KIDS4KIDS CHILDREN'S BOOK DRIVE THIS APRIL

Starting April 1st, the AWA will be collecting English children's books for Cooking and eating Kids4Kids. It's a great opportunity to get involved. Not only are we looking for donations, but also volunteers to establish collection points throughout Hong Kong. Will your building allow a professionally designed collection box to be put up for the month of April? Kids4Kids will have them all ready. The more we can put up, the easier it will be to get donations. Please email Susie Edrington at [email protected] to support this great cause.

Jungle Living

By Simeen Lubin

CONTEMPLATING MOVING to Hong Kong back in 2015, I imagined it just like you - skyscrapers, restaurants and bars, shopping malls and, alas, lots of people! However, much to our surprise, we found something quite different in Clearwater Bay. Instead of skyscrapers, we opted for a village house; instead of modern, western restaurants and funky bars, we choose a community with local restaurants displaying enormous fish in murky water outside shop windows, enticing us to taste their wares! We traded communal swimming pools and downstairs play areas for a private garden and a 200-metre long driveway with no lights, surrounded by a ‘jungle’! And, of course, with the `jungle’ came insects. Oh yes, scores of insects. In our first few months, we experienced bewildering moments of both awe and fright. A large gap in our front door

From daily centipede visits to bright green beetles and spiders that jumped before you had time to let out a scream to king size cockroaches that in my opinion belonged in museums for their size, every day was exciting. Stepping outside into our garden, we were visually assaulted by a side of nature we had never encountered before. Butterflies with fluorescent colours, birds with fork- shaped tails and red and white underbellies, eagles that swooped dangerously close and made you instinctively clutch your handbag a little bit tighter, and bees with fat, round bodies and wings like a butterfly; you name it we saw it.
