➤ Purpose: ➤ To address the Eutychian controversy ➤ Eutychian controversy- the controversy about the relationship between ’ divine and human nature started by Eutyches teaching that Jesus’ divinity overcame his humanity. ➤ To establish a unified teaching of Jesus’ humanity and divinity THE COUNCIL OF CHALCEDON

➤ This council was called by Emperor Justinian and it mostly dealt with the emperors wanting to condemn the Three Chapters. ➤ Three Chapters Controversy: Justinian Condemned them because they supported Nestorious and his views about Christ’s human and divine natures being separated rather than together. THE SECOND COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE

➤ Conclusions ➤ This council created its own 11 “chapters”. ➤ The pope left Rome to go to Constantinople, because he was called by Justinian, who wanted him to condemn the three chapters. He was allowed to start his return to Rome in 555. THE SECOND COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE

➤ Catholic: ➤ Justinian believed that condemning the Three Chapters would create and have Catholics believe of the “one nature” in Christ. THIRD COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE

➤ Convened to ➤ end the monothelite controversy ➤ attempt to settle the differences between the Church in the East and West THIRD COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE

➤ Conclusions ➤ It validated the decisions of the first five councils and the creeds of Nicaea and Constantinople I. ➤ By signing to A Definition of Faith, bishops disapproved monoenergism and as heretical. ➤ Monoenergism/monothelistism is the teaching about how divine and how human Jesus really was. Specifically being that Jesus is viewed having two natures, but only one will. THIRD COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE
