  • Year 7 Residential
1 Newsletter: Issue 7 October 2017 Year 7 Residential Year 7 students have now successfully completed their first residential at Bideford College. The 3 day trip to Dartmoor Training Centre was both challenging and rewarding. We encouraged students to step out of their comfort zone and experi- ence learning outside the class room. Students developed the skills required and the expectations at Bideford College. They have also developed positive relationships with other students and staff within their House which will last throughout their time at Bideford College. Mrs Vowles. www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 2 Lyndsey Kane - Principal I cannot believe that we are already at the end of the first half term of the academic year 2017-2018. The 7 weeks have flown by and so very much has been achieved in them. We came back from the summer break celebrating our best ever examination results at both GCSE and A Level at Bideford College. As I said then, in my press release, this was just the “tip of the iceberg” in the future achievements of the staff and students of Bideford College. The term started with a reiteration of the high standards and expectations of all at Bideford College and we have all been working really hard from the very first day – to surpass the wonderful achievements of the students last year and make sure that every young person who attends Bideford College is the very best that they can be. We wel- comed a wonderful group of Year 7 students and I am privileged to spend most days hearing about what they have been up to, as we chat in the corridors.

Simon King THIS PROJECT OWES ITS EXISTENCE TO THE MANY KINDNESSES OF THESE PEOPLE This page left blank intentionally Throughout the work on this project, I have frequently returned to a single and overwhelming speculation; the nature of the relationship between the Adult and the Child. Education, despite all grandiose schemes, bureaucratic generalisations and cross-referential subtleties, is about this relationship. Education, as we experience it in ‘civilised’ societies is primarily concerned with the linking of human behaviour to commercial enterprise. I consider the dominant feature of education to be the mass commercial exploitation of the young. The history of human slavery is evidence of our capacity to feel no value - other than commercial value - for other human beings. Our treatment of the young is still characterised by this lack of value. We speak of the young person as ‘the future’, ‘the destiny of mankind’ a ‘spiritual investment’. Such designations are sentimental and ruthless formulas concealing the slavery referred to. It seems to me startling and eccentric to conclude that adult fear and sometimes hatred should so successfully lie hidden within educational policy. The conscription character of schooling, the effects of isolation amongst large numbers of other people, examinations, and destructive forms of competition, are patterns of control.
