CARNEY Department of Geography, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095 ABSTRACT.—The African diaspora to the Americas was one of plants as well as people. European slavers provisioned their human cargoes with African and other Old World useful plants, which enabled their enslaved work force and free ma- roons to establish them in their gardens. Africans were additionally familiar with many Asian plants from earlier crop exchanges with the Indian subcontinent. Their efforts established these plants in the contemporary Caribbean plant corpus. The recognition of pantropical genera of value for food, medicine, and in the practice of syncretic religions also appears to have played an important role in survival, as they share similar uses among black populations in the Caribbean as well as tropical Africa. This paper, which focuses on the plants of the Old World tropics that became established with slavery in the Caribbean, seeks to illuminate the botanical legacy of Africans in the circum-Caribbean region. The other 2 objectives (consumer acceptance and outreach) were to be performed during year 2 of the project and were not funded. However, we are looking for funding for the outreach component of this project, and the plants generated will be used for Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) rearing by the California Dept. of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). This report summarizes the research accomplished for objective 1, and all studies were conducted by the UC-Davis Plant Transformation Facility. Methods for micropropagation of curry trees were developed using several types of media for both seedlings from seed and nodal explants from mature trees. Establishment of in vitro shoot cultures and multiplication of shoots in vitro has been achieved and improvements in shoot quality were observed by altering the basal salt formulations. -

Most of the snake venoms produce intense lethal effects, which could lead to impermanent or permanent disability or in often death to the victims. The accessible specific treatment was using the antivenom serum separated from envenomed animals, whose efficiency is reduced against these lethal actions but it has a serious side effects. In this circumstance, this review aimed to provide an updated overview of herbal plants used popularly as antiophidic agents and discuss the main species with pharmacological studies supporting the uses, with prominence on plants inhibiting the lethal effects of snake envenomation amongst the rural tribal peoples of India. There are several reports of the accepted use of herbal plants against snakebites worldwide. In recent years, many studies have been published to giving pharmacological confirmation of benefits of several vegetal species against local effects induced by a broad range of snake venoms, including inhibitory potential against hyaluronidase, phospholipase, proteolytic, hemorrhagic, myotoxic, and edematogenic activities. -

The leaves, rhizome and root tubers of the plant possess a number of medicinal applications. The plant is economically important and is over exploited to the extent that there is always scarcity of propagating material (rhizomes) which is the consumable part too. The present review provides broad information of Kaempferia galanga throwing light on its current status, ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology. Extracts of Kaempferia galanga have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-diarrheal, anti- bacterial, sedative, cytotoxic, insecticidal and anthelmintic properties which are reported here. Number of studies has been conducted, providing information related to Kaempferia as antioxidant; antimutagenic; and chemopreventive agent. This paper reports some isolated compounds from this plant, biological activity, and bioprospecting for cancer treatment. This plant has 8 different botanical names which are Boesenbergia cochinchinensis (Gagnep.) Loes., Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schltr., Curcuma rotunda L., Gastrochilus panduratus (Roxb.) Ridl., Gastrochilus rotundus (L.) Alston, Kaempferia cochinchinensis Gagnep., Kaempferia ovate Roscoe, Kaempferia galanga, Kaempferia rotunda, and Kaempferia pandurata Roxb nonetheless it is currently known as Boesenbergia rotunda (L.)Mansf (Tan Eng-Chong, et. al, 2012). The plants grown naturally in damp, shaded parts of the lowland or on hill slopes, as scattered plants or thickets. Available Online: 29th November, 2014 ABSTRACT In the present study the plant was subjected to phytochemical evaluation and anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities by hiring carrageenan induced paw edema, human red blood cells membrane stabilization method (HRBC) as well as animal model of acute inflammation was adopted to probe the possible anti-inflammatory mechanism and eddy’s hot plate and tail flick methods. Polyphenolic extract of Acalypha indica Linn (PPEA) produced significant anti-inflammatory (P < 0.001) and analgesic (P < 0.001) effects in dose dependent manner. The highest levels of phenolics and flavonoids (9.27 mg TA/g and 8.75 mg Ru/g, respectively).The total phenolic and flavonoid content indicates that these compounds are likely to be the main nociceptive and inflammatory contributing to the observed activities. PPEA exhibited significant anti- inflammatory mechanism of chemical constituents may be due, at least in part to the inhibition of PGE2 levels. These finding suggest that of the medicinal herb studied in this paper are good source of inflammations. The results afford evidence to support the traditional linctus abuse of PPEA for the action of inflammation. -
