Hong Kong was a British colony from the mid-19th century until 1997 when China resumed sovereignty. The city now operates as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) under China’s ‘one country – two rule system.’ A haven for consumerists, Hong Kong offers some of the best shopping anywhere in the world. The infrastructure is modern and developed which makes getting around easy. On top of that, because of the city’s long history with the western world, English is spoken everywhere making Hong Kong a relatively easy destination to visit compared to other parts of China. 2 ABOUT HONG KONG LANDSCAPE Hong Kong is located at the delta of the Pearl River on China’s Southeast coast. The city is made up of Hong Kong island, and several areas on the mainland peninsula known as Kowloon and the New Territories. In total, the land area is over 1100 km2. CLIMATE Hong Kong enjoys a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. It is most likely to rain during the summer months (June, July, August) and this is, therefore, the low travel season.     PRESS STATEMENT 13 November 2019 MTR Unable to Provide Normal Services Due to Repeated Vandalism by Rioters The MTR network and facilities have been repeatedly vandalised over the past several days. A total of seven rail lines were affected today (13 November 2019) and train service on some of the lines had to be fully or partially suspended. Furthermore, seven stations were forced to close as station facilities were maliciously damaged or operations were disrupted. A large number of commuters all over Hong Kong was adversely affected because of these incidents. The MTR Corporation strongly condemns the rioters’ acts which endangered the safety of passengers, MTR staff and railway operations. The Corporation has reported the cases to the Police and reserves the right to take legal action against the parties concerned. After the end of service hours yesterday, rioters broke into several closed stations to set fires and vandalise trains, stations and trackside equipment. On the East Rail Line, there were arson attacks that targeted two trains stabled at Sheung Shui Station and a train stabled at University Station. Another train stabled at Mong Kok East Station was also damaged. In addition, a track-side signaling equipment room near Fo Tan was attacked. Considering these stations had already been damaged during the day yesterday, the Corporation had no choice but to suspend the train service of the East Rail Line from the start of traffic hours today. Following recovery efforts by engineering personnel, train service between Hung Hom and Tai Wai stations resumed at around 5pm with trains by-passing Kowloon Tong Station.

    2nd September 2014 Wan Chai District Council Information Paper Food and Environmental Hygiene Committee Paper No.30/2014 Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Anti-mosquito Campaign 2014 (Phase III) in Wan Chai District Purpose The purpose of this paper is to brief Members of the details and arrangements for the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2014 (Phase III) to be launched by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) in Wan Chai District. Background 2. The Anti-mosquito Campaign 2014 (Phase II) organized by FEHD was launched between 28.4.2014 and 4.7.2014. Actions taken in the district and the results are detailed at Annex I . 3. Last year, there were two local, three imported and one unclassified Japanese encephalitis cases, 103 imported dengue fever cases and 5 imported chikungunya fever cases in Hong Kong. On the other hand, one local Japanese encephalitis case had been reported in June this year. In order to safeguard public health and to sustain anti-mosquito efforts, FEHD will continue to strengthen mosquito control and organize the Anti-mosquito Campaign 2014 (Phase III) for eight consecutive weeks from 18.8.2014 to 10.10.2014. 4. The Anti-mosquito Campaign 2014 (Phase III) to be carried out under - 1 - the slogan “ Prevent Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue Fever Act Now! ” aims to achieve the following objectives - (a) To heighten public awareness of the potential risk of dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya fever and other mosquito-borne diseases; (b) To encourage community participation and forge close partnership of government departments concerned in anti-mosquito work; and (c) To eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites .
