By Michael S. Neiberg Michael S. Neiberg is Professor of History at the US Army War College and an established authority on the Great War. His writing has been recognized with a Choice Outstanding Academic Title award, a Tomlinson Prize for best book on World War I, and a Harry Frank Guggenheim fellowship. In 2011, Harvard University Press published his Dance of the Furies: Europe and the Outbreak of World War I which looked at popular reactions to the outbreak of the Great War. In 2012, Basic Books will publish his Blood of Free Men: The Liberation of Paris, 1944. This essay is based on his talk to FPRI’s History Institute for Teachers on “Great Battles and How They Have Shaped American History,” cosponsored and hosted by the First Division Museum at Cantigny, Wheaton, IL, on April 21-22, 2012.
