Participatory Propaganda Model 1
A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 1 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Alicia Wanless Michael Berk Director of Strategic Communications, Visiting Research Fellow, SecDev Foundation Centre for Cyber Security and International [email protected] Relations Studies, University of Florence [email protected] Paper presented at the "Social Media & Social Order, Culture Conflict 2.0" conference organized by Cultural Conflict 2.0 and sponsored by the Research Council of Norway on 1 December 2017, Oslo. To be published as part of the conference proceedings in 2018. A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 2 Abstract Existing research on aspects of propaganda in a digital age tend to focus on isolated techniques or phenomena, such as fake news, trolls, memes, or botnets. Providing invaluable insight on the evolving human-technology interaction in creating new formats of persuasive messaging, these studies lend to an enriched understanding of modern propaganda methods. At the same time, the true effects and magnitude of successful influencing of large audiences in the digital age can only be understood if target audiences are perceived not only as ‘objects’ of influence, but as ‘subjects’ of persuasive communications as well. Drawing from vast available research, as well as original social network and content analyses conducted during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, this paper presents a new, qualitatively enhanced, model of modern propaganda – “participatory propaganda” - and discusses its effects on modern democratic societies. Keywords: propaganda, Facebook, social network analysis, content analysis, politics A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 3 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Rapidly evolving information communications technologies (ICTs) have drastically altered the ways individuals engage in the public information domain, including news ways of becoming subjected to external influencing. -

Avaaz 10Th Nov 2017
Supplementary submission to the CMA on the proposed Fox/Sky merger Avaaz 10th Nov 2017 To assist the CMA further with its Phase II assessment of the proposed Fox/Sky merger, Avaaz submits: A. A comment on Sky’s statement that the continuation of Sky News cannot be assumed if the merger does not proceed. CMA guidelines indicate that this scenario should not be the basis for the CMA’s assessment, unless Sky can show that this statement reflects an outcome that was likely before the merger was contemplated. Additionally, if the merger is permitted, based on this misleading counterfactual, the merged entity might well then restart Sky News, or a similar news channel in a way that is similar to The Sun on Sunday replacing the News of the World. B. New evidence, and suggestions for CMA follow-up, on Fox News’ lack of compliance with UK broadcasting standards. Ofcom just found that Fox News failed to implement its own 15th May 2017 compliance policy, broadcasting a programme -
Media Matters For America
Supplementary Memo To: Ms. Anne Lambert and the CMA Inquiry group From: Media Matters for America Date: 9 November 2017 Re: Proposed acquisition by 21st Century Fox of Sky PLC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Media Matters for America would like to bring the following developments and considerations to the CMA Inquiry group’s attention to supplement evidence highlighted in our 24 October 2017 submission and the 27 October 2017 hearing for third party informants. These further demonstrate that: 1. There is an identifiable link between 21st Century Fox’s (21C Fox) poor corporate governance and what is broadcast on the news outlets it owns, especially Fox News; 2. The Murdochs and their news outlets continue to exploit the lack of regulatory infrastructure regarding broadcast standards in the U.S. to meddle in politics; 3. The “news”/”non-news” distinction remains insufficient when assessing 21C Fox’s commitment to broadcasting objectives; 4. The closure of Sky News is not -
Megyn Kelly Speaks out Against Bill O'reilly, Fox News
Megyn Kelly speaks out against Bill O'Reilly, Fox News money.cnn.com/2017/10/23/media/megyn-kelly-bill-oreilly-fox-news/index.html by Tom Kludt Bill O'Reilly is going on the offensive to defend himself after the latest bombshell about sexual harassment allegations against him. But his former Fox News colleague Megyn Kelly isn't having it. Kelly, speaking during her new one-hour block on the "Today" show, addressed a story published by the New York Times over the weekend which revealed that O'Reilly had paid $32 million to a former Fox News analyst who accused him of sexual harassment. "O'Reilly calls the Times report a malicious smear, claiming that no women in 20 years ever complained to human resources or legal about him," Kelly said. "Maybe that is true. Fox News was not exactly a friendly environment for harassment victims who wanted to report, in my experience. However, O'Reilly's suggestion that no one ever complained about his behavior is false. I know because I complained." Mark Fabiani, a representative for O'Reilly, responded to CNN by sending a pair of thank you notes that Kelly had sent O'Reilly. In one, Kelly expressed gratitude to O'Reilly for attending her baby shower. The other was sent to thank O'Reilly for plugging a book written by Kelly's husband, Douglas Brunt. Later on Monday morning, during an appearance on Glenn Beck's radio program, O'Reilly asked Beck to read the notes to the audience. "I don't know why Megyn Kelly is doing what she's doing," O'Reilly told Beck. -

How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)
How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must) The World According to ANN COULTER How to Talk to a Liberal Historically, the best way to convert liberals is to have them move out of their parents' home, get a job, and start paying taxes. But if this doesn't work, you might have to actually argue with a liberal. This is not for the faint of heart. It is important to remember that when arguing with liberals, you are always within inches of the "Arab street." Liberals traffic in shouting and demagogy. In a public setting, they will work themselves into a dervish-like trance and start incanting inanities: "BUSH LIED, KIDS DIED!" "RACIST!" "FASCIST!" "FIRE RUMSFELD!" "HALLIBURTON!" Fortunately, the street performers usually punch themselves out eventually and are taken back to their parents' house. Also resembling the Arab street, liberals are chock-full of conspiracy theories. They invoke weird personal obsessions like a conversational deus ex machina to trump all facts. You think you're talking about the war in Iraq and suddenly you start getting a disquisition on Nixon, oil, the neoconservatives, Vietnam (Tom Hayden discusses gang violence in Los Angeles as it relates to Vietnam), or whether Bill O'Reilly's former show, Inside Edition, won the Peabody or the Peanuckle Award. This is because liberals, as opposed to sentient creatures, have a finite number of memorized talking points, which they periodically try to shoehorn into unrelated events, such as when Nancy Pelosi opposed the first Gulf war in 1991 on the grounds that it would cause environmental damage in Kuwait. -

Case 1:19-cv-11294 Document 3 Filed 12/10/19 Page 1 of 31 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK BRITTANY MCHENRY, Plaintiff, Case Number: 1: 19-cv-11294 -against- COMPLAINT FOX NEWS NETWORK, LLC; FOX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP; NEWS JURY TRIAL DEMANDED CORPORATION; FOX CORPORATION; GEORGE MURDOCH (A/K/A “TYRUS”); JENNIFER RAUCHET; JOHN FINLEY; and MONICA MEKEEL, Defendants. Plaintiff BRITTANY MCHENRY, by and through her attorneys, The Bloom Firm, hereby files this Complaint against Defendants FOX NEWS NETWORK, LLC, FOX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP, NEWS CORPORATION, FOX CORPORATION (collectively “Fox News” or “Entity Defendants), GEORGE MURDOCH (a/k/a “TYRUS”), JENNIFER RAUCHET, JOHN FINLEY, and MONICA MEKEEL. Plaintiff alleges upon knowledge concerning her own experience and upon information and belief as to all other matters. I. OVERVIEW 1. After payouts of over $100 million in recent sexual harassment scandals, Fox News publiclyDeadline says it now has “zero tolerance" for sexual harassment. This is a dangerous lie. In practice, Fox News remains a sanctuary for sexual harassers, coddling and enabling the men who abuse female employees. Even in 2019, Fox News' actions demonstrate a great deal of tolerance for a male employee who repeatedly propositioned his female co-host in texts, rewarding him with his own show. The only "zero tolerance" Fox News has demonstrated is for the woman who complained about the sexual harassment four 1 Case 1:19-cv-11294 Document 3 Filed 12/10/19 Page 2 of 31 times -- refusing to investigate some of her claims, shunning her, shutting her out of company events, and refusing to allow her on Fox News Channel shows. -
Toxic Cultures Require a Stronger Cure: the Lessons of Fox News for Reforming Sexual Harassment Law
Toxic Cultures Require a Stronger Cure: The Lessons of Fox News for Reforming Sexual Harassment Law Kate Webber Nuñez* ABSTRACT Fox News has been disrupted by a series of sexual harassment scandals that caused the departure of some of its top executives and anchors. The upheaval at Fox News came from public disclosure and social pressure after the actual laws prohibiting harassment failed to deter or stop the rampant abuse at the network. Legal scholars have previously identified the problems with federal harassment law that could explain why widespread sexual harassment occurred at the highest levels of Fox News. Specifically, the existing literature details how women are forced to report harassment nearly immediately, despite the many career-related reasons not to, and yet they are not fully protected against retaliation when they do report the harassment. Scholars have also documented that if a victim’s claims do make it to court, the standard for proving harassment is a nearly insurmountable burden to overcome. These identified weaknesses in the law would seem to explain why the law failed to act as a stronger deterrent to Fox News. Fox News, however, is headquartered in New York City, which has a more strongly worded local anti-harassment law: the New York City Human Rights Law. This law removes each of the identified problems in federal harassment law. The example of Fox News therefore demonstrates that, with entrenched harassing cultures, stronger anti-discrimination statutes that “fix” the identified weaknesses of current law are not enough. This article explains and advocates for two alternative means of strengthening harassment law: expanded use of systemic harassment claims and limits on the use of confidential settlements and mandatory arbitration agreements.
