While America was economically wealthy after the war, it still had to deal with extremely difficult social and cultural challenges. Due to these new aspects of life, there were increasing differences in both the interests and values of children and their parents, what we have learned to call the "generation gap". The "generational gap" between the youth culture and their parents meant a polarizing society, each hating and completely misunderstanding the other.. This eventually resulted in a highly political youth culture that was laterally opposed to the government. Through isolation, the counterculture began to develop new philosophies and new ways of thinking, and a huge part of that philosophy was the pursuit of a "Good Society", a utopian dream for world peace. -

Approval of this proposed action by the Commission is the Approval Action as defined by S.F. Administrative Code Chapter 31. Strategic Plan Strategy 1: Inspire Public Space: Keep today’s parks safe, clean, and fun; promote our parks’ historic and cultural heritage; and build the great parks of tomorrow. Objective 1.2: Strengthen the quality of existing parks and facilities. Strategy 2: Inspire Play: Promote active living, well-being and community for San Francisco’s diverse and growing population. Objective 2.2: Strengthen and promote the safety, health and well-being of San Francisco’s youth and seniors. Strategy 3: Inspire Investment: Through community engagement, advocacy, and partnerships, cultivate more financial resources to keep San Francisco’s parks and programs accessible for all. Objective 3.3: Cultivate increased philanthropic support. Background Information Located in the Western Addition neighborhood, on Fillmore Street between Turk Street and Golden Gate Avenue, this 10,000 square foot park is nestled by a three-story landmark brick building (north), three-story private housing (east), and a one-story restaurant parking lot (south). A small oval stage sits at the end of the central lawn area that is surrounded by benches and game tables, which encourages neighborhood event gathering, sitting, and picnicking. -

Surveying the area through a lens of geographic place and space, this research will look at the historical factors that led to the rise of a counterculture here. To contextualize this development, it is necessary to examine the development of a cosmopolitan neighborhood after World War II that was multicultural and bohemian into something culturally unique. -

Furthermore, the entire subject of the effects of rock on a listening audience varies considerably from listener to listener. The teen-ager just likes, the sound of the music and the feelings that the music brings out in him, while the adult still thinks of rock as a lot of noise no matter how many magazine articles they read or TV programs they see. -

Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer. -

Parks & Museums Golden Gate Park (GGP) is one of the largest urban parks in the world (picture is view from the West): in addition to rolling green space, the park features many sites within its borders, including the De Young Museum of modern art (go to the observatory on the top for a panoramic view) as well as a natural history museum, the California Academy of Sciences; a Japanese Tea Garden; a renowned Botanical Garden/Arboretum; Stow Lake, where you can rent a row boat; and more. For details, see the park website. ! Three restaurant options just south of the park, in the "Inner Sunset" neighborhood, are Ebisu (Japanese sushi and noodle) at 9th Avenue & Irving St; Park Chow (American fusion) at 9th Ave. between Irving & Lincoln, and Pacific Catch (Seafood) at 9th Ave. and Lincoln Way. For a quick bite, Arizmendi Bakery (sourdough & g/f options) is also near 9th Ave. & Irving. Parks close to the conference site include Jefferson Square Park and Lafayette Park (see maps in Addendum). SF Recreation & Parks website lists more open spaces. There are a myriad of museums in SF, including the ones in GGP mentioned above. The Legion of Honor Museum, home to Impressionist paintings & Rodin sculptures, is within the green space of the Presidio neighborhood, a long bus (#38L) ride from Geary & Van Ness out to 34th Ave. -
