But secretly, everyone likes it a little, and having guests from out of town is the perfect excuse for cynical old-timers to go. What's It Like? All San Franciscans love to hate Fisherman's Wharf. Content never to visit the area, they complain of the tacky shops selling cheap souvenirs, the "novelty" museums whose novelty has long worn off and busloads of tourists blocking the view to Alcatraz. But secretly, everyone likes it a little, and having guests from out of town is the perfect excuse for otherwise cynical old-timers to "force" themselves to go. And it is possible to have a cheap, good time. Just avoid the wax museums and the "I'm With Stupid" T-shirt stands, and what's left are some of the best views in the city, fresh Dungeness crab and the ever-amusing sea lions. Last year, almost 12 million people made their way to the Wharf. In international surveys, it ranks as the No. 1 destination for SF-bound visitors, right ahead of Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge. -

Matej Santi, Elias Berner (eds.) Music – Media – History Music and Sound Culture | Volume 44 Matej Santi studied violin and musicology. He obtained his PhD at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, focusing on central European history and cultural studies. Since 2017, he has been part of the “Telling Sounds Project” as a postdoctoral researcher, investigating the use of music and discourses about music in the media. Elias Berner studied musicology at the University of Vienna and has been resear- cher (pre-doc) for the “Telling Sounds Project” since 2017. HAIGHT-ASHBURY AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE COUNTERCULTURE MOVEMENT A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Historic Preservation and Planning by Ethan James Potter August 2020 i © 2020 Ethan James Potter i ABSTRACT The City of San Francisco, specifically the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, was the epicenter of the American Counterculture Movement in the mid to late sixties. The social, cultural, and political impact of this movement is vast and widely known. This thesis provides a themed historical narrative of the Haight-Ashbury, specifically about its role in the Counterculture Movement. There are three major themes that explore the history of both the Counterculture Movement and Haight-Ashbury. Significant planning and preservation efforts for Haight-Ashbury, since the sixties, are also surveyed. Subjects such as intangible culture, history, city planning, and architecture are examined as they pertain to Haight-Ashbury and the Counterculture Movement. ii BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Ethan Potter is, above all, passionate for history. He grew up in Sammamish Washington, playing baseball and football. He studied history, English, and anthropology at Washington State University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He then worked in education as a tutor and a docent. Ethan decided to pursue a degree in Historic Preservation for its ability to educate the public about history. Ethan was inspired to pursue history after reading Carl L. Becker’s 1930 speech, “Every Man A Historian,” which demonstrates how historical research is conducted by nearly everyone, every day. -

WINTER ISSUE NOVEMBER 2020 AEROGRAM NEWSLETTER HAMMONDSPORT, NY CURTISSMUSEUM.ORG AEROGRAM 01 LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR In many ways, 2020 was the year that wasn’t. No summer motorcycle shows, no Wings & Wheels, no summer educational groups or activities, and no fun parties or events this fall. From March 17 through June 25, the Curtiss Museum experienced the longest prolonged closure in our organization’s nearly 60 years of operations. For months we listened to the creaks and groans of an empty building which are usually muffled by the daily sounds of excited patrons as they toured through our beautiful collection. Most of our days were spent trying to plan for a future nobody could describe with any certainty. Our staff and Board evaluated all possible contingencies as we settled in for a prolonged siege. As reopening appeared on the horizon, our state and local health authorities provided guidance and support. We communicated frequently with museums from across the country, using our collective experiences and resources to help each other reopen slowly and safely. Since June 26, we have been overwhelmed by the positivity and flexibility of our patrons as they donned their masks, sanitized their hands, and enjoyed everything we had to offer during a shortened and profoundly strange summer season. The American Alliance of Museums predicts that nearly 20% of U.S. museums will not survive the next 18 months. Though the Curtiss Museum experienced its fair share of economic disruptions in 2020, we survived and thrived with the help of our amazing staff, Trustees, volunteers and community. -

One style of life, one mood — like Victorianism or Edwardianism — was giving way to another. The industrial age based on the mechanical exploitation of coal and iron was giving way to electronics, computers, automation — with all the social and intellectual results such a basic revolution implies — but as yet few indeed understood what was happening. The country was in a minor economic depression following the end of the Korean War. The Korean War represented a qualitative leap forward in technology and a lag in all other factors. However, morale broke down for a more simple reason. You can fight only one such war every twenty-five years. The Korean War took place within the effective memory of the Second World War. The academic and intellectual establishment, Left, Right, and Center, was shattered, demoralized, and discredited by the years of McCarthyism. Young men by the thousands were returning from the Korean War to the colleges disillusioned and contemptuous of their elders. They said to each other, “Keep your nose clean and don’t volunteer.” “Don’t believe anybody over thirty.” Communication between groups broke down. Only those of the older generation who had remained defiant were respected, listened to, questioned. Just as the Army took years to discover the almost total breakdown of morale in Korea, so the older intellectuals were unaware that a volcano was building up under them. -
