Safe Parking and Zebra crossings Massive thanks to the PTA for funding our new ‘Think before you park’ banner. We have noticed an improvement in parking, however, some parents/carers are still parking dangerously either on the corner, opposite the junction, on the pavement or over the zebra crossing. Dangerous parking could endanger a child’s life so please think before you park and park considerately. Images of dangerous parking will be submitted to the Police.

The consortium have confirmed that they will re-paint the zebra crossings very soon. We will be focusing on educating pupils how to use zebra crossings safely via assemblies and PSHE lessons. Please can you support us by ensuring you and your children use these crossings responsibly.

CEC Green Team - New Crisp Packet and Used Pen Recycling Bins TheCampus Eco Team have just put out our new Crisp Packet and Used Pens recycling boxes on Campus. Collection and recycling of these items is working as part of a great scheme hosted by Terra-cycle, who will collect each load and in return give us Terra-cycle points which will be used to support the local Community Youth Genesis Charity (Younghayes Centre) here in Cranbrook. These bins are located in the foyer and are open to all who use the site. Please help us and join a great initiative to recycle!

Secondary pupils take part in world leading exercise science research with the University of Exeter I am delighted to be working with pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus as part of my first PhD research project. I am exploring brain blood flow responses during exercise of different intensities in children, adolescents and adults. This will allow us to understand how the processes that control brain blood flow change with growth and maturation, which is important to understand how we can promote brain health with exercise. This uses novel, non-invasive and exciting equipment to study brain blood flow during exercise in children, which has never been done before!

Max Weston, PhD Student, University of Exeter If your child would like to take part in this research but hasn't yet been in touch, please email [email protected] or collect an information pack from behind reception"

Cranbrook Healthy Town Cranbrook as a new town is on a journey to become a healthy town where the conditions are created to enable the best possible opportunities for health, wellbeing and physical activity. The Cranbrook Healthy New Town Programme funded by NHS has been working with ICE Creates through engagement events with residents, groups and agencies who through collaboration are creating those conditions.

Part of this community led approach has involved working with Cranbrook Education Campus and St Martin’s C of E Primary School, to develop the children to be resilient and better able to manage their wellbeing through the Imagine If - Assets for Success skills programme

Using the facilitation and community development skills and experience of ICE Creates we have gathered insights on what it is like to live in Cranbrook and to deepen the understanding of what is important to build on and to inspire people to get

involved. Cranbrook’s pioneering sense of community and aspirations to be a thriving town set to flourish as it grows are clear from this work. Through facilitation and capturing the community voice via ICE Creates’ graphic scribing process, a series of rich visual pictures are helping to create further conversations and community involvement to continue Cranbrook’s journey to become a happy and healthy place in which to live, work and play. 4

Attendance/absence At 94% our Campus attendance could be much better! Our aim is for 100%. If your child is unwell then you need to call the school and inform us first thing in the morning. All absences are recorded as unauthorised until you contact the school. Please ensure that non-urgent medical appointments are booked outside of school hours. Secondary pupils will receive a same day break detention if they are late without a valid reason. Our attendance policy can be found on our website here. https://www.cranbrookeducationcampus.org.uk/about-us/policies/attendance-policy/

Early Years update from Mrs Simpson

This half term has flown past so quickly, and once again your children have been actively engaged with lots of busy learning. We have planted trees, found bugs, written information books, discovered lots of different types of transport….and that was just in the first week! Home Learning once again has continued to impress and amaze me – thank you so much for all your support with this, the children are so excited when they bring their learning into school. This half term we have seen a variety of exciting homemade instruments, some beautiful vehicles made from recycled materials, and some fascinating facts about a variety of mini-beasts. Learning at its best!

Outdoor information boards Apologies that our outdoor information boards have not been available recently – both the one outside Red/Yellow bases and Reception have broken. We have ordered replacements, but in the meantime any important information will be posted on classroom windows.

Breakfast/After School Club Places Please be aware that our nursery administrator now works Monday 10-1, Wednesday 10-1 and Thursday 10-1. If you have an enquiry please email [email protected]. If you are hoping to increase your hours in breakfast or after school club for September please get in touch soon and we will try our best to accommodate your request, although we are currently full on most days. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOUR CHILD IS STARTING SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER AND YOU REQUIRE WRAPAROUND CARE, YOU WILL NEED TO RESERVE YOUR PLACE WITH FISH (Fun In School Holidays). We aim to respond to all Nursery enquiries emails within 2 working days.

September school starters It has now been confirmed by County Council that we will be opening our Reception year group to a pan of 90 children, across three classes, and we are really pleased to be able to welcome those families who previously had not been allocated a place.

If you have been allocated a place at the Campus, you should have now received a letter inviting you to attend a parents/carers welcome meeting on Wednesday 5th June at either 2.15pm or 6.15pm. Please can you make sure you return the slip indicating which one you will attend, as there will be lots of important information for you at this meeting. If you are unable to attend please do not hesitate to contact me, and we will make alternative arrangements to get that information to you.

New Staff We are delighted to announce that at the end of last week we successfully appointed two teachers to cover the maternity leave for Mrs Goode and Mrs Clements. Our new teachers, Mrs Naomi White and Miss Molly Nursey, will be joining the team in September, and will be spending time in school later this term to get to know the children. You will be informed of your child’s teacher for September shortly after half term, when numbers and arrangements have been confirmed.

Uniform Currently our Nursery children have the option to wear our Nursery sweatshirt and Nursery t-shirt. We have now changed the colour of the T-shirt to green (still with the school motif) in line with our school colours. These T- shirts are available from our current uniform stockists but also from our new stockists Honiton Sports Shop. From September 2019, nursery tops this will be the only colour option, but if your child already has a blue T-shirt, please do not feel you need to replace it if it still has plenty of wear in it, as we will be phasing out the blue ones for the rest of this academic year. We are currently in discussion about making our Nursery tops compulsory for September – further details of this will be sent to you shortly after half term.

Please may I remind you that all Reception children need to be in correct uniform daily, including ties.

Safety outside We have noticed recently that several younger children have been playing unsupervised in our outdoor learning areas at drop off and pick up times. Please can you make sure younger siblings are kept away from the areas we have set up for our day’s learning – there are potential hazards for very young children, and it also means our Nursery and Reception children cannot access the learning if it has been played with. Please make sure you supervise all children at these busy times of day as gates are open and we want to ensure they are kept safe. Thank you once again all for your continued support this half term and your involvement in your children’s learning, have a lovely break and we look forward to seeing you when we return on Monday 3rd June.

Primary update from Mr Pratt It has been a short but busy half term with lots of different learning opportunities and activities happening!

We have been enjoying Ancient Greek feasts, being visited by police dogs, performing class assemblies to our peers and taking part in some ‘special quizzes’ in Year 2!

Your children may well have come home saying they have had some different teachers coming in to teach in their classes as part of our recruitment process recently. I am really pleased to say that we have some new faces joining our Primary Phase. Please can I ask you to make them really welcome when they come and join our team. They will be coming in to school over the coming half term to get familiarised and settled in so please come and say hello to:  Mrs Maeve Megit – Key Stage 1 Teacher  Mrs Janine O’Donnell – Key Stage 2 Teacher  Miss Sarah Morath – Key Stage 2 Teacher  Mr Paul Reynolds – Key Stage 2 Teacher

We are also very pleased to announce that two of our staff members have new roles within the Primary Phase with Mr Evans becoming the Lower Primary Phase Leader (Y1-3) and Mrs Jo Bond becoming the Upper Primary Phase Leader (Y4-6), both will retain their teaching commitments.

This will mean that come September if you have any queries you should first speak with your child’s class teacher. If this is not resolved, you should then speak with your respective Lower or Upper Phase Leader. If you still seek a resolution at this point then you would be directed by Mr Evans or Mrs Bond to speak with Mr Pratt.

We are pleased to announce that we also hope to be welcoming a different type of staff member to the Primary Phase Team! All being well, at some point during the next half term, Woody, a cockapoo (meaning he should be hypoallergenic) puppy; who will be living with me and basing himself in my office, will begin gradually phased in visits to our school. He will be a Reading and Therapy dog for those times when talking with an adult just isn’t as good as a bit of time with a dog! He will be learning lots of new skills to help the children too and so we will be being very patient and not rushing his entry in to the school. I will send out more information nearer the time of his first visit so that you are aware and you can inform us of anything noteworthy that we will need to consider.

A few reminders about upcoming residential trips for three of our classes:  Year 5 – We are all getting very excited and prepared for our visit to the Eden Project from 10-12th June. We will be holding a parents meeting on Friday 24th May at 3:30pm in class 5JB. If you are unable to make this meeting we will be emailing out the presentation, including kit lists that evening.  Year 3/4 – Our visit to Camp Escot is fast approaching on the 26th-27th June. We will be holding a parents meeting on Friday 7th June at 3:30pm in the main hall. We will be emailing out the presentation and kit list.

11

 Please be reminded that it is really helpful for us as a school if you can get permission slips, SOE3 forms and payments into the school as soon as possible so we can press ahead and continue organising our trips.

We have begun the process of revolutionising our play times and would like to welcome you to a parents meeting so that you can find out more about what is happening on Thursday 6th June at 2:15pm. The new play package is called OPAL, you can find more information about this here: www.outdoorplayandlearning.co.uk

The idea behind OPAL is to offer a full range of play opportunities for your child to explore the 16 different types of play to aid their personal, social and physical development.

There will be information shared soon about an opportunity for you to come in to school and enjoy playtime with your child.

As we move closer to the end of the year more questions are being asked around class teachers and staffing for next year.

To be very clear, we will inform all parents about classes and teachers for next year at the same time. I have had several requests from parents to be told earlier than other parents as their child needs to know. We will send this information out as and when appropriate in one go. We will be sending out reports on the 12th July and will be holding an optional drop-in parents evening the following week if you should need to discuss your child’s report.

Secondary update from Miss Telford  Although it’s been a short half-term, the secondary phase have making excellent progress in lessons and have been getting involved with a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Over thirty pupils have received their Platinum Award for 450 House Points and are now competing for the highest number in their key stage.  On Thursday 9th May a representative from the University of Exeter gave a presentation to Key Stage Four about careers in food and farming. Year 9 then participated in an online workshop about different career paths in this area.  Members of the Green Team visited the Exeter Recycling Centre to learn more about their practises and the extra steps that we can take as a Campus to encourage people to recycle. They are going to present an assembly after half-term to share their knowledge with other pupils.  The GreenTeam has just been awarded a Bronze Eco Schools Award for efforts towards creating a sustainable campus lifestyle, which is great news for our Campus!  Secondary pupils have taken part in this year’s Great British School Clean and the The Big Spring Beach Clean- Summit to Sea. These are nationwide drives to remove waste and plastic from our oceans, schools and communities. They have been busy with five separate events cleaning up not only Exmouth Beach but in and around the Cranbrook Community and Campus. We have also taken the Clean-up initiative to the next level by integrating it into different aspects of the curriculum – designing awareness posters and refining how we as a school manage our waste.  A group of Year 10 girls had the opportunity to go to The Maynard School to participate in a STEM workshop called Detectives Day. They were given a replica of a real crime scene and had to act as detectives solving clues and taking finger prints. In the afternoon they completed a physics workshop, designing a car that was propelled by a balloon.  We had an excellent turn out for Year 8 Option’s Evening last week. Caroline Earp from Exeter College started the evening by explaining the range of post-sixteen options that are available. We then heard from Heads of Department about the range of courses on offer.  A team of four Year 8 pupils successfully completed the Exmoor Challenge. They walked the 16 mile course, navigating their own route and competing against hundreds of other schools. They were extremely tired afterwards but very satisfied with their achievements!  Our first Duke of Edinburgh practise expedition was completed by seventeen pupils in Year 9 and Year 10. They walked along the South Devon coast path from Otterton to Budleigh where they camped overnight, putting up their own tents and cooking their meal. On Saturday they finished the sixteen mile route by walking on to Sidmouth. Secondary PE department fixtures and extra-curricular update from Mr Jordan

Throughout the Spring months, Campus teams and athletes have been in action in Ted Wragg Multi Academy Trust fixtures and local/regional tournaments.

In Year-10 Athletics, Jack progressed into the Exeter and District squad after throwing a personal best of 20.55m in the Inter-boys 1.25kg Discus. Dylan closely missed out on selection by 5cm in the Inter-boys High Jump after his

13

best jump of 1.50m secured a credible 4th place. We wish Jack every success in the East Devon School trials later on this month.

Girls Football has been high on the agenda this term with a Year-7 and 8 team attending one tournament and the Year-9 and 10 team attending two tournaments. The Year -7 and 8 team are fairly fresh to big tournaments and they don't come any bigger than the Catherine Fraser Memorial Tournament. This was a great experience for the group of players who are beginning to grow in confidence and skill. Unfortunately, the girls did not qualify for the knock out stages, however they showed a resilience and team spirit which in the future will be sure to facilitate better results.

The Year 9 and 10 team also attended the Catherine Fraser Memorial Tournament. This group of girls have developed into a recognised force within this age group. The team came second in their group after recording two wins and two frustrating draws. Unfortunately, the quarter final with Queen Elizabeth School resulted in a 2-0 defeat with the girls struggling to find the target during an otherwise positive performance.

After qualifying earlier in the year, this age group then played in the Devon FA regional finals. The girls were against some really tough opposition from all over Devon. They lost their first game against Stoke Damerel after being caught on the counter attack and then drew with West Exe after an enthralling end to end game. In their final group game they lost 2-0 to the eventual tournament winners . It was a resilient performance in which the girls should of capitalised on the chances they generated. The girls can hold their heads high and take a lot of credit from their performances in both tournaments. It really does go to show that hard work on the training field pays off.

Earlier this term Key-stage 3 students had the chance to try out the exciting sport of Grass track cycling. Based on the velodrome team pursuit, students had the opportunity to receive coaching from one of British Cycling's top coaches. A team of four Year-7 and 8 students then went on to compete in the Exeter area trials, recording consistently impressive times of under 3 minutes per lap. This consistency in performance has led to the team being selected to compete in the Devon regional finals in June. Well Done to Jake, Charlie, Fenella and Leah for this first in Campus sporting achievements.

14

With the summer months drawing ever closer, Rounders has been at the forefront of inter-trust fixtures. The Campus Year-7 team has competed in their first fixture of the season, winning one game and losing two in a closely thought tournament held at the . Big hitter Ollie racked up the rounders, whilst some clever fielding and accurate throwing limited the damage caused by the other teams batters containing mainly Year-8 students. The team should be very proud of this spirited performance and I look forward to seeing what they can achieve against opposition their own age later this term.

The Inter-house sports competition remains a close HOUSE POINTS POSITION thought affair with one point separating three of the four OTTER 20 1st houses. Throughout the Spring months houses have pitted HARE 14 2nd themselves against each other in Netball, Handball, BADGER 13 3rd Orienteering and Rounders, showcasing the skills and FOX 13 3rd tactics attained during curricular PE Lesson. With three sports remaining it is still mathematically possible for any house to walk away top dog. Finally, my hat goes off to the Campus Year-8 Exmoor Youth Challenge team.

This team of four students were required to navigate a 16- mile walking route over open moorland and pathways completely self sufficient. The team acquitted themselves well to the conditions and navigational hurdles, demonstrating effective team work and resilience through out this arduous event. In addition to completing the event the students raised over £100 for the Children's Hospice South West. A well deserved congratulation goes out to Ben, Finn, Ella and Lewis.

Our Extra Curricular program will be continuing throughout the Spring and Summer term offering weekly; Trampolining, Football, Tennis and Athletics clubs.

As always I would like to thank parents and carers for their support, ensuring students have the correct PE clothing and equipment to enable them to access all aspect of the PE curriculum safely.
