainland China and the influx of Mainland Chinese tourists, the city of Hong Kong is losing its identity and uniqueness. From this, many Hong Kong residents have little sense of social/national identity as they are sceptical of belonging to a nation. The literature review presents three key areas of study: sustainable tourism development, resident’s attitude towards tourism development, and social identity. The literature finds that the dimensions of environmental integrity, economic prosperity, and sociocultural impacts are all vital to the success of Hong Kong’s sustainable tourism development. Also, the intrinsic, extrinsic and sociodemographic factors could influence Hong Kong resident’s attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists. Furthermore, the role of social identity delves into in-group and out-group identities between Hong Kong residents and Mainland Chinese tourists. As well as how perceived cultural distance affects Hong Kong resident’s attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists. The study adopts a qualitative research approach alongside a phenomenological methodology to understand and interpret individual experiences as a source of qualitative evidence. To gather the qualitative data, the study used semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. Furthermore, a qualitative coding strategy was implemented within the study’s interviews to highlight key themes of study including: sustainable tourism development, resident’s attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists, social identity and perceived cultural distance. Overall, a total of 12 in-depth interviews were gathered for qualitative analysis using the snowball sampling technique. Overall, the study sheds light on whether Hong Kong resident’s social identity affects their attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists. Many Hong Kong resident’s recognised the economic prosperity of Mainland Chinese tourists. However, there exist growing concerns of sustainable tourism development in Hong Kong, with aspects of sociocultural interaction as well as the urban and rural environments. Also, it was found that Hong Kong residents who identified themselves as ‘Hong Kongese’ were more likely to have a negative attitude towards Mainland Chinese tourists compared to those who identified themselves as Chinese. With perceived cultural distance being an actual source of social identity depending on Hong Kong residents’ acceptance of Chinese culture. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1.     HONG KONG COUNTRY OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION Electric, eclectic, energizing, nonstop, traditional, cosmopolitan, international; there are so many words to describe Hong Kong, one simply has to visit to experience it all. Hong Kong was a British colony from the mid-19th century until 1997 when China resumed sovereignty. The city now operates as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) under China’s ‘one country – two rule system.’ A haven for consumerists, Hong Kong offers some of the best shopping anywhere in the world. The infrastructure is modern and developed which makes getting around easy. On top of that, because of the city’s long history with the western world, English is spoken everywhere making Hong Kong a relatively easy destination to visit compared to other parts of China. 2 ABOUT HONG KONG LANDSCAPE Hong Kong is located at the delta of the Pearl River on China’s Southeast coast. The city is made up of Hong Kong island, and several areas on the mainland peninsula known as Kowloon and the New Territories. In total, the land area is over 1100 km2. CLIMATE Hong Kong enjoys a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. It is most likely to rain during the summer months (June, July, August) and this is, therefore, the low travel season. The most popular seasons to visit are Spring with mild temperatures and only occasional rain and autumn which is usually sunny and dry. PEOPLE There are approximately 7.3 million people living in Hong Kong, 95% of whom are of Chinese descent (Mainly Canton people).

Public spaces that include food are most appealing and attract people to urban landscape. Reflecting the intangible cultural heritage of a destination, consuming local food is an authentic experience for tourists, providing a link between food, place and tourism (Privitera and Nesci 2015). Researchers have found that satisfying food tourism experiences can boost tourists’ overall perception of a destination (Smith and Xiao 2008). As a result, local food has regularly been used by governments to promote their cities. Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) believes that the diversity of the city’s international cuisines has become a major competitive advantage (Enright and Newton 2005). The gastronomic image of Hong Kong is enhanced by food festivals, competition such as the Best of the Best Culinary Awards, and trade shows.

    A research of lived experience on commuting by bus in Hong Kong Lau Wai In, Debbie 1. Hong Kong and Transportation The people’s daily commute in Hong Kong mostly only takes half an hour to one hour. More than half of the Hong Kong people rely on public transportation for their trips on weekdays (Transport Department, 2011). According to the Transport Department, only around 14 percent of the households had private cars available for their uses. Public transportation shares a big part of daily life for most local people, ranging from children to the elderly. It connects every district of Hong Kong, making the local trips much more convenient. Apart from the heavy reliance on commuting, there is even a particular group of people who share their mania over public transport. In Hong Kong, there are terms called “bus plastic” (baa1 gaau1) and “train plastic” (tit3 gaau1), which commonly describe people who have an unusual and extreme interest in bus and MTR. It raises several questions in my mind. Why do Hong Kong people insist to take public transport in their everyday life? What does public transport mean to Hong Kong people? Are they just a machine or something far more complicated? Conventionally, passengers taking public transportation are seen as a passive subject comparing with walking and cycling, as there are fewer motions while being carried by the vehicles and lack of willingness to pursue their purposes (Scheldeman, 2011, p.129). This kind of perspective is rather applicable to me since I seldom enjoy my trips on public transport.
