2014 St George’s, Nailsworth celebrates the important event of the installation of its new organ and it is an honour to be invited to be part of the celebrations associated with this milestone. Back in 1975 I produced my ‘Anglican History of Nailsworth’. At the time I was only sixteen and my little pamphlet was the fruition of a childhood love, both for Nailsworth and its fascinating history. It seems strange today to be re-visiting the history of St George’s almost forty years later. Sadly I have not had time to re-dig through the huge quantity of parish records now that they are deposited in Gloucestershire Archives. This time I have decided to root my research in the essay entitled ‘Nailsworth From 1500 to 1900’ by A.B. Pavey Smith, son of A.E. Smith who was the first churchwarden of St George’s, and I have quoted extensively from his publication. In addition I have some of my own notes from long ago including summaries of documents held by the Church Commissioners, where I worked for a time in 1979. Other principal sources include the Victoria County History; ‘Gloucestershire – The Cotswolds’ by David Verey and Alan Brooks; the Borough Guide from the 1900s; ‘A Portrait of Nailsworth’ by Betty Mills; Crockford’s Directories; Kelly’s Directories; the parish histories by compiled by Rudkin and Arthur Twisden Playne; the histories of the nonconformist churches in Nailsworth together with Roy Close’s very useful ‘A Village of Parts’. The illustrations have come in the main from Nailsworth Archives. Emily Guerry’s beautiful tribute to ‘A Last Supper’ has been used together with the biography of Frederick Bligh Bond by Tim Hopkinson-Ball, correspondence with Sir Oliver Heywood and Robin Sharp’s ‘All About Elcombe’. St George’s played a huge part during my formative years. I was a pupil at the Nailsworth Church of England Primary School from 1963 to 1966. Becoming involved with church at the age of eight I came under the influence of Peter Walker and his untimely death in 1970 resulted in the shedding of many tears. His successor, John Lewis, was enormously influential too and in many ways I feel that my own vocation to the priesthood was shaped by the ministries of both of these vicars and I am thankful to both of them. Conscious of this and of the kindness of so many members of the congregation when I was a youth it gives me tremendous pleasure to write these words in appreciation. When the present parish church was under construction it was decided to re-install it ‘temporarily’ until funds were

The Village and Community Agents scheme, managed by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council, had worked across the county helping thousands of older people and communities gain better access to services, information and assistance. However, now the Village and Community Agents have combined with the GP Social Prescribing scheme to become a new service called Community Wellbeing Agents and many former Agents have transferred to the new scheme. There are various Community Wellbeing providers in Gloucestershire. In this area, The Independence Trust has been commissioned to offer the service in Stroud & Berkeley Vale and now in our local Primary Care Network (PCN), the Stroud Cotswold Network (SCN) .The Social Prescribing scheme is free and confidential for anyone over the age of 16.

    General Synod Safeguarding presentation from Bishop of Gloucester, Rachel Treweek, February 2018 I’m aware that when we talk about safeguarding it engages our hearts, our minds and our guts, and depending on our own experiences, our antennae will be set at different angles. So I hope that in our time of questions there will be opportunity for people to clarify what they’ve heard. I have been asked to say something brief about the Diocese of Gloucester and I look forward to contributing more in response to questions. It was not long after I arrived in Gloucester that Peter Ball, a previous Bishop of Gloucester was finally convicted of horrific abuse - You have the Gibb report (GS Misc. 1172). As I have previously said publicly, I am deeply ashamed of that legacy and deeply sorry; just as I am deeply ashamed and sorry about the abuse people have suffered across the Church which has so often been compounded by wholly inadequate response and a lack of compassion and understanding… .. I do believe that in the present I have the privilege of working with a committed and professional team in Gloucester. And that is not intended to sound defensive. The starting place is the big picture of the good news of the Kingdom of God and the truth that every person is a unique individual with a name, made in the image of God.     Woodchester Parish Design Statement The Design Statement describes the visual qualities and features of the Parish, as seen through the eyes of local residents. It sets out the key qualities of the Parish environment and the local values put upon them. It seeks to inspire future development that can respect and enhance the unique character of Woodchester. I believe the production of this document will show how people and their locally elected representatives can get more involved in planning for their areas. This is the essence of the Government’s Big Society ambitions. A good planning system is essential for the economy, environment and society. It represents a genuine opportunity for the local community to influence the future of the place where they live. As such, it can be considered an important initial step towards genuine neighbourhood planning, as proposed in the recently passed Localism Act. It will assist the delivery of good and informed contemporary designs that will be in harmony with the environment and local community aspirations. It should enable local people to exercise influence as well as inform the District Council’s planning policies and decisions. This work, I believe, can make a real difference to Woodchester. Finally, the community work within this Design Statement will enhance the understanding between the District Council, the local community, designers, and developers, in a meaningful and collaborative way.     The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek Our ref: DB/10/20 Bishop of Gloucester The Bishops’ Office 13 October 2020 2 College Green, Gloucester, GL1 2LR [email protected] Tel: 01452 835511 Dear Sisters and Brothers Last week the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, IICSA, published its overarching investigation report into the Anglican Church in England and Wales, highlighting the failures of the Church of England regarding child sexual abuse. It is not comfortable reading, and neither should it be. This report brings together in one place the shocking failures of the Church, not least in often being more concerned with protecting reputation than focusing on the care of victims and survivors of abuse and responding with compassion. In many ways the sickening findings of this report come as no surprise given the content of the 2017 Gibb report investigating the Church’s response to Peter Ball’s abuse, followed in 2019 by the IICSA report on Peter Ball. I spoke out with lament and shame following these publications and now this final IICSA report highlights our failure as a Church to respond swiftly to some of the key recommendations made, which have been repeatedly voiced by victims and survivors of abuse. Listening, admittance of failure and expression of shock and sorrow are important but they are not enough. Action is required. Therefore, while I am glad that the report acknowledges significant changes which have been made over the years, it also shines a bright light on the systemic failures of governance structures and decision-making.
