THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER Abstract for thesis The Holy Trinity as the Source of the Unity of the Church in the Creative Theological Vision of Fr Dumitru Staniloae Revd VASILE-CIPRIAN BURCA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2015 The aim of this study is to offer a critical presentation of the Trinitarian ecclesiological thought of Fr Dumitru Staniloae, considered to be the most important Romanian Orthodox theologian and a prominent figure of Orthodoxy of the last century. After an overview of the significant aspects of Fr Staniloae’s life and work I investigate the way Fr Staniloae’s theology is regarded by certain representatives of contemporary Western theology in an attempt to place Fr Staniloae and his work in the wider context of the theology of the twentieth century. I argue that Fr Staniloae’s theology is deeply influenced by the theology of the Russian emigration: Florensky, Bulgakov, Florovsky and Lossky. Furthermore I show that despite this obvious influence Staniloae is an independent thinker in his own right, elaborating a personal conception of personhood in which a balance between person and nature is sought at Trinitarian and anthropological level based on a ‘Neo-patristic synthesis’. I hold that in Staniloae’s theology of personhood the person- nature balance is quite fragile because of its personalist overtone. I also make evident the fact that person-nature synthesis is pivotal for Fr Staniloae’s theology in terms of the participation of creation to the divine life. I investigate the particularities of Fr Staniloae’s conception of personhood through the lens of his apophatic theology also looking at its anthropological and cosmological implications. I also argue that in Staniloae’s cosmology the relation between man and creation is at times seen in ideal terms, not giving any practical indication of what human being should actually do in mediating creation’s fulfilment. I show that in terms of methodology Staniloae does not always have an 1 objective and critical approach on the thought of the Fathers by simply considering their thought axiomatic and hardly questioning it. In the third chapter I point out that Staniloae’s Trinitarian theology is the expression of an ontological communitarian personalism in which the Holy Trinity as supreme personal reality is seen as the only perfect communion and the ultimate meaning of all existence. I evaluate the influence of Russian emigration’s theology in the Staniloae’s elaboration of his Trinitarian model identifying its strong aspects but also unveiling its limits and speculative character. In connection to that I investigate the consequences of Fr Staniloae’s engagement in open dialogue with the personalist and existentialist philosophy of his time and confront his vision on the inner link between the divine and human love. In the fourth chapter I argue that the ecclesiological conception of Fr Staniloae evinces the distinctive roles and relations of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church with an emphasis on the reciprocity between the Son and the Holy Spirit regarded simultaneously in the context of interpersonal communion and unity of divine being. Furthermore I study whether the ecclesiological vision of Fr Staniloae which seems to be centred on the image of the Church filled with the Trinitarian uncreated energies, as a permanent Trinitarian epiphany, could provide new elements which are indispensable to the contemporary theology in its quest of finding the balance between universal and local, the institutional and charismatic in the Church. I also try to critically assess the potential and ecumenical relevance of Fr Staniloae’s concept of ‘open sobornicity’ and possibility of its application in the Church.     TRIALS OF THE WAR CRIMINALS General Considerations The Fascist regime that ruled Romania between September 14, 1940, and August 23, 1944, was brought to justice in Bucharest in May 1946, and after a short trial, its principal leaders—Ion and Mihai Antonescu and two of their closest assistants—were executed, while others were sentenced to life imprisonment or long terms of detention. At that time, the trial’s verdicts seemed inevitable, as they indeed do today, derived inexorably from the defendants’ decisions and actions. The People’s Tribunals functioned for a short time only. They were disbanded on June 28, 1946,1 although some of the sentences were not pronounced until sometime later. Some 2,700 cases of suspected war criminals were examined by a commission formed of “public prosecutors,”2 but only in about half of the examined cases did the commission find sufficient evidence to prosecute, and only 668 were sentenced, many in absentia.3 There were two tribunals, one in Bucharest and one in Cluj. It is worth mentioning that the Bucharest tribunal sentenced only 187 people.4 The rest were sentenced by the tribunal in Cluj.     The Image of Justinianic Orthopraxy in Eastern Monastic Literature 2 From 535 to 546, the emperor Justinian issued a series of imperial constitutions which sought to regulate the activities of monks and monasteries. Unprecedented in its scope, this legislative programme marked an attempt by the emperor to bring ascetics firmly under the purview of his government. Taken together, its rulings legislated on virtually every aspect of the ascetic life, prescribing a detailed model of ‘orthopraxy,’ or correct behaviour, to which the emperor demanded monks adhere. However, whilst it is clichéd to evoke Justinian’s status as a reformer of the law, scholars continue to view these orthopraxic rulings with some uncertainty. This is a reflection, in part, of the difficulties faced when attempting to judge the extent to which they were ever adopted or enforced. Studies of the emperor’s divisive religious policies have tended to focus instead upon matters of doctrine and, in particular, Justinian’s efforts to enforce his view of orthodoxy upon anti-Chalcedonian, monastic dissidents. This paper builds upon recent work to argue that the effects of Justinian’s monastic legislation were, in fact, widely felt.1 It will argue that accounts of the mid-sixth century by Eastern monastic authors reveal widespread familiarity with the rulings on ascetic practice contained in the emperor’s Novels. Their reception reveals the extent of imperial power over ascetics during this period, frequently presented as one in which the ‘holy man’ exercised almost boundless social and spiritual authority. I will concentrate on three main examples to illustrate this point, chosen to represent a suitable cross-section of the contemporary monastic movement: Cyril of Scythopolis’ Life of Sabas, the Life of Z‘ura in the Lives of the Eastern Saints by John of Ephesus, and the Coptic texts which detail the career of the Egyptian monastic leader, Abraham of Farshut.2 ORTHOPRAXY IN JUSTINIAN’S MONASTIC LEGISLATION Firstly, however, we must discuss Justinian’s monastic laws in greater detail.

De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall.

Political dis- course is shaped by it, as shown by the degree to which political campaigns and pub- lic policy are framed in terms of the need to counter threats to freedom on both the national and international levels. Economic theory is also defined by it, as seen both in the resources devoted to securing ‘free trade’ agreements among nations and in the way that advertisements appeal to the consumer to exercise—and thereby confirm—her freedom in selecting one product over another. Within this increasingly globalized cul- tural matrix, to be a person is to be free, and to be free is to be able to choose—whether among actual items visible on a shelf or possible futures envisioned in the mind. Freedom is understood as a matter of radical self-determination, and on every side we are encouraged to think that exercising such freedom is our most fundamental calling— the proper fulfilment of our humanity. Freedom was also very important for early Christians. The Graeco-Roman cul- tural context within which Christianity emerged was deeply shaped by different types of fatalism. Human life was understood to be subject to an array of forces beyond the individual’s control, and a variety of means were used to cope with them, ranging from the popular use of amulets and spells to philosophers’ efforts to secure a spirit of indif- ference in the face of fortune’s slings and arrows.

Reports of it abound in church circles accompanied by wry smiles: that someone has discerned ‘their’ call to study overseas, to offer new programs in inspiring locations. It has even become a lunchtime joke: ‘Have you discerned your sandwich options?’ While Christian tradition is clear that all of these choices, from diet to institutional investment to individual vocation, are indeed matters for discernment, applying the buzz word rightly is no laughing matter. Against a wide‐spread assumption that discernment is an individual concern into which the Christian community should not intrude or even enquire too closely, the monastic tradition points to an accompanying vocabulary of other terms. Ancient catch‐cries from the Christian tradition link ‘discernment’ powerfully to ‘humility’, ‘obedience’, ‘accountability’, and ‘the infinite horizon of God’s Reign’. Woven together these qualities and attitudes give a rich texture to the patterns of faithful discernment. These less marketable but deeply resonant terms offer checks and balances to the tendency to see discernment as a personal matter for an individual and God. Authentic discernment is a spiritual gift and fruit of humility, made possible by a loving community. This article explores the monastic understanding of discernment and the role of accountability in ensuring good decisions. It identifies two paradoxes. Firstly, while individuals who seek God are called to ask above all ‘Who am I?’, they never discover their true selves alone, as self‐authorising mavericks, but always in community and in the neighbour.

    The poetry, a christian resistance support in Romanian prisons Ana NECHITA Abstract: Documents of special importance for their content, giving the voice of a tumultuous and broken destiny, which marked the young generation of the 1960’s, the poems of communist prisons are a significant sound of experiences had in suffering by those who wrote them. Pages written with blood, these poems by their testimonial value, require from us not to ignore their long sacrificial experience, using the freedom, stolen to these authors, for the rebuilding of the nation and the reconstruction of historical truth. The prison poetry, being between the fighting weapons of spiritual resistance, is located near the divine, tending to transfiguration, thing which is happening not few times. Thus, poetry of the prisons becomes a direct way of communicating of the one behind the bars with God. Endowed with the talent of rhyme and having the conscience of fight for truth, for a Romanian creed, these „angels of pain”, as they were called poets of communist prisons in Romania, assured their spiritual survival by sacrificing the best of them on the country altar, replacing the moments of indignation with life in spirit, and here pain is receiving a salvation sense. The lyrics of the imprisoned poets, springing out from pain and completed through pain, formed bright candles from the overflowing of their hearts for all those which was facing the same situation. In the shadow of the cell, under the lightless Professor of Romanian language and literature at “Ion Holban” Technical College, Iaşi. Romania Ana NECHITA vault of the lead mines, along with prayer, the poetry was a saving word, a flasher that lightened and assuaged in the darkness.
