Nacque il 7 dicembre del 1903 e morì il 12 gennaio del 1960). Di una famiglia di nove figli, inizialmente vivente a Montévideo e poi a Bahia Blanca, Cayetano Di Sarli cominciò studiando la musica classica al conservatorio dove insegnava uno dei suoi fratelli. Suo padre, Miguel Di Sarli, italiano, aveva avuto tre figli da un primo matrimonio mentre dal secondo , con Serafina Russomano, sorella del tenore Tito Russomano, ne ebbe altri 6, José, Miguel, Nicolás, Domingo, Cayetano y Roque, gli ultimi due nati a Bahia Blanca. A 13 anni, con grande disperazione di suo padre, si integra in un gruppo di "Zarzuela" per girare in varie provincie dell’argentina suonando musica popolare (e qualche tango). Suona anche da solo nei cinema e nelle sale da tè, particolarmente a Santa Rosa, provincia di La Pampa, in un cinema, proprietà di un amico di suo padre, italiano come lui , Mario Manara. In seguito ad un incidente, al giovane Carlos Di Sarli si compromette gravemente la vista, non diventa cieco, ma dovrà portare continuamente degli occhiali neri per tutta la vita e questo gli causerà moltissime e immaginabili difficoltà. Crea nel 1919, a Bahia Blanca, la sua città natale, la sua prima orchestra. Là scrive e suona il suo primo tango "Méditación" che… ahi noi non è mai stato registrato. Nel 1923, giunge a Buenos Aires in compagnia di suo fratello Rocco, e si lega col musicista Alberico Spatola, direttore della “Banda de la policia” di Buenos Aires e parente dei Di Sarli che lo ingaggia insieme al bandoneonista Anselmo Aieta per integrare il suo gruppo. In seguito integra una formazione molto popolare diretta dal violinista Juan Pedro Castillo, soprannominato "el Rey del pizzicato". Poi suona nel trio di Alejandro Scarpino, il felice autore del tango "Canaro in París", accompagna nelle "grabaciones" (registrazioni) per la casa editrice Electra l’attrice e cantante Olinda Bozán, sorella maggiore di Sofia, più conosciuta. Nel 1923, grazie al suo amico Cobian, entra nella formazione di Osvaldo Fresedo che influenzerà enormemente il suo stile, e a cui dedicherà del resto una delle sue più celebri composizioni: "Milonguero Viejo." Il suo amico Juan Carlos Cobian infatti era il pianista dell'orchestra di Osvaldo Fresedo "el Pibe del Paternal" (il bambino del Paternal, un quartiere di Buenos Aires). Osvaldo Fresedo aveva in quel momento un successo tale che gestiva fino a cinque orchestre, una della quali sarebbe stata poi diretta da Carlos. La vita non fu gentile con Carlos Di Sarli: come già detto a cominciare dai suoi perenni occhiali neri; si racconta questo aneddoto: una sera, il proprietario del cabaret "Germinal" dove suonava, pretese che Carlos Di Sarli suonasse senza i suoi occhiali e a causa del rifiuto di questo ultimo, l’orchestra dovette abbandonare luogo e lavoro. Carlos Di Sarli crea, nel 1927, a solamente 24 anni, il proprio Sexteto. Era composto da: César Ginzo e Tito Landó come bandonéon, José Pécora e David Abramsky come violini e Adolfo Kraus come contrabbassista….. e ovviamente Carlos al pianoforte. Nel Dicembre del 1929, eccolo pronto per registrare i suoi primi due tanghi "Sexteto Di Sarli", sotto l'etichetta del marchio RCA-Victor. Nell'Agosto del 1931, registrò con la cantante Mercedes Carné, 22 canzoni dopo essere stato licenziato dalla RCA Victor: questi 22 pezzi offrono, a mio avviso un interesse abbastanza limitato, eccetto "El Rebelde". In seguito il gruppo suonò con grande successo fino al 1934, periodo in cui Carlos Di Sarli andò in altre formazioni, poi partì per Rosario, provincia di Santa Fé, dove fece parte di un piccolo gruppo col bandoneonista Juan Cambareri. Nel frattempo il Sexteto continuava a suonare senza Di Sarli ma mantenendo il suo nome, fino a che questa orchestra cambiò nome per chiamarsi Orquesta Novel, in seguito alle sue esibizioni nella confitería "Novelty." Nel 1935 Carlos Di Sarli fu invitato dai suoi vecchi musicisti a ri-suonare con loro , ma solamente per sostituire il pianista Ricardo Canataro che era malato. Fece anche parte, per un certo periodo di tempo, dell'orchestra di D’Arienzo, sempre come pianista, per sostituire Luis Visca. (era il tempo in cui l'orchestra di Arienzo si chiamava "D’Arienzo-Visca.”) Infine, ritornò con i suoi vecchi collaboratori per registrare, nel 1939 con la RCA e col cantante Roberto Rufino. Fu allora, tra il 1939 e il 1960, il suo periodo orchestrale più conosciuto è con il cantante Roberto Rufino, Carlos Di Sarli proseguì la sua strada fino all'anno 1948. Ecco la composizione di quella prima orchestra del 1939: piano e direzione: Carlos Di Sarli, violini: Roberto Guisado , Daniel Goicoechea e Adolfo Pérez; bandoneon: R.Gyanitelli, Domingo Sánchez e Alberto Mititieri, contrabbasso: Domingo Capurro, e come cantante provvisorio Ignacio Murillo che sarà presto sostituito da Roberto Rufino. Come già detto Di Sarli ebbe, fra il 39 e il 60, parecchie defezioni nelle sue orchestre che quindi ebbero moltissime formazioni diverse, citiamo per la cronaca la composizione della sua ultima: Carlos Di Sarli, piano e direzione, violini: Roberto Guisado, Elvino Vardaro, Simon Bajour (i tre migliori dell’epoca)… più A.Rouco, Carlos Anaiz, Juan Schiaffino, Claudio Gonzales, Antonio Rossi (dunque 8 violini), bandonéon: F.Verdi, Libertella,Plaza, Marcucci, Domingo Sánchez, (5 bandonéon), contrabbasso: Alfredo Sciaretta, cantante: Horacio Casares e Jorge Durán e per finire la presenza di Antonio Canto, come presentatore. I suoi cantanti. Durante gli anni del sestetto, i suoi cantanti (in ordine cronologico) furono Santiago Devin (Cenzi), Ernesto Famá, Fernando Díaz, Antonio Rodríguez Lesende, Roberto Arrieta e Ignacio Murillo. Con lo sviluppo dell’orchestra, a Murillo fece seguito Roberto Rufino, poi Antonio Rodríguez Lesende, Agustín Volpe, Carlos Acuña, Alberto Podestà, quindi ancora Roberto Rufino, poi di nuovo Alberto Podestà, Osvaldo Cabrera, Roberto Rufino per la terza volta, Alberto Podestà per un terza volta, Jorge Durán, Raúl Rosales, Alberto Podestà per la quarta volta, Osvaldo Cordo, Oscar Serpa, Mario Pomar, ancora una volta Oscar Serpa, Argentino Ledesma, Rodolfo Galé, Roberto Florio, e, infine, Jorge Durán ancora e Horacio Casares. L'orchestra di Di Sarli è un modello di tango classico, evidenziato da concezioni musicali di interessantissimo contenuto, che il suo direttore cercò sempre di superare. Godette , inoltre, dell'adesione appassionata di legioni di ammiratori che non ammettevano altra modalità strumentale che non fosse quella di cui era protagonista il Maestro. P.S. Fu chiesto al Maestro Osvaldo Pugliese : "Cosa pensa di Di Sarli ? " e lui rispose : " Io lo indico sempre come esempio. Senza nulla, creò una struttura tanghera molto difficile da uguagliare. Fu un continuatore di Fresedo al quale dedicò il tango "Milonguero viejo". Nella musica di Di Sarli non ci sono arrangiamenti né "variaciones" (per es. assoli di bandoneon) né armonizzazioni. Semplicemente con ritmo , melodia ed espressione ha fatto del tango una " poesia della città" , degna di essere ascoltata e ballata. I focus primarily on the work of a number of Argentine composers who went into political exile in the late 1970s and who continue to live abroad. Drawing on the ideas of Russian linguist Mikhail Bakhtin (concepts of dialogic relationships and polyvocality), I explore the creative mechanisms that allowed these and other artists to engage with a multiplicity of seemingly irreconcilable idioms within the framing concept of tango in order to accommodate their own musical needs and inquietudes. In addition, based on fieldwork conducted in Basel, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Gerona, Paris, and Rotterdam, I examine the mechanism through which musicians (some experienced tango players with longstanding ties with the genre, others young performers who have only recently fully embraced tango) engage with these new forms in order to revisit, create or reconstruct a sense of personal or communal identity through their performances and compositions. I argue that these novel expressions are recognized as tango not because of their melodies, harmonies or rhythmic patterns, but because of the ways these features are “musicalized” by the performers. I also argue that it is due to both the musical heterogeneity that shaped early tango expressions in Argentina and the primacy of performance practices in shaping the genre’s sound that contemporary artists have been able to approach tango as a vehicle capable of accommodating the new musical identities resulting from their socially diverse and diasporic realities.

    THE BANDONEÓN By Eduardo Lazarowski “Each 11 of July is celebrated as the National Day of the Bandoneón as homage to the birthday of Aníbal Troilo” … Thus read a headline on a major Argentine newspaper on July 2014. Neither Troilo’s name nor the instrument that contributed to his rising as one of the greatest personalities in tango history are foreign words to tango dancers around the world. But not many tango lovers know the history of the “tango wind box”. So, let’s examine the major technical and historic features of the instrument considered the “soul” of tango music. The bandoneón was invented to substitute the otherwise expensive and not always available church organs in rural communities of north Germany around 1835. Technically, the bandoneón is a portable wind instrument that belongs to the subgroup of “aero-phones” together with the accordion and the concertina, and it is played by depressing a series of buttons (keys) capriciously distributed on the surface of its two side panels. Opening and closing the blower produce the vibration of metal wedges. Professional tango musicians use the so-called achromatic bandoneón, which produce different notes (by the same key) during the opening and closing of the instrument. A standard modern bandoneón has 71 keys (38 and 33 on the right and left panels, respectively), generating 142 voices. The bandoneón owes its name to its inventor, Heinrich Band and the cooperative (Union) created to financially Maestro Julian Hasse performing in Durham NC support its manufacturing. Thus, when the instrument arrived to Buenos Aires, it was phonetically called by its trade-mark label “Band-Union” and the voice soon mutated from bandunión to bandoneón.

He first learnt violin, like his brothers, and then studied piano in local music conservatories. As a teenager, his music accompanied silent films, his professional career beginning in a bar called “Café de la Chancha”.64 Later, he worked as a replacement musician in a number of dance orchestras and then joined the ensemble led by legendary Paquita Bernardo65, where he met violinist Elvino Vardaro, with whom he would later form the Vardaro-Pugliese sextet in 1929. The ensemble was disbanded due to lack of commercial success, but was reformed with a new line-up in 1930, including such luminaries as Alfredo Gobbi on second violin, and with Aníbal Troilo and Ciriaco Ortiz on bandoneon. By the time Pugliese assembled his own orchestra in 1939, he was already a professional pianist of renown who had collaborated with the most outstanding figures and ensembles of the time: Enrique Pollet’s66 sextet, and the orchestras conducted by Pedro Laurenz67, Miguel Caló68 and Pedro Maffia69. He produced his most refined works with his orquesta típica, to which he was devoted exclusively until he died. We will give special attention to this ensemble.

    ARGENTINE TANGO, ITS ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION By Eduardo Lazarowski Tango is one of the most beautiful, elegant, and sensual dance of modern times. It has its origins in South America on both sides of the Rio de la Plata, whih separates the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires (and its city-port by the same name) from Uruguay and its capital Montevideo. By 1870-1880, waves of immigrants mainly from Italy, but also from Spain, England, and central-eastern Europe, arrived to the ports of Buenos Aires and Montevideo attracted by the prospect of jobs. Cultures and dialects mixed at the Sunday parties of the poor in the suburban neighborhoods, where waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, and habaneras blended with black candombes and gaucho’s tonadas. Tango was born as a dance and music of the lower class, but gradually metamorphosed into a sensual, elegant dance that conquered Buenos Aires society and the rest of the world. The details of when, where, and how Tango happened are elusive. Technically speaking, tango was born around 1900, when well-structured compositions of a style definitively different from the habanera and other popular tunes were written for first time on the pentagram.
