    How Many “Lincoln Bibles”? GORDON LEIDNER In a 1940 edition of Lincoln Lore, editor and historian Dr. Louis A. War- ren stated that “no book could be more appropriately associated with Abraham Lincoln than the Bible,” and he briefly introduced his read- ers to nine “Historic Lincoln Bibles” that he thought should be linked with the sixteenth president.1 Eleven years later, Robert S. Barton, son of the Lincoln biographer Rev. William E. Barton, published a paper titled “How Many Lincoln Bibles?”2 In it, Barton updated the status of Warren’s nine historic Lincoln Bibles, then added three Bibles he thought should also be associated with the 16th president. This list of a dozen Lincoln Bibles has not been critiqued or updated since that time, 1951. But a few significant discoveries, particularly in the past decade, justify a fresh look at this subject. In this article I update the status of the twelve previously identified historic Lincoln Bibles, discuss which Bibles Lincoln used while presi- dent, and introduce four previously unidentified Bibles that should be added to this list. One of these “new” Bibles may have been used by Lincoln’s mother to teach him how to read when he was a child, and another was probably read by Lincoln when he was president. These sixteen Bibles are shown in the table. The first twelve are presented in the order that Warren and Barton discussed them.     LINCOLN MILL HISTORY Below is a summary of what I know about the Lincoln mills. The last of these structures stands on property we own. Early Years In the very late 1600s an impoundment later known as Hunter’s Pond or the Mordecai Lincoln Road Pond was created by constructing a dam at the mouth of Bound Brook. The current mill structure was built next to this pond. The mill site straddles the patent line agreed upon in 1639 as the boundary between the former Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth Colonies. South of the line is the Town of Scituate, founded in 1636. North is the Town of Cohasset. Cohasset was settled in 1670, though it was formerly part of Hingham. It became a separate town in 1770 and was part of Suffolk County until 1793 when it became part of Norfolk County. Prior to 1695 there was no dam or road over Bound Brook. Instead a little distance downstream from the current road location, at a point pushing into the Gulph River estuary, people forded back and forth between Scituate and Beechwood. See the map below. I got there, and I climbed up the huge marble steps to his statue. And I looked east across the National Mall, past the Washington Monument, past the Capitol building. I had actually planned for the opening of this episode to go there before the day started, before the thousands of visitors showed up, while it was still quiet -- and to read part of the Gettysburg Address or the Second Inaugural, which are both carved into the stone on the inner walls of the monument. But when I got there, it was just so peaceful. I changed my mind and I decided to just stand quietly by this huge statue and to look out -- just the same way his eyes look out from between the pillars -- to watch the pink spring sunrise. I had words of his that were just running over and over through my head, but they weren't the soaring prose of either of those famous speeches. They were just these simple four lines of a tiny poem that he wrote when he was a little boy. And the poem goes: 'Abraham Lincoln. His hand and his pen. He will be good, but God knows when.' FINDING STORIES ABOUT YOUR ANCESTORS There are many ways to find stories to help you better understand and relate to your ancestors and their families. These include: 1. Get stories from relatives. Start by contacting and asking for the chance to talk to your older relatives about what they remember about their parents. Grandparents, and other relatives. Oral interviews are great, but often require some preparation and techniques for stimulating memories. You should record these conversations since note taking is often distracting. You may find that you need to start with your memories to prime the pump to get the relative starting in reminiscing.
