La disparité de l’échantillon (pays d’origine et résiden- ce actuelle) est un élément essentiel à la recherche. En effet l’existence de similitudes chez des gens d’origine dif- férente, mais vivant dans le même pays et de différences entre des gens de même origine mais vivant dans des pays différents permet de faire des hypothèses concernant l’influence du contexte (après la guerre) sur ces témoi- gnages. Dans cette perspective, donc après des observations et lec- tures de l’ensemble du corpus, j’en ai retenu 42. J’ai procédé à deux sortes d’analyse. La 1ère porte sur la structure et le déroulement des récits et la seconde relève des études de cas. J’ai donc fait une analyse exhaustive (structure et contenu) de 23 témoignages de Juifs d’origine polonaise (12 ayant émigré aux U.S.A. et 11 s’étant établis en France). Nagels, Grèce/Hongrie 5 3 8 4 4 8 Prof. U.L.B.) 30 25 55 15 13 28 7 A la suite de quoi, j’ai revu l’ensemble du corpus pour repérer la présence ou l’absence de certaines thématiques (chance, incommunicabilité, impuissance) afin d’appro- fondir mes réflexions sur les points communs et les diffé- rences, et d’étayer mes interprétations. Mon postulat était que ces différences relèveraient moins de l’expérience concentrationnaire elle-même que de la manière dont on la considère à l’heure actuelle (c’est-à-dire de la signification qu’elle a pu prendre après coup). Cette perception actuelle de son passé se rétracte sur la manière dont on le relate. C’est pourquoi, j’ai accordé une telle importance à l’analyse des processus mis en oeuvre dans le déroulement du discours. Ils permettent de comparer deux populations non comparables sur le plan des contenus. D’une manière générale, nous n’avons pas noté de dif- férence quant à la nature des faits. La cruauté des conditions de vie au camp apparaît partout avec la même intensité. La dénonciation de l’horreur et la fidélité à la mémoire des dis- parus constituent d’ailleurs les motivations essentielles des témoignages, les craintes relatives au révisionnisme/néga- tionnisme : renforcent ces motivations. I. Comparaisons des structures des récits 1. AUX ETATS-UNIS On constate une certaine homogénéité entre les récits dont le déroulement fluide présente une certaine continuité. Le narrateur très concentré procède par auto-investigation pro- gressive. Il semble se parler à lui-même davantage qu’il ne s’adresse à l’interviewer ou à la caméra sauf à certains moments «forts» ou quand il répond à des questions. La Direction de son regard et de ses gestes, le son de sa voix et ses postures sont révélatrices de cette forme d’inté- riorisation d’un discours qui n’exclut pas, bien au contrai- re, l’émergence d’affects intenses. 2. EN FRANCE On constate une hétérogénéité bien plus marquée entre 1 cf ma communication sur les effets 1 déstabilisateurs de la vidéo où je les récits . Les récits plus laborieux et moins fluides ne présen- tent pas la même continuité ni la même unité que précédemment. B. On constate davantage de rupture, de retours en arrières, de digressions, de généralisations, d’anecdotes et de détails «à côté». Il y a plus de longueurs et plus d’essoufflements aussi. Certaines séquences semblent faire office de «remplissage». C. On observe des différences beaucoup plus nettes entre les témoins dans la Maîtrise du langage. L’aisance ou les difficultés verbales qui reflètent des différences d’appartenance socio-culturelle jouent souvent un rôle prédominant dans le déroulement du récit. D. Les redondances sont bien plus fréquentes, ce qui peut dénoter soit une certaine viscosité par rapport à un thème donné (une femme répète 14 fois son refus d’être Kapo) soit un phénomène de sidération. E. Le narrateur s’adresse davantage à l’interviewer et/ou à la caméra. Mais cela n’exclut pas des moments de forte concentration. En résumé le témoignage prend plus souvent une tournure de dialogue intérieur aux Etats-Unis, alors qu’en France, il demeure (sauf à certains moments très intense), un dia- logue sur soi, avec quelqu’un d’autre. Aussi les témoins apparaissent-ils moins défensifs Outre-Atlantique. Ils ne semblent pas essayer de protéger une image d’eux-mêmes ni de défendre leur identité. Aux U.S.A. c’est le récit d’un témoin et en France une interview de témoignage. On ne saurait imputer ces différences à la seule équation personnelle des enquêteurs. Car tant aux Etats-Unis qu’en France, on retrouve les mêmes constantes avec des inter- viewers différents dans chaque pays. 2 Il faut entendre cette seconde partie, II. The figure and deeds of Tadeusz Pankiewicz are widely known and admired throughout Poland, as well as abroad. During the war he used all means at his disposal to save many people, putting himself at the highest risk. He played a game of chance against German occupation forces, a game with lives being at stake. After the war, when the seal uniforms of the SS were substituted with Soviet apparatchiks for whom the occupational trauma became a pretext for acquiring power, Tadeusz Pankiewicz naturally found himself in the spectrum of their interests.

Despite the high levels of death and destruction, the Jews did not submit to their oppressors like Hilberg and other scholars had claimed. To resist the Nazis, the Jews often used a pen rather than a gun. By examining the attempts to preserve Jewish history and culture in Poland’s Warsaw, Łódź, and Kraków ghettos, I will prove these actions constitute a form of resistance because they were an effort to save Jewish history, values, ideas, concepts, and rules of behavior and circumvent the Nazis efforts to eradicate any trace of Jewish existence. In Warsaw, Emanuel Ringelblum established Oneg Shabbath, the largest underground ghetto archive. He and the highly trained O.S. staff compiled and preserved over 35,000 pages of Jewish history and culture. The members meticulously reviewed everything to ensure accuracy. The collection holds studies, monographs, and testimonies pertaining to every aspect of Jewish life from pre-war to the ghetto experience across Poland.
