    Sedlmayr: Power, Death and the Value of the Body in Late Capitalism 42 Power, Death and the Value of the Body in Late Capitalism: Anohni’s “Drone Bomb Me” GEROLD SEDLMAYR Technische Universität Dortmund, Germany Introduction Hopelessness The lead single of Anohni’s 2016 album , “Drone Bomb Me”, begins with a shocking imperative: the speaker demands that the addressee eliminate her by dropping 1 a bomb on her: “Explode my crystal guts / Lay my purple on the grass”. Surely, her forthright urge to die is eerie, unsettling. What is even more unsettling, though, is the fact that we are not given any explicit reasons which might help explain her motivation. Is she tired of living? If so, then she is willing to break one of the most potent taboos in our societies, namely the one forbidding suicide: suicide as an empty act, an act that is not simply meaningless within the larger order of things, but that in fact seems to threaten that larger order. Or may we categorise her death wish as self-sacrifice, the symbolic giving of life in order to ensure life? The question remains: why does she resist survival? In the following, Anohni’s song, as well as the video which accompanied its release, will be treated as symptomatic of the late-capitalist structure of feeling. Starting from Jean Baudrillard’s idea that power in contemporary consumer societies is based on the deferral of death, I will discuss how the aestheticized representation of postmodern drone warfare in “Drone Bomb Me” refers to, yet also extends, Michel Foucault’s analysis of modern disciplinary societies, particularly by reflecting on the status of the body and the value it can carry in late capitalism.

A Case Study of Language Discrimination in English and Polish Internet-Mediated Discourse Abstract This article aims to investigate the linguistic means of transphobic discrimination observed on the Internet. The languages analysed are English and Polish, since they both offer their speakers direct and indirect ways that discrimination manifests itself, yet Polish seems to enable a more noticeable means because of the presence of grammatical gender in the lan- guage. The paper discusses twelve samples of Computer-Mediated Communication, using the methodological tools offered by Critical Discourse Analysis and Queer Theory. Based on the analysis of the samples, the article shows that even though transphobia lies mainly in lexical choices of the speaker, it is not always direct, i.e. visible in insults and attacks on a trans person, but is oftentimes indirect, i.e. visible in the incorrect use of personal pro- nouns in both English and Polish, or in the incorrect use of grammatical gender in Polish. Moreover, while transphobia visible in language is not always intended by the speaker, it can still be considered to be discriminatory.     THE Virginia Tech’s LGBTQ Magazine Fall 2017, Issue #7 Letter from the Editor I hate to admit it, but this issue of The Interloper almost didn’t happen. Don’t get me wrong—we had the highest turnout of people emailing and wanting to work with the magazine this issue than ever before. I feel like we’re really begin- ning to be seen and known around campus. We have a dedicated staff of editors that have worked tirelessly on these pieces. Our donors have been a great support and gra- cious in their sponsorship of the magazine. Yet, it almost didn’t happen. Why, you may ask? Well, let me explain. Each issue of the magazine, all the way back to Issue #1 in the Spring of 2014, has fol- lowed the same structure, same outline, same design. I think that’s part of The Interloper’s success—we have a great magazine. Yet, print media is a dying art. It’s getting harder and harder to fund The Interloper (which, if you didn’t know, is funded solely by dona- tions each semester). It’s hard to find people The Interloper.     January 25, 2017 For Immediate Release ANOHNI ANNOUNCES “PARADISE” EP, OUT MARCH 17TH ON SECRETLY CANADIAN AND ROUGH TRADE LISTEN TO TITLE TRACK HERE (“PARADISE” EP cover art) ANOHNI will release “PARADISE,” the companion EP to last year's HOPELESSNESS, one of the most critically acclaimed and discussed albums of 2016, on March 17th via Secretly Canadian and Rough Trade. In collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke, on “PARADISE,” ANOHNI seeks to support activist conversations and disrupt assumptions about popular music through the collision of electronic sound and highly politicized lyrics. “PARADISE” includes new songs as well as material recently debuted live. On the title track, “Paradise,” Anohni voices ecstatic alienation, describing a dystopian life filled with horror, awe, comfort and threat. She expresses a sense of disembodiment: "Myself, I'm here... not here, as a point of consciousness." The music is wild and invigorating with a heavy beat conceived by Hudson Mohawke and twisting vocal treatments by Daniel Lopatin. On “Jesus Will Kill You,” ANOHNI expresses feral rage as she confronts businessmen, land destroyers, water corrupters, oil extractors, human slavers, and inevitably, Jesus worshippers. She curses Christian corporates with the knowledge that one day their God will punish them for their crimes against humanity and nature, destroying their comfortable, insular lives. "Why you hurt me? Why you make me so sick? Seek to destroy our homes? You're a mean old man. Your wealth is predicated upon the poverty of others. What's your legacy? Burning oceans, burning populations, our burning lungs." ANOHNI expresses a mother's rage and heartbreak on “You Are My Enemy.” She experiences alternating waves of suicidal despair and rage at her complicity.

    SPEAKING OUT OF TURN An Introduction Speaking was a demand that the work made on me, and that increasing interactions with others made on me. lorraine o’grady, 20161 PEAKING OUT OF TURN: Lorraine O’Grady and the Art of Language offers the first sustained exploration of the art S and practice of this feminist conceptual artist. O’Grady began her professional arts career in New York during the late 1970s, and as with so many women artists and artists of African descent working at that time, her work and practice were largely overlooked. Today, in her late eighties, she is more productive than ever and has enjoyed greater visibility as her work is being widely exhibited and enthusiastically engaged in both art media and scholarship.2 O’Grady’s impressive interdisciplinary and tremendously significant body of collages, performances, and photo-based installations is being exhibited nationally and inter- nationally. Her writing has also received considerable attention, particularly her much-anthologized essay “Olympia’s Maid: Reclaiming Black Female Subjectivity,” which appeared first in Afterimage (1992), then in New Feminist Criticism: Art/Identity/ Action (1994), and later in Amelia Jones’s Feminism and Visual Cul- ture Reader (2002/2010), now a feminist art historical mainstay. 1 62595txt.indd 1 21-05-21 1:48 PM Finally, a collection of the artist’s writings, Lorraine O’Grady: Writing in Space, 1973– 2019, was published by Duke University Press in 2020. And while this new attention has generated numerous critical insights, much of her archive and praxis remains unexamined. In addition to retracing the artist’s career, Speaking Out of Turn reveals the extent to which O’Grady’s entire creative practice has been predicated on her crit- ical engagement with language, and more specifically how the written and spoken word have shaped her impressive oeuvre.
