Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms
Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms by Denis J. Bekkering A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfillment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2015 © Denis J. Bekkering 2015 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. My wife Erica is the main reason that this project has been completed. -

AN ANALYSIS OF THE AGENDA-SETTING POTENTIAL OF THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART By Sean Peick A Senior Honors Thesis Submitted to the Department of Communication of Boston College May 2011 i Acknowledgments First and foremost, I would like to thank my family for everything they have done that has helped lead me to the completion of a project that, growing up, I never dreamed I would be able to attempt. Their constant support – as well as a willingness to ensure that I was doing my best to stay on top of things – is something for which I will always be grateful. For these reasons, I dedicate this thesis to them. I would be remiss if I did not also accord a good amount of credit to my advisor, Dr. William Stanwood. From the project’s genesis as a research paper for his honors seminar all the way until the final draft of this thesis, he was always there with suggestions for how I could better achieve my desired results. His continual edits to the writing of this paper were invaluable, and his never-ending assurances that I was on the right path were a bigger help than I’m sure I let on. -
Celebrates at 25 Music
ARAB TIMES, MONDAY, JULY 26, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Music Crosby taps talented friends Shawhan displays commanding alto By Steven Wine enny Shawhan, “Don’t Be Afraid” (24 Angels/ JCoastal Bend Music ) Jenny Shawhan has a big voice and knows how to use it. “Let me soar,” she sings on her new album as she does just that. “Don’t Be Afraid” showcases the Denver-based Shawhan’s alto, a commanding, captivating instru- ment that conveys both strength and vulnerability, and can put on the twang. She wrote or cowrote all 10 tunes, and the theme is where need begins and ends. Several songs serve as a declaration of independence, including “I Do It for Me,” a tale of liberation and occasion- al libation. “Don’t You Tell Me What to Do” is a chip-kicker Shawhan sings with her fi st, and the power ballad “You Can’t Hurt Me Now” peaks with a dan- dy kiss-off line: “You never even knew me, and you re- ally missed out.” Best of all is Shawhan Shawhan’s sassy rendering of “Daddy’s Got a Briefcase,” a business story. The announcements, though not accompanied by sanc- tions against the Chinese government, were intended as a forceful condemnation of activities a senior Biden administration official described as part of a “pattern of JOB irresponsible behavior in cyberspace.” They highlighted the ongoing threat from Chinese hackers even as the administration remains consumed with trying to curb ran- somware attacks from Russia-based syndicates that have targeted critical infrastructure. The broad range of cyberthreats from Beijing disclosed on Monday included a ransomware attack from govern- ment-affiliated hackers that has targeted victims — in- cluding in the U.S. — with demands for millions of dollars. U.S officials also alleged that criminal contract hackers associated with China’s Ministry of State Security have engaged in cyber extortion schemes and theft for their own profit.
